Let’s Get Started With Your Options

The following section lists all of the courses currently offered at City of Bristol College.

Entry Requirements and Levels of Learning

We want you to be placed on a course that is the right level for you and what you need. Your GCSE results will indicate which course level you will begin at. Whatever level you start at, there are plenty of opportunities to learn and progress onto further study, an apprenticeship or employment. You can stay with us all the way through to degree level.

If you achieve five GCSEs at Grade 4-9, you are likely to join a Level 3 programme. There are some exceptions, for example, if you have not studied the subject before and need to develop new specialist skills.

If you do not gain five GCSEs at Grade 4-9, you will simply start on a lower level course initially before having the opportunity to progress on to Level 3.

We will discuss your options with you at your course information meeting, or when you visit us for an Open Event. Remember, all school leavers are guaranteed a place at the right level for September 2024 entry. *

A Levels

A Levels offer the opportunity to study a range of subjects and gain sound academic knowledge and skills that are valued by universities and employers.

How Will You Learn? Entry Requirements

Most students study a full-time programme of three A Levels over the duration of two years, although it can be possible to study across four years. You will be taught at our College Green Centre by expert tutors, and where applicable, have access to our specialist facilities to complete practical work.

How Will You Be Assessed?

A Levels are primarily assessed by external exams at the end of the two years, with mock exams held at the end of your first year. Some subjects may be partially assessed through coursework.

A Levels are Level 3 qualifications and to gain entry on to these courses, you will need six GCSEs grade 9-4 (A*-C) or equivalent, including 4 (C) or higher in English Language and Maths. Some subjects will also have additional entry requirements.

Where Next?

Once you’ve completed your A Levels, you may choose to go to university or enrol onto a higher education course at our University Centre. You could also progress onto a higher level apprenticeship, or use the academic knowledge and skills you’ve gained to go into employment.

A Level Pathways

We have designed five pathways which will help you to choose subjects that complement each other and will help you to reach your career goals. However, these pathways are just a guide and you can take any combination of subjects as long as they fit in your timetable.

Technical and Vocational Courses

On a technical or vocational course, you will learn the professional knowledge and technical skills to progress into your chosen career or industry sector. Your qualification provides a strong foundation for further study, completing higher-level training or progressing into employment.

How Will You Learn? Entry Requirements

You will be taught a combination of theory and practice across the breadth of your subject by specialist tutors, mainly at college. Where relevant, you will have access to our specialist facilities to learn in a simulated work environment. You will study for one or two years, depending on the course subject and level.

All our technical and vocational courses include industry placements, work-based projects and working with employers and external organisations to give our students as much workplace experience as possible.

How Will You Be Assessed?

Technical and vocational courses are mostly assessed through coursework, but some courses may have examined units. Where undertaken, work-based projects and industry placements will include feedback from the employers.

Our technical and vocational courses are usually Level 2 or Level 3, and the entry requirements for a specific course will depend on its level and the qualification you will gain.

If you don’t yet have GCSE English and Maths, both at grade 4 or above, you will study the relevant GCSE or a Functional Skills course alongside your qualification.

Where Next?

Depending on the qualification level that you complete, you could progress onto further study either at college or, if you’ve completed a Level 3 qualification, at university. You could also progress onto an apprenticeship at the level above the qualification you’ve earned, or go straight into employment.

Foundation Programmes Pathways (SEND)

Foundation programmes are designed for young people who:

Don’t yet meet the entry requirements for a Level 2 qualification

Want to begin studying a different subject at foundation level

Would benefit from a greater focus on personal and social development skills

We offer a wide range of vocational pathways to choose from, including: Construction, Business, Travel & Tourism, Sport and Animal Care.

Our SEND study programmes are designed to give young people with special educational needs and learning difficulties the skills and experience to live a more independent life, progress into further study or move into employment.

We work with the young person to create a study timetable based on their interests, skills, support needs and aspirations.

SEND study programmes are available from Pre-Entry Level to Level 1 and include:

English Maths

We’re passionate about providing not just courses but careers, and pride ourselves on our excellent links with employers across the region to develop the workforce of the future. Maybe we’re biased, but we think Bristol is the best! It’s big enough to be immersive and small enough to feel like home, Bristol is home to some of the country’s best music venues, bars, restaurants and theatres, and well-connected to the rest of the UK too.

How To Apply

It’s easy to apply to City of Bristol College. There’s no deadline for applications, but courses do fill up so we recommend getting your application in as soon as possible.

Explore Your Options

Talk to your teachers and family about your options. Our School Liaison Officer regularly visits local schools to tell you more about the college, so you can ask them your questions, too.

You can also use our online Career Coach to see which careers and courses might suit you:

Make Your Application

You can apply for our courses online, or contact us if you would prefer a paper application form. If you can’t decide what to study just yet, you can apply for multiple courses, then make your final decision when it’s time to enrol.

For many courses you will be invited to attend a course meeting. This is an informal discussion about your choices to ensure the course you’ve chosen is right for you.

Get Advice

Our Student Services team are here to help you make an informed decision about what to study after your GCSEs.

Attend an Open Event

Open Events are your chance to come to college, meet staff and current students and see our facilities for yourself. You can get advice on courses and extra information like financial support.

Our Commitment to Sustainability

We know that we must all take action where we can to reduce the impact we have on our environment, and to respond to Bristol City Council’s declaration of a climate emergency. The college’s strategic aims include a pledge to emphasise sustainability in our curriculum and work towards carbon neutrality.

Part IV: Graphic rules for labelling

With that in mind, this prospectus has been produced using a Carbon Balanced Printing scheme. The scheme measures the environmental impact of producing the printed material, then offsets that impact in partnership with the World Land Trust, who use the donation to protect threatened habitats which would otherwise have been lost and avoid the release of stored carbon.

Guaranteed Places

Students aged 16-18 are guaranteed a place with us, subject to you meeting the entry requirements. Should your GCSE results not be what you hoped for, we will discuss your options and help you to still get where you want to be.
