1) OTHER THAN SURFING (OF COURSE) WHAT’S A MACHADO FALL FAVORITE ACTIVITY OR HOBBY? (CAN BE YOU OR ANY OF THE KIDS ANSWERING) Going to the beach. Table tennis. Movie nights in our yard. Bike rides. 2) SO YOU GREW UP RIGHT NEAR GLEN PARK IN CARDIFF, THIS TIME OF YEAR, WHAT ARE SOME OF THE MACHADOS’ FAVORITE THINGS TO DO AT THE PARK? Tennis at glen park is the best. It’s not very often that you have a tennis court a stones throw from the beach. It’s got a pretty rad playground and park too all my kids have grown up playing there. 3) FOR THE MACHADOS, WHAT’S THE COOLEST THING ABOUT LIVING IN ENCINITAS? Surfing, the beaches, the food, the people...It has it all. We are truly blessed to live here and be apart of a great culture. 4) SUNRISES OR SUNSETS? Sunsets... 5) WHAT’S ONE THING ON YOUR “ENCINITAS BUCKET LIST?” I’ve never gone carpet snowboarding in that “learn to ski/snowboard thing” behind Hansens. And To have all my kids’ hands imprinted in concrete next to mine in the sidewalk on Birmingham.

T AKING R ESOURCES E SSENTIAL TO E NCINITAS S ERIOUSLY

The City of Encinitas takes trees seriously, it’s in our name. Did you know Encinitas translates to “Little Oaks” and that the City maintains more than 13,000 trees? Named “Tree City USA” from the Arbor Day Foundation for four years running, Encinitas trees are serious business, and we take our business seriously!

Why trees are important. Trees: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Produce Oxygen Cleanse the Soil Control Noise Pollution Slow Storm Water Runoff Act as Carbon Sinks

6. 7. 8. 9. 10.

Clean the Air Shade and Cool the Earth Provide Windbreaks Fight Soil Erosion Increase Property Values

healthy plants (or trees in this case) Plant health care (PHC) is the management of plant appearance, structure, and vitality. The appearance of landscape trees is a legitimate objective because landscapes are planted and valued as much for their aesthetic qualities as their functional utility. Structural integrity is extremely important when it comes to trees, not only for their preservation but also for safety and the preservation of life and property. Proper PHC is necessary to ensure the health and vitality of trees.

Here are a few tips to help ensure the health of your precious resource: Nutrients- Maintaining the correct nutrient levels is essential for many plants and trees. Palms, for example, require specific nutrients to remain green, healthy, and vibrant Pruning- Pruning trees is important to help build and maintain the integrity of the tree structure and to stimulate growth. Pruning needs are determined by species and not all trees are pruned the same Pest & Disease Control- It’s important to address the first signs of pests and disease to prevent irreversible damage or total loss. Consult with a with a Certified Arborist for best results Water- It is important to remember that even though we are in a drought and we are cutting back on watering ornamental grass, don’t forget that trees need water to thrive and fend off disease (not too much!) Drought- Drought stressed trees can become more susceptible to pest and disease. Some trees, especially those prone to borer and beetle infestations, are experiencing high mortality rates in the current state of drought If you are not sure how to address any of the tips above, please contact a Certified Arborist or your local Nursery. The City of Encinitas Urban Forestry program is here to serve. If you have a question, comment, or concern regarding city trees, please contact us at (760) 633-2600. Staff are available to direct your call to the proper Department to ensure your request is handled expeditiously and with care!
