elcome to the first College Voice of 2022. I am sure we are now all back into the normal routine following

Prior to the Christmas break, we held lots of great events and celebrated many achievements. Ryan and his Catering and Hospitality students hosted lunch at the City Restaurant for Captain Steve Higham and his crew of 40 from the HMS Prince of Wales. Vicky from the Floristry department ran a wreath-making event for staff, the Sport department arranged the first staff vs student sports day, and we hosted events to celebrate College of Sanctuary Month in December. Students and staff also led on charity fundraising events and donation giving, supporting our contribution to the Good for Me, Good for FE campaign which highlights how much colleges do to support good causes. January has started with more great achievements. Ryan Fernandez has been made a member of Master Chefs of Great Britain, a prestigious status which will enable Ryan to create more industry contacts among many other opportunities. Well done Ryan. We have a number of courses starting in January which are crucial to meeting our targets for student numbers and income. Curriculum teams are now planning for September 2022, ensuring we have enough lead-in time to put in place the necessary staff, resources and marketing. And we also need to make sure we hit our targets for this year as well as next, so if you have any ideas that can help with this, please do share them with your line manager.

Our focus this term is firmly on student retention and completion. We know that many young learners can experience doubts throughout their studies, and we recognise the need to offer the support they need to continue their studies. We will be keeping a close eye on students’ progress and helping individuals to stay on track, while continuing to provide our necessary additional learning support services. Like every organisation, we are still facing challenges presented by the ongoing pandemic, and will continue to follow government guidance and make changes as needed. For now, we ask all staff to support us in implementing the message communicated to students that face coverings are required at all times in College. Our primary focus is ensuring our students can continue to learn in College and the whole College community stays safe and well. We have plenty of lateral flow tests and ask that staff and students continue to test twice weekly and follow the government guidance if they show symptoms or test positive. We will continue with regular updates to keep everyone informed of changes. Thank you for your support and co-operation. Let’s hope for a happy and successful 2022. I look forward to meeting you all over the next few weeks.

Schools dinner On Thursday 18 November, we celebrated our essential relationship with local schools across Bristol by welcoming representatives to our City Restaurant at College Green. The representatives were seated with their former students, giving them the opportunity to hear about their transition to College and how their alumni were doing. Guests enjoyed a four-course meal prepared and served by our Catering and Hospitality students under the guidance of Chef Saravanan from Nadu in Stokes Croft.

Wellness workshops with Prince’s Trust students Prince’s Trust students at College Green were joined by Inclusive Wellness for their community project this term. The students explored what wellness means for young people like them in Bristol, and engaged in a series of workshops delivered by Inclusive Wellness from 25 October to 3 November.

Care students collect festive treats for food bank Level 1 Care students at SBSA have spent the past half term collecting Christmas goodies and day-today essentials for Withywood Foodbank. Their collection included Christmas food treats like cake, biscuits and crackers as well as hygiene products and pet food. The donations presented to Withywood in December were gratefully received and will support struggling families this festive season. 3

Inspired by what they had learned, the students then hosted a wellness event for students at College Green, with baked goods for sale, painting, colouring, bracelet making, origami and games to take part in.

Festive fairs raise money for charities Our Business, ESOL and SEN students have been busy hosting winter markets this term for students and staff to enjoy. The festive spirit was in the air at College Green, Ashley Down and SBSA when stalls were set up selling baked goods, ornaments, plants, jewellery and more all in the name of charity. The Business students partnered up with the Student Union, who put on a German food market at the same time in the food hall of College Green, to raise money for Breast Cancer UK. Raffles, tombola and a Santa were just some of the staples of the event, which raised more than £300. At SBSA, the Pathways to Employment students ran a winter market in the Winter Gardens, with festive games, sweet cones, gingerbread and plants and paintings for sale.

Money raised at the event went to charity and towards parts of the PtE programme. The final event, which took place in the final week of term, saw the 16-18 ESOL students host a raffle and winter craft sale, with proceeds going to the Bristol Refugee Rights and City of Sanctuary Transport Fund. Congratulations to all of our staff and students for raising money for so many worthy causes this festive season.


Open Day Feedback

W

e have received overwhelmingly positive feedback from prospective students, parents and guardians who attended our Open Event on 30 November. Of 58 people who responded, 55 said they would recommend the event to a friend and said they planned to apply or had already done so.

Some of the comments we received included: “The teachers I spoke with were knowledgeable and helpful, encouraging and helped to guide me a little. I was given new things to consider in terms of courses and what may be most suitable for what I am considering to study.” “What a fantastic open evening!! Right from walking into reception, everyone in the evening was really friendly and helpful, my daughter is interested in sport and Kirsty spoke with passion and knowledge. She walked away with a big smile on her face, thank you to all involved.”

“The teaching staff were very informative and clear with their explanations and in depth course information. I really enjoyed the tour of the department and seeing the animals that I would be working with. I asked lots of questions and was given realistic answers which put my mind at rest about applying, so much so I filled out my application for animal care as soon as I got home.” Thank you to everyone who was a part of the Open Event and helped the College earn this brilliant feedback - now to look forward to the next one on Saturday 22 January!

New Catch-up Mentors

F

ollowing the success of our Catch-Up Coordinator’s one-toones and workshops with our students whose learning was impacted by COVID, we have brought in three more Catch-Up Mentors to support more learners this academic year. Conducting workshops on Confidence and Motivation, Exam Techniques, Accountability, Personal Values and more, these new team members aim to empower learners to re-engage with their learning in a more independent, achievable and personalised way.

Support your students with Career Coach

O

ur Career Coach tool is a great resource for Local Market Information about the state of the jobs market in the Bristol area.

It provides information about skills gaps and employment needs within the city, and is therefore a vital resource in preparing our learners for successful employment in Bristol and ensuring the skills we teach stay in the local jobs market.

Career Coach is easy to access, and we should be continually referring to it with our curriculum in mind to ensure what we are teaching is up to date and in line with the current labour market. It is especially important at the moment, with the constantly changing economic circumstances, and by monitoring LMI we can help our learners to make informed decisions about their career choices and progression routes through education and beyond.


Events

T

his half term we have held lots of events. Besides the open events, we held our second Construction Question Time, College Sanctuary Month, HE Graduation, Press Evening and School Contacts Evening in the training restaurant and wreath making for staff.

School Liaison We sadly said goodbye to Lauren Ryan in December, who left us to pursue a job in PR. But, we are very pleased to welcome Peter Kyriacou to the team, who was previously one of our brilliant Industry Placement Officers and we are sure will bring his passion for helping students to the School Liaison role!

Wreath making Staff enjoyed the opportunity to learn a new skill in December and create their own festive door wreath in a workshop at SBSA. Floristry tutor Victoria Veasey took a group of 20 staff through the process of making their own show stopping festive piece and demonstrated the key techniques for a perfect wreath. She showed them how to wrap the frame with moss, cut and attach the greenery, make the perfect bow and create a hanging hook. SBSA’s Winter Garden was filled with the aroma of fresh greenery, orange and cinnamon so the staff could let their creativity flow, all while enjoying some festive chocolate treats and music. The event, organised by the Marketing team, was a great success with staff commenting that it was great to spend time with colleagues and to learn a new skill. One staff member said they found the event ‘very therapeutic’ while another said it was good to have a ‘small insight into some of the skills our students learn’. Everyone was very pleased with their creations and impressed with what they had achieved in just a handful of hours. The team is now looking ahead to the next staff activity, so keep an eye out for further information.

PR Night Our Marketing Team welcomed members of the press to the penultimate gourmet dinner of the term, with students serving up traditional Mauritian dishes with Chef Brinda Bungaroo. The event, which received high praise from the special guests, showcased the very best of what our students could do and what our courses have to offer. The press night acted as an opportunity to network and broaden relationships with the press who have been working closely with our PR and Communications Officer Ellie Young for the past two and a half years. Guests included representatives from Bristol Life, Business Insider and What’s On Bristol, with BBC Points West, ITV News West Country and Bristol Live all sending last-minute apologies due to illnesses. Ellie said: “I am so grateful to Ryan, Des and the students, as well as guest chef Brinda, for putting on a brilliant evening. Our VIPs from the press were blown away by their efforts and the event has since earned a lot of additional PR for the College, including a spread in the upcoming What’s On magazine coming out in January.”

HE Graduation

H

undreds of proud parents, partners, friends and families filled the pews of Bristol’s stunning cathedral on Saturday 20 November for not just one but two higher education graduation ceremonies!

A formal dyslexia diagnosis allowed Tanyka to understand the underlying reasons for her previous difficulties and she has worked incredibly hard to improve her academic skills. Her determination to improve prospects for herself and her young daughter has been fierce and impressive, and she now has a renewed passion for her chosen area and increasing self-belief.

We welcomed more than 300 higher education students from the past two academic years to dress in their caps and gowns for the illustrious ceremony marking the end of their studies at City of Bristol College. Graduation guests enjoyed keynote speeches from Peaches Golding OBE, The Lord-Lieutenant of the City and County of Bristol, and The Rt Hon Lord Mayor of Bristol Cllr Steve Smith, as well as speeches from dignitaries from our university partners.

Shaun Canning was named the winner of the Plymouth University Academic Partnership Prize. The FdA Graphic Design and Digital Arts student was celebrated for his achievements during his studies on the University of Plymouth course.

The event also celebrated two students who were awarded a special graduation prize. Tanyka Griffiths, who graduated from the Health and Social Care Management degree, was presented with the Martin Gibbs Memorial Prize. Tanyka has overcome many challenges throughout her educational journey, and after completing her Level 3 Health and Social Care with us, she gained the confidence to progress onto a Foundation Degree in Health and Social Care Practice. 9

Shaun has come an exceptional distance since enrolling and, after suffering a great personal hardship for a number of years, he has shown great resilience and fortitude. He made the most of the opportunities to pursue his passion, exhibiting a positivity towards learning and spreading his enthusiasm for the subject among his colleagues. Congratulations to all of our 2021 graduates, and to Tanyka and Shaun for their well-deserved award wins.

HMS Prince of Wales

W

e were honoured to welcome Captain Steve Higham and his crew from the HMS Prince of Wales to the City Restaurant on Sunday 12 December.

Officers and crew from the Royal Navy’s fifth generation aircraft carrier enjoyed a weekend of events to commemorate the ship’s affiliation with Bristol. The ship is one of the most powerful surface warships ever constructed in the UK and holds anywhere from 800 to 1,600 crew members at once. The weekend’s events culminated with a special Evensong service at Bristol Cathedral which included the witness of the ‘Blessing of the White Ensign’ which traditionally flies on Royal Navy ships.

Ahead of the event at the cathedral, Ryan Fernandes and his Catering and Hospitality students served up an impressive buffet lunch for Captain Higham, Commander Weapons Engineer Shaun Riordan and 40 members of the crew. Dishes included a mini cottage pie, pulled pork buns, Vietnamese prawn rolls and sweet treats including mini lemon tarts and chocolate mousse. The students received high praise from the Captain and his crew, which included some of the ship’s top chefs. The College is now working in partnership with the HMS Prince of Wales to arrange visits on board the ship in the new year.


Catering demos at SBSA

L

evel 1 Catering students at SBSA have been treated to chocolate and fish demonstrations by some local cooking legends.

Former student and Michelin star chef, Josh Eggleton, started off the series of demonstrations in November with a fish and shellfish demonstration, joined by former lecturer and St Monica’s Trust’s Adrian Kirikmaa.

In December, they were joined by Chef Ben from Bath Spa Hotel to learn the art of making chocolate. They were taught about white, milk and dark chocolate, shown tempering and chocolate art making, and given the opportunity to try making chocolate themselves. Looking ahead to the new term, the students will have the opportunity to enjoy demonstrations in pie and pasta making.

The pair showed students how to prepare and cook with flat and round fish such as mackerel and flounder as well as octopus, oysters and more.

City Restaurant earns five-star food rating e already knew our City Restaurant served up five-star food, but now it’s official as it has been awarded top marks in its latest food safety inspection.

Food safety surveys consider the hygienic handling of food, including preparation, cooking, re-heating, cooling and storage, as well as the cleanliness and condition of the building and facilities. One of the most important measures is the management of food safety, namely if the food served was safe to eat and how the restaurant managed allergens.

Lecturer and restaurant manager, Desmond Smith, said: “We are over the moon to maintain our fivestar rating at the College Green City Restaurant. Our staff and students work incredibly hard to ensure we maintain the best of standards in both the front of house and kitchens and this score reflects that.” “We are a restaurant at the heart of the community, working with chefs with links to businesses in Bristol on our gourmet nights, using locally-sourced products in our cooking and, obviously, training local people into the hospitality industry. We are looking forward to being able to continue serving delicious food and drinks to diners after a year-long hiatus.”


College of Sanctuary

D

ecember has been a busy month of celebrations as we held three events to mark College of Sanctuary month.

Schools & Colleges of Sanctuary is an initiative from Bristol City of Sanctuary, which aims to foster positive attitudes within schools, colleges and their communities around people seeking sanctuary, and support schools and colleges to take positive steps towards being places of safety and inclusion for all. First, we held a College of Sanctuary breakfast on 3 December at Ashley Down Centre, where we welcomed community leaders and representatives from charitable organisations to discuss initiatives happening across Bristol to foster an inclusive environment for all. Local councillor Ruth Pickersgill gave a talk about the importance of City and College of Sanctuary statuses, while City of Bristol College’s Cathy Bowstead and Carolyn Nye spoke about what we do to support these initiatives within the College.

Finally, it was over to our fantastic hospitality and catering tutors and students on 13 December for a special College of Sanctuary lunch at our City Restaurant. We welcomed 30 of our ESOL students, both past and present, and representatives from Off the Record, Bristol Refugee Festival and Borderlands. One of our lunch guests, Mustafa, said: “I just would like to thank you for the wonderful lunch celebration which took place yesterday. It meant a lot to me. I cannot explain how proud I am to be here within this great society and wonderful people. Thanks to everyone who attended and to the great students who cooked this delicious food.” You can find out more about our College of Sanctuary status here.

Next, we were honoured to welcome Mayor of Bristol Marvin Rees to College Green on 9 December to officially receive our College of Sanctuary award. Being an accredited College of Sanctuary means we are committed to being a safe and welcoming place for people whose lives were in danger in their own country. We are proud to help our students, staff and wider community to understand what it means to be seeking sanctuary, and to extend a welcome to everyone as equal, valued members of our college community.

Time at college: Six years Brief description of your role with the CoS: I am working as part of the College representing our young ESOL learners to ensure they are provided with a quality education and any additional support to enable them to thrive in the City. This is achieved through close working partnerships with external parties such as social workers, local authorities and charities. Interesting fact about yourself: I am a keen footballer and have played for a team almost every year since I was six years old, breaking from this very briefly during the latter years of secondary school to focus on my studies.

DAF apprenticeship students take home medals at national skills competition

T

wo DAF students secured podium positions at the recent WorldSkills UK National Finals, walking away with a bronze and silver medal, after succeeding in a seven-month process which included regional heats and intensive training before stepping up to put their skills against the best of the best in early November. The winners were announced at a special live programme from Channel 4’s Packed Lunch Studios, presented by Steph McGovern. Two City of Bristol College students were among the winners of the Heavy Vehicle Technology category. Daniel Parker, who is completing his apprenticeship at Adams Morey Ltd, was presented with the silver medal while Andrew Hill, who is working at Motus Commercials, was handed the bronze medal.

City of Bristol College works in partnership with DAF Trucks Ltd as the leading provider of our apprenticeship programme, training hundreds of apprentices from across the country in the heavy vehicle trade. The apprentices work in a bespoke DAF workshop at our Motor Vehicle Technology Centre near Bristol Parkway, complete with several trucks of differing shapes and sizes. Congratulations, Daniel and Andrew!


Marketing update

W

e want to let you know what we are doing to promote our amazing College, and to celebrate the key achievements and successes of our staff and students. It has been a busy half term with the return of events and a focus on student recruitment for January and September 2022.

Student voice

New and coming soon We have enjoyed College Voice for a long time, and following its success we have now introduced Student Voice and Community Voice, with Employer Voice to launch this month. These jam-packed newsletters help us to share all of our news with key audiences. Student Voice has been posted to 1,000 16-18 year old applicants, which is the right approach to ensure it is read by both applicants and hopefully their families. All of our print is carbon-neutral, and printed using sustainable paper and ink. We send monthly e-news to target groups, and we have recently sent one to more than 1,500 adults who have shown interest in a course, which we are confident will support January enrolments.

We are using up our stocks of non-environmentally friendly products and will only be using sustainablysourced goods from now on, which are more expensive but ultimately the right thing to do. You will hopefully have received your bamboo travel cup or cotton tote bag during our jubilee celebrations, which are just a taste of what is to come! We are also now on TikTok! This is a great platform for reaching our young audience and is going well. We will be developing this and our other social media platforms as we finalise our social media strategy for the year.

Community voice

Thank you for helping us get lots of new photographs of students. We now have a good library and are excited to use them in our new materials, social media channels and website.

Website facelift This year we are planning to give our website a facelift, something that we have wanted to do for a while and now have the capacity to do a great job of. At the moment, we feel as though we have a shop without a shop window! The homepage will see the most change, with supporting updates across the website.
