Entry Requirements & Levels of Learning

We want you to be placed on a course that is the right level for you. Your GCSE results will indicate which course level you will begin at.

Whatever level you start at, there are plenty of opportunities to learn and progress onto further study, an apprenticeship or employment. You can stay with us all the way through to degree level.

Achieved Your GCSEs?

If you achieve five GCSEs at Grade 4 – 9, you are likely to join a Level 3 programme. There are some exceptions, for example, if you have not studied the subject before and need to develop new specialist skills.

Next Steps If Not

If you do not gain five GCSEs at Grade 4 – 9, you will simply start on a lower level course initially before having the opportunity to progress on to Level 3.

Let’s Discuss Options

We will discuss your options with you at your course information meeting, or when you visit us for an Open Event. Remember, all school leavers are guaranteed a place at the right level for September 2025 entry.

A guaranteed place depends on grades achieved and current working level.

English & Maths for School Leavers

English & Maths change lives and are crucial qualifications that help you to progress in life; which is why every course for school leavers includes English & Maths development. These qualifications support you to progress and pass your chosen course, help progress you on to higher levels of study, an apprenticeship or university as well as future employment and opportunities.

Will I Study English & Maths?

If you’re aged 16 – 18 and don’t have a Grade 4 (C) at GCSE in either English or Maths, you’ll attend weekly classes to work towards this level.

How You’ll Develop Your English & Maths Skills

If you already have a GCSE Grade 2 or 3 in English & Maths, or a Level 1 Functional Skills qualification, you’ll be supported to achieve a higher grade of 4 or above.

If you’ve already achieved an Entry Level Functional Skills qualification, you will progress to the next Entry Level or to GCSE if you’ve already achieved an Entry Level 3.

If you don’t have any English or Maths qualifications, you will be individually assessed and placed at the best level for you to succeed. You can also book into Study Plus if you need extra support.

A Levels

A Levels offer the opportunity to study a range of subjects and gain sound academic knowledge and skills that are valued by universities and employers.

Most students study a full-time programme of three A Levels over the duration of two years, although it can be possible to study across four years. You will be taught at our College Green Centre by expert tutors and where applicable, have access to our specialist facilities to complete practical work.

How Will You Learn? Where Next?

A Levels are primarily assessed by external exams at the end of the two years, with mock exams held at the end of your first year. Some subjects may be partially assessed through coursework.

Entry Requirements

A Levels are Level 3 qualifications and to gain entry on to these courses, you will need six GCSEs grade 9-4 (A*-C) or equivalent, including 4 (C) or higher in English Language and Maths.

Some subjects will also have additional entry requirements.

Once you’ve completed your A Levels, you may choose to go to university or enrol onto a Higher Education course at our University Centre. You could also progress onto a higher level apprenticeship, or use the academic knowledge and skills you’ve gained to enter employment.

Additional Equipment

Some courses may require you to purchase additional equipment, but you will get this information from your tutor.

Find out how you can apply for a bursary to help with these costs

A Level Pathways

We have designed five pathways which will help you to choose subjects that complement each other and will help you to reach your career goals. However, these pathways are just a guide and you can take any combination of subjects as long as they fit in your timetable.

Industry Placements

Industry placements (also known as work experience) are a mandatory element of our study programmes. They’re designed to bridge the gap between education and employment, inform students’ career choices and teach the attitudes and behaviours expected at work.

You should expect to complete a minimum of 30 hours and a maximum of 345 hours with an employer in a role directly relevant to your course of study. You will also have opportunities to work on live projects provided by employers and attend specialist placements and career insight weeks.

How Do I Find Industry Placements?

The college will support each student in finding the right placement and our industry placement team will work with you to monitor your progress, visit the workplace to carry out regular progress reviews and support your completion.

You can organise your placements through your own contacts, but will need to liaise with your designated work placement officers for next steps and to log your placement.

How Will This Fit In Around My Course?

Industry placements take place outside your timetabled lessons and within usual industry working hours to give you a realistic experience.
