Canada Day at Town Centre Park

TOWN CENTRE PARK

Town Centre Park was rated the best public space in Canada in 2017 by the Canadian Institute of Planners— and it’s easy to see why. At its heart is Town Centre Park Plaza, a stunning outdoor amphitheatre that plays host to concerts and festivals (see page 24). The park is also home to the Lights at Lafarge Winter Lights Display (see page 28).

MUNDY PARK Rated by residents and visitors as one of the top places to visit in Coquitlam, this urban forest is a popular spot for walkers, runners and our furry four-legged friends. Take a walk through the forested trails to discover the serene beauty of Mundy and Lost lakes (see page 23).

MINNEKHADA REGIONAL PARK

Interested in spectacular views, oldgrowth forest and incredible wildlife? This 200-hectare park is just minutes away from City Centre and yet perched on the edge of vast wilderness. Hike to the High Knoll for an impressive view (see page 22).

COLONY FARM REGIONAL PARK

Bird watchers flock to this 400-hectare-plus park to spot rare birdlife including great blue herons, purple martins and the elusive lazuli bunting. The park is crisscrossed by flat, wide trails, ideal for riding bikes, running or simply strolling through nature (see page 23).

COQUITLAM CRUNCH

Add this one to your bucket list! The Crunch is a challenging hike from the base of Eagle Mountain to the summit on Eagle Ridge Drive. You start by climbing more than 400 stairs followed by an uphill hike that gains 250 metres in 2.2 kilometres (see page 8).

HOY CREEK LINEAR PARK & HATCHERY

This peaceful, forested trail is pleasantly shaded in summer, offering a quiet reprieve from City Centre. In fall, paths around Hoy Creek Fish Hatchery offer prime viewing spots to see spawning salmon (see page 12).

Take a walk around the one-kilometre lakeside trail and watch people of all ages casting their lines into the water. This pretty lake, which is the headwater of the Como Creek Watershed, is regularly stocked with rainbow trout and is the site of an annual fishing derby (see page 13).

10 TH ANNUAL COQUITLAM CRUNCH DIVERSITY CHALLENGE This much-loved annual event, scheduled for Sept. 7 this year, offers different categories for varying fitness levels. The recreational group is geared toward all ages and involves completing the route at least once. Other options include the ‘Stair Master,’ which involves racing up the stairs, or the ‘Make It or Break It’ challenge to see how many times you can complete the Crunch trail within four hours (current record is eight times). coquitlamcrunch.com

INSIDER TIP Alex Bell is founder of the Coquitlam Crunch Diversity Challenge. WHY THE CRUNCH? “For one, it’s accessible to nearly all levels of fitness. For an extremely intense workout, you can run or walk just the stairs as many times as possible. If you want an endurance workout, you can walk or run the entire length as many times as you want. Or, if you have fitness or mobility challenges, you can skip the stairs altogether and walk the more gentle slope to the top.” LOCATION, LOCATION: “(The Crunch) is right in the city limits. There is no long drive out of the city. For people farther away you can even get there by SkyTrain and a short bus ride. This makes it an all-weather trail as even in winter it can be accessed every day.” GO WILD: “I like the wildlife and plant life along the trail that changes with the seasons. I have seen bears, owls, coyotes, rabbits, snakes, deer, raccoons, eagles, hawks, hummingbirds and numerous other birdlife.”

Westwood Plateau Golf Academy

DISC GOLF The high-flying sport of disc golf has a growing following around the world. Not only is it fun and inexpensive, but it’s an activity the entire family can play—from young kids to grandparents. The game—sometimes referred to as Frisbee golf—is played much like traditional golf, although instead of a ball and clubs, you throw a disc. The object is to reach each basket (or hole) in the fewest number of throws. Coquitlam’s 400-acre Mundy Park hosts a free nine-hole disc golf course, located near Spani Pool, at 655 Hillcrest St. Nets are on site as permanent targets. NATURAL WONDERS The name Coquitlam comes from the Coast Salish word “kʷikʷəƛ̓ əm,” which means “red fish up the river,” acknowledging the importance of salmon to our culture

THE SALMON RUN is one of Mother Nature’s greatest spectacles. Whether you’re a young child, a visitor seeing spawning salmon for the first time or a seasoned wildlife spotter, this scene never fails to impress. Each fall, thousands of fish return to Coquitlam waterways to spawn. After spending much of their adult lives at sea, they begin their epic journey to return to the creek where they were born. Some will swim thousands of kilometres, battling many obstacles in order to return home for the last time. If you want a close-up view of spawning salmon, duck into the trail around Hoy Creek Hatchery (closest street is Princess Cres.). You’ll find footbridges and areas where the path cuts close to Hoy Creek, offering prime lookout spots. Other good locations to view this natural phenomenon include the trails along the Coquitlam River and along Scott Creek off Guildford Way. Watch for chum from early October to early November and coho from late October to late December. Watch for spawning salmon during fall

GO FISH LAKE FISHING Whether you’re age three or 83, fishing is an activity that can be enjoyed by all. And here in Coquitlam, you don’t have to travel far to reel in your catch of the day. Two of Coquitlam’s urban lakes—Como and Lafarge—are regularly stocked with rainbow trout. It’s as easy as walking down a trail, rod and bait box in hand, and casting your line. You can fish year-round, but the best months for local trout fishing are April, May, June, September and October. To see when the lakes were last stocked, visit gofishbc.com. Interested in giving your kids fond memories, plus a lesson in patience? Drop in to either of the two local fishing derbies (see details at right) or sign them up for summer lessons through the City of Coquitlam. coquitlam.ca/programguide If you need fishing gear, or expert advice, be sure to pay a visit to Sea-Run Fly & Tackle (1140 Austin Ave.).

RIVER FISHING Take a walk along the Coquitlam River and you’ll likely see anglers waist-high in waders. Salmon fishing is allowed in this river, although take note that certain restrictions are involved (some species are catch and release only). Another place to hook a salmon is Maquabeak Park (5 Burbridge St.), situated on the bank of the Fraser River, with shore access and a boat launch. Five species of salmon run through this spot at varying times of the year, including chum, chinook and coho. Sturgeon fishing (catch and release only) is also available on the Fraser.

This free event in May is for kids under age 16, with prize giveaways for a variety of catches. It’s a fun day out at Como Lake, attracting hundreds of children each year. festivalcoquitlam.ca

LAFARGE LAKE FREE FISHING DAY Enjoy fishy fun and prizes on June 16 during B.C.’s free fishing weekend, when licences aren’t required. The lake will be stocked in the morning with rainbow trout, so there are plenty of opportunities to reel in a fish. festivalcoquitlam.ca

SALMON COME HOME Celebrate the return of the salmon at this free family event on Oct. 20 at Hoy Creek Hatchery. Entertainment includes live salmon demonstrations, music, interactive children’s activities, food and educational exhibits. hoyscottcreek.org

FISHING LICENCES Don’t forget! A B.C. Freshwater Sport Fishing Licence is required for recreational lake fishing for those age 16 and over (fishing.gov.bc.ca), and a Tidal Waters Sport Fishing Licence is required for all ages to fish in the rivers (dfo-mpo.gc.ca). Be sure to check the websites for updated fishing regulations and fees.

SPOT THE SALMON SCULPTURES In recognition of the salmon’s significance in Coquitlam, a series of 12 sculptures designed by Squamish Nation artist Jody Broomfield was installed throughout the city in 2016 and 2017. Each piece stands more than six feet high and has been decorated by a different local artist. Grab a coffee and sit back on a park bench for a blissful moment while your child burns off some energy. Parent warning: These parks have so much to offer, it may be difficult convincing the kids to leave. ROCHESTER PARK This newly renovated park, at 1390 Rochester Dr., is a favourite with local families and revered by mom bloggers. Cue beaming smiles as your child sets sight on this park’s spectacular nature-themed playground structure, with plenty of space to climb. Other features include a zip line, climbing wall, tube slide, saucer swings accessible for all users and a skate spot. In summer, tots will love the sand and water play area in the park’s lower level. You’ll also find a washroom facility on site, a picnic shelter and grassy areas for picnicking.

Children go wide-eyed when they see the colourful playground, which has a variety of equipment suitable for all ages and abilities. The park also has a large spray park, sand volleyball courts, free outdoor table tennis and foosball tables.

Queenston Park • Amalie, 5 “I like the big slide ’cause it’s really fast. I like the lineup for the slide because I’m kind of nervous.”

QUEENSTON PARK Climb, slide, repeat. This park, at 3415 Queenston Ave., has an impressive playground structure built into the side of a hill, so children burn their energy by climbing the wooden bridge or spider web to the top. Once there, they enjoy the long, thrilling slide that zips them back down—ready to repeat the process again. Smaller play structures for younger children are also on site, as well as a fenced-in area for soccer and basketball. Park benches are conveniently located next to the play area. Make note, this neighbourhood park does not have on-site washrooms so plan your visit accordingly.

MACKIN PARK

BLUE MOUNTAIN PARK

Calling all scooters, skaters and bikers! If your kids go wild for riding around on wheels, you’ll want to take them here. Mackin Park, at 1046 Brunette Ave., has one of the best skate parks in the city, featuring a quarter pipe, rails and ledges.

This forested park, at 975 King Albert Ave., is home to a wonderful playground. Not only does it have a roller slide, oodle (or saucer) swing and music chimes, it’s also home to a popular spray park and splash pool that are sure to delight in summer. Other highlights include a paved bike path through the urban forest setting with plenty of tall fir and cedar trees offering much-needed shade on hot days. Kids love the impressive stone sculptures and cave with mini waterfall.

The park also has a playground area, washroom facilities, four ball diamonds, two lit tennis courts, a perimeter walking trail and wide-open playing fields for kicking a ball around. In summer, round up the kids and head to its excellent spray park to cool down on hot days.

You’ll see the sand spraying and balls spiking at Town Centre Park’s beach courts located near the skate park. While these six courts often play host to Volleyball BC and other community tournaments, drop-in courts are often available for the public. Or pack your ball and paddles for a game of table tennis with a view. Simply drop in to use the sturdy free outdoor tables or opt for a game of foosball. You’ll find them outside Percy Perry Stadium.

The skate park at Town Centre Park played host to the Western Canada International Scooter Association qualifier in 2017. It’s a large park, so even when it’s busy there’s plenty of room to get air. LOCATED ON THE EDGE OF NATURE, it’s no surprise that Coquitlam is prime for mountain biking. Burke Mountain and Eagle Mountain are on our doorstep, offering a variety of trails and the West Coast style of riding that is attracting enthusiasts from across the Lower Mainland. The city’s central location, plus its extensive bike route network —with access to park trails and amenities—also make Coquitlam ideal for road biking. Here are some tips on how to get started.

JOIN A BIKE GROUP Interested in mountain biking? If the idea of heading out into the wilderness on your own sounds intimidating, the Tri-Cities Off

Road Cycling Association (torca.ca) offers group mountain bike rides twice monthly. Riding is free if you sign up as a member for $20/year. “Coquitlam has a lot to offer riders of varying abilities,” says Ken Porter of Torca. “It has everything from road and flat trails to more technical tracks. It suits everyone from beginner to advanced riders—that’s what’s great about Coquitlam.” If road biking is more your speed, local groups include the TriCities Cycling Club, which is “cheerfully accepting” new members. TEST YOUR SKILLS Get off-road and test your abilities on some bike skills trails. You’ll find beginner and intermediate-level circuits at Mundy Park, at the corner of Mariner Way and Chilko Boulevard, including obstacles such as a timber teeter-totter, log stacks and bridges. After honing your skills, set off and explore the park trails. One circuit located at Leigh Park (1254 Soball St.) is great for younger riders, with bridges and obstacles to test their skills. coquitlam.ca/parkfinder

GETTING AROUND If you plan on getting around by bike, you’ll want to pick up your free copy of the Tri-Cities Cycling Map—available at City facilities including City Hall and the public libraries, or online at coquitlam.ca/cycling.

IF YOU’RE LOOKING for a challenging experience with steep terrain in a dense forest setting, try the Ridge Park Trails on Westwood Plateau (see page 44). The network of approximately 23 kilometres of trails can be accessed from a number of locations, including Parkway Blvd. and Hampton Park. While many have manageable slopes, take care on gravel surfaces and steeper sections. For maps and trails, visit coquitlam.ca/trails MINNEKHADA REGIONAL PARK Hiking trails range from a flat path through an expansive wetland into old-growth forest to an uphill climb to the High Knoll lookout (allow yourself at least 2 ½ hours round-trip). metrovancouver.org. The Woodland Walk Trail (pictured) is a favourite, leading to the stunning Sawblade Falls (approximately eight kilometres round-trip). The stunning landscape of Lafarge Lake is transformed into a magical wonderland each festive season, attracting thousands to join in the celebration Whether you’re organizing a family outing, date night or a get-together with friends, here are five things to know about Coquitlam’s much-loved lights display.

BE DAZZLED Lights at Lafarge launches late November each year at Lafarge Lake in Town Centre Park, with new surprise features every year comprised of hundreds of thousands of sparkling lights illuminating the landscape. It’s a free event that attracts visitors from across the Lower Mainland, running until mid-January.

GET SOME FRESH AIR Wrap up warm and walk around the 1.2-kilometre lakeside trail to view the multiple themed zones, from a 27-metre-long caterpillar to the popular archway Arbour Walk and an outdoor dining table with overhanging chandelier on the pier. Watch for surprises in the trees, in the water and around every corner.

LOCATION, LOCATION The light display is located just steps from Lafarge Lake-Douglas SkyTrain station, providing easy transit access. Free parking is also available in Town Centre Park off Trevor Wingrove Way (no parking is permitted at the adjacent Evergreen Cutlural Centre parking lot—violators will be ticketed.). Hungry? Within a 10-minute walking distance from the lake, through more beautiful lights at City Hall and Spirit Square, you’ll find numerous cafés (off Pinetree) as well as the foodie hub of Glen Drive, with plenty of options to grab a bite to eat, relax or enjoy a cocktail.

LIGHTS AT LAFARGE SEASON KICKOFF Kick off the festive season with free, family fun at Lights at Lafarge, Saturday, Nov. 30. Grab the family to explore the dazzling light display that circles the 1.2 km Lafarge Lake loop in Town Centre Park, 1299 Pinetree Way. The evening will be packed with live entertainment, food trucks, buskers, roving entertainers, family crafts and more. Watch for updates at coquitlam.ca/lights

Other popular Coquitlam film locations include Town Centre Park and Lafarge Lake, City Centre, many of Coquitlam’s forested areas and Upper Coquitlam River Park. The city is also home to SIM North Bend Studio. The Shack, starring Octavia Spencer, Tim McGraw and Sam Worthington (released March 2017), was filmed at Widgeon Marsh and Hillcrest Middle School. GETTING HERE & AROUND BY PUBLIC TRANSIT Coquitlam has four SkyTrain stations and is easily accessible from downtown Vancouver and other Metro Vancouver communities. SkyTrain’s Evergreen Extension connects with the Canada Line for direct access to Vancouver International Airport (YVR) in Richmond. Coquitlam is also served by the West Coast Express Commuter Rail and has an extensive local bus network. Plan your trips at translink.ca. Bicycles are allowed on SkyTrain except during weekday peak periods and are allowed on buses at all hours, as well as permitted on West Coast Express at all hours. Bike lockers are available for monthly rentals at most SkyTrain and West Coast Express stations, where you will also find bike racks. translink.ca/bikeparking BY BIKE Coquitlam offers cyclists many options to get around and to commute to adjacent cities, east toward the Fraser Valley and west into Vancouver. Both off-street and on-street routes are available with the on-street options including major street shared lanes, major street bicycle lanes as well as neighbourhood bikeways and lanes. Due to the city’s topography, there are a number of steep hills so cyclists should familiarize themselves with their route before embarking. BY VEHICLE Coquitlam is just a 35-minute drive from Vancouver, with convenient access via the Trans-Canada Highway or Highway 7 (Lougheed). The Port Mann Bridge connects Coquitlam to Surrey in just minutes.
