RECREATION DIRECTOR
Greetings!
Thank you for connecting with our recreation guide, Play CR, Cedar Rapids Parks and Recreation’s go-to source for all things recreation! This season’s guide is filled with classic programs, beloved by past participants, and new activities that will allow you to explore new experiences.
The season of frosty air and early dusks is a time for reflection and new perspectives. We are challenged to find the beauty in nature’s stillness. While the landscapes of our parks slip into dormancy, our parks and facilities stay open and we continue to offer a warmth of experiences. Consider the rejuvenating power of recreation as fuel for your winter season and chart a course with us towards the brightness of spring.
Opportunities for connecting with nature are endless in Cedar Rapids –from small neighborhood parks to large signature parks. Take time to visit the new Hughes Park, if you haven’t yet. This nature-based park is a firstof-its-kind in our system. Step outside and discover something new. Walk along the Cedar River at Manhattan Park, meander the historic grounds of Ushers Ferry, or photograph bald eagles in flight at Prairie Park Fishery.
In addition to nearly 100 parks and facilities, a wide variety of activities are sure to spark your interest. Our passionate staff have planned an abundance of new individual and family programs. Sign your school-aged children up for one of our many Winter Break or Spring Break offerings. There’s fun for families at Movie Night at the Lodge and Santa’s Workshop. Sports teams, swimming lessons, and rental opportunities are offered throughout the season to meet the needs of all participants.
I am grateful for your support as a trusted provider for your recreation needs. Our staff is committed to ensuring you have an exceptional experience at every turn. Please don’t hesitate to let us know via parksdirector@cedar-rapids.org if there is something fantastic you have experienced, or if you need help finding the right recreational opportunity.

SWIMMING
Akey strategy of the ReLeaf Cedar Rapids plan is to plant a diversity of tree species to help make our urban forest more resilient and better able to withstand pest infestations and diseases. This is the lesson that communities across the nation have learned the hard way, first losing the stately American Elms that once lined city streets to Dutch Elm Disease, and more recently watching the ash trees that were planted to replace the elms be destroyed by the Emerald Ash Borer. You can find the list of recommended ReLeaf tree species by visiting Cedar-Rapids.org and typing “Master Tree List” in the search bar.
DID YOU KNOW?
Acorns from oaks in the Red Oak family (including red oaks, black oaks, shingle oaks, pin oaks, and northern pin oaks) wait until spring to germinate, but acorns in the white oak family (including white oak, bur oak, swamp white oak, and chinkapin oak) start to germinate soon after the acorns land on the ground in the fall.
SPECIES SPOTLIGHT: OAK
While a rich diversity of trees species is the goal as Cedar Rapids replants trees, oaks are at the top of the list. Why? Because oak trees provide so many of the benefits that ReLeaf is trying to achieve for our community. They provide amazing shade, they have grown in this area for thousands of years, they are key food sources for wildlife, and they are tough, able to tolerate drought and conditions that make other trees swoon. Oaks also live for hundreds of years and many species of oaks are champions at locking up carbon in their big trunks and root systems, which reduces the amount of carbon in the atmosphere.
Why the difference? Red oak acorns have higher amounts of tannin, a bitter chemical that make acorns less tasty to wildlife, which discourages squirrels and other wildlife from choosing them as a snack until much later in winter, when all other food sources are scarce. Because red oak acorns stick around longer, they can afford to wait until the warmer and wetter days of spring to start to grow.
White oak acorns do not have as much tannin, making them a preferred food for wildlife in the fall. Their strategy for survival is to almost immediately release a shoot that will eventually become the tree’s tap root. The tap root anchors the acorn to the ground and sends the acorn’s nutrients into the soil, more hidden from the hungry squirrels, birds and other wildlife.
