Pioneer spirit | “Pioneer Spirit” is a gift from the City of Coquitlam commemorating the 1909-2009 Centenaire de Maillardville/ Maillardville Centennial. The piece embodies the spirit of the pioneers who arrived in the area at the turn of the century, and provides a wayfinding presence in the heart of Maillardville. Coquitlam Columbian Centennial totem | Located at Dogwood Pavilion, the totem is one of a series of four poles commissioned in 1967 during Canada’s Centennial year by the Columbian chain of local newspapers. Bee sculpture | The bee and flower on which it rests is a living sculpture constructed of a steel frame with fabric stretched over and filled with special growing media. Each year the bee sculpture is replanted with mulit-coloured Alternanthera, a small drought tolerant annual. It is in bloom over the garden from June to early October, then hibernates for the winter.

COQUiTlAM’S HERiTAGE iS RiCH. Still home to Kwikwetlem First nations, Kwikwetlem means “red Fish up the river” in reference to the salmon that have historically travelled up the river for centuries. Kwikwetlem elders’ stories explain that they have always been here. archaeology confirms continuous occupation of the traditional territory for at least 9,000 years, since the last ice age. First nations people were the only human inhabitants in the lower Coquitlam river watershed and areas beyond until european settlers came to live here. the nation is made up of two reserves, a 2.6 hectare site at the mouth of the Coquitlam river where it drains into the Fraser river, and a much larger 82 hectare site approximately 2 km north.

the following year, one of the most significant events in Coquitlam’s history took place when a contingent of 110 French Canadians recruited for work at Fraser mills arrived. With the influx of a second contingent in June 1910, maillardville was established. maillardville, named for Father maillard, a young oblate from France, was more than just a French-Canadian enclave in Western Canada. it was a vibrant community, the largest Francophone centre west of manitoba, and the seed of Coquitlam’s future growth.

CPr station house and CaBoose Fraser Mills station MuseuM | At the turn of the century, many immigrants and Quebecois arrived at this station with bright hopes of forging a prosperous future on the west coast of Canada. The station is now a museum located in Heritage Square. This museum is part of the Canadian Historical Railroad Association. MaCkin house | This early 1900’s heritage home houses many artifacts and displays pertaining to Coquitlam’s early history. The house was built in 1909 as a residence for Mr. H. J. Mackin, the General Sales Manager of Fraser Mills - an impressive lumber mill. Hundreds of historical items, toys, photos and rooms decorated in 1900s may be viewed.

although Simon Fraser passed through the region in 1808, european settlement did not begin until the 1860s. Coquitlam began as a “place-in-between” and its early history is one of settlement and agriculture. in 1891 the district of Coquitlam was officially incorporated. the young municipality got its first boost in the latter years of the 19th century with the opening of Fraser mills, a state-of-the-art lumber mill on the north bank of the Fraser river. By 1908, a mill town of 20 houses, a store, post office, hospital, office block, barbershop and pool hall had been established around the mill.

Poutine

Enjoy this classic, French-Canadian dish. In the basic recipe, fries are covered with fresh cheese curds, and topped with a light brown gravy. Ingredients: 4 large potatoes, peeled 1 teaspoon salt 1 cup cheese curds 1 1/3 cups heated gravy Oil for frying

Directions • Cut the potatoes lengthwise into strips approximately 1/3” in width. • Soak the potatoes in ice-cold water for 1 hour, drain, and pat completely dry. • Heat the oil in a deep fryer or deep skillet to 3250F and fry the potatoes in batches for 3 minutes until they turn dark white-yellow (not brown). • Drain the fries on paper towels and allow to rest for a few minutes. • Bring the oil back to 3250F and fry potatoes again for 4 - 5 minutes, until they turn golden brown and the inside stays soft, while the outside is crunchy. • Drain fries on paper towels, salt them, and divide onto plates or bowls. • Add fresh cheese curds that are slightly smaller than bite-sized. • Usually a light and thin chicken, veal, or turkey gravy, mildly spiced with a hint of pepper is used. • The gravy should be thin enough texture to glide into the mass of fries and cheese curds so that the cheese is warmed without completely melting. • The gravy can also contain vinegar or another sour flavouring to balance the richness of the cheese.

Hike through dense mountain forests, fly-fish for salmon along quiet river bends and wade into trout -stocked lakes. Test your courage on the fearsome mountainbiking trails of Eagle Mountain or kayak through the Coquitlam River. Bird watchers, bring your binoculars to Colony Farm and Minnekhada Regional Park. Coquitlam residents love their spectacular natural environment and work hard to protect it, volunteering with many different conservation and environmental groups. We’re a city in balanced harmony with nature, and experts say we have perfect Feng Sui. The Coquitlam River flows down between two mountains to the city, making it a place of peace and prosperity. Coquitlam is a leader in environmental stewardship, supporting more than 70 parks from small neighborhood parks to large nature areas. Coquitlam’s 90 km trail system is one of our most requested event locations, featuring a portion of the Trans Canada Trail, with surfaces suited to all types of activities. Some are wheelchair accessible.
