Why do some animals have fur while others have feathers or scales? Your child will learn about characteristics of mammals, fish, birds, and other animals through activities and hands-on encounters with real animals! This class is held in a nature preserve where active outdoor exploration will be part of every class when weather permits. We'll get out and explore!

Introductory Blacksmithing for Teens 14-17Y
Learn the basics of safely working with hot metal as you create small items such as a coat hook, gate latch, or gate hinge. Class size is limited to two students so that each will have plenty of hands-on practice and individualized instruction. Information on appropriate clothing for working at the forge, as well as details about recommended eye protection and hearing protection will be sent to students prior to the first class meeting.

Our park rangers are your local experts, with plenty of stories and fascinating facts about steelhead trout, mountain lions, native raptors, the riparian ecosystem, local history, and more.
Night Hike and Flashlight Tour 5Y+
Come out and enjoy a fun-filled Night Hike and Flashlight Tour of McClellan Ranch Preserve and Blackberry Farm! We will explore the woods and nature at night, learn about nocturnal animal’s special adaptations, and test our heightened senses in the dark with games and activities. The hike is approximately one mile on a combination of dirt trails and paved paths. Please wear sturdy walking shoes, a warm jacket and bring a flashlight or head-lamp.

Backyard Birds for Beginners 5Y+
Learn your backyard birds on this beginners’ bird walk with the Park Rangers and the Santa Clara Valley Audubon Society! With the help of Park Rangers and volunteers, you’ll observe the birds that come to the feeders and learn how to use Merlin, a free bird identification app that is helpful for new birders. We’ll then take a short stroll down the paved Stevens Creek Trail, looking and listening to birds as we identify them. Afterward we’ll email you a list of the bird species observed and a guide to birding resources. Binoculars provided and toilet paper roll “binoculars” for children.

Join a Park Ranger for a tour of the native trees and plants in our local riparian habitat. We’ll explore the relationships ancient peoples had with these plants and how they used them for food, medicine, and survival.

The Park Rangers invite you to learn about the incredible winter wonders that can be found in the Stevens Creek Corridor! Discover the things which can only be seen during the cool, wet months of the year such as the wide variety of creatures that live under logs and rocks. Take a closer look at the native riparian zone and learn about the unique animals that are living in and around it. Please wear sturdy walking shoes and a warm jacket. Walk will be a mile long on uneven surfaces.
