Welcome to Coquitlam! We’re excited to share our community with you. In Coquitlam, we live on nature’s doorstep, giving us the opportunity and responsibility to protect, nurture and support conservation efforts. We are a community where volunteerism and civic pride run strong, resulting in a city buzzing with positive energy, a city that people, businesses and organizations see as an ideal place to live, learn, work and play. We are proud to focus our Coquitlam in Bloom efforts this year on youth, youth initiatives and keeping our city clean for future generations. Welcome from Catherine Kennedy Executive Director of BC Communities in Bloom

Celebrate, learn, laugh, share & be proud! Come to a full conference program that is geared towards current, former and future Communities in Bloom participants to be held in the City of Coquitlam this year. The BC Communities in Bloom program is a not-for-profit society made up of dedicated volunteers who are specialists in horticulture, parks and recreation and community engagement. We welcome communities from around the province to participate in the BC Communities in Bloom Conference and Awards, and to find out more about how to enhance their hometown’s unique potential and celebrate their successes.


SCHEDULE OF EVENTS

All education sessions and awards and banquet will take place at Westwood Plateau Golf & Country Club unless noted otherwise below. Bus shuttle transportation to and from the Executive Inn will be provided for all events. Please refer to the last page of the program for further information about accommodation booking with the Executive Inn, and to register for the conference, and awards and banquet.

Opening Remarks Keynote Speaker Brenda Robinson, Founder & President of Robcan Group Brenda is a speaker, trainer, writer and consultant. With a Bachelor of Arts and Masters in Education, she has been addressing groups for over 30 years. Be prepared to be enthralled by her humour and passion for working with people.

Bright Ideas Table Top Sessions Featured speakers will present on new and innovative initiatives while facilitating discussions in small groups. Participants will have the chance to attend each group session.

Lunch Buffet Time to network and visit the interactive displays.

Site Tours Visit some of Coquitlam’s premier locations: » Mundy Park is a 178 hectare park and trail system offering visitors an exceptional recreation experience in a rare urban forest. You’ll experience forest bathing, a sensory path, a Zen garden, arborists tree climbing and this year’s newest feature, the Pop-up Youth Park. » Centennial Rose Garden, a formal rose display garden, one of the last of its kind in Western Canada. » Town Centre Park, named “Best Public Space” by the Canadian Institute of Planners in 2017, is a city-wide destination park providing exceptional sport, recreation and cultural amenities and experiences. This park includes the Inspiration Garden, a teaching garden dedicated to inspiring, developing and supporting gardeners in the community, as well as the eco-sculpture, modelling after Bill Reid’s Killer Whale sculpture “Chief of the Undersea World”. » Coquitlam Crunch, a popular fitness challenge for many local residents. Hikers and fitness walkers enjoy the natural setting and spectacular views of Coquitlam on this 2.2 km uphill climb.

Sharing Hot Topics Tell us the “buzz” on selected topics happening in the “In Bloom” community. Participants will have the chance to share at each hot topic table.

Refreshment Break Youth Panel Youth involved in this year’s Coquitlam Youth in Bloom will share their experiences on a number of youth initiatives such as the Pop-up Youth Park, Fun Nights at the Stadium and the diverse range of Youth Committees that made it happen. Learn about how to connect and engage youth to participate in the community.

Free Afternoon A shuttle will transport you back to the Executive Inn if required. Starting at 5:30 p.m., a shuttle will transport you to the Westwood Plateau Golf & Country Club for the awards and evening banquet.
