Patrons of Encinitas Parks (PEP) is a non-profit 501-C3 non-profit organization that was founded in 1984 by active residents of Encinitas who were passionate about working with City staff to develop, improve and preserve our community’s active and passive parklands. PEP and the City of Encinitas executed a Memorandum of Understanding by which PEP is recognized as an official fund raising arm for the City of Encinitas. Public/ Private partnerships such as this not only serve as an example for future generations but are absolutely essential given today’s economic reality. PEP offers Encinitas community members an opportunity to continue the tradition of supporting parks and recreational activities that play a major role in the quality of life we all enjoy. Learn how you can get involved by visiting their website at www.patronsofencinitasparks.org.

NEW ENCINITAS

PARK SET TO OPEN! On July 11, 2012 the City Council voted unanimously to fund and award construction contracts to complete Encinitas Community Park and the Moonlight State Beach Improvement Project. A groundbreaking ceremony is anticipated in late August and construction will begin early September. The Moonlight State Beach Improvement Project anticipates completion by May 2013 and Encinitas Community Park by the end of 2013.

Encinitas Community Park

Encinitas Community Park is 44 acres located on the west side of I-5 between Santa Fe Drive and Birmingham Drive. The park is surrounded by a landscape buffer and includes a meandering dry creek with boulders, dense landscaping, decomposed granite pathway, and alcoves with benches. The park also includes: • Paved walking paths and bench areas located throughout the park. • Five paved parking lots (418 spaces) distributed across the park to allow parking for every element. • Two restroom buildings located in the northwestern and southeast areas of the park. • A skate park totaling 13,000 square feet located in the northern area of the park. The design includes a skate bowl as well as an urban plaza area with specially designed planters, ramps, and platform areas. • A dog park totaling over 2 acres located in the western area of the park. The design includes a large turf area, dense perimeter landscaping, a show circle, and an area for shy dogs and small dogs. • One soccer field and three multiuse fields that include two baseball and one softball field. There are also plenty of open turf areas to allow for unrestricted play.

Moonlight State Beach Improvement Project

Moonlight Beach is located west of I-5 off of B Street. The project consists of: • Removing the existing restroom and concession buildings resulting in an increase of beach sand area. • Adding a combined restroom/concession building totaling approximately 3,600 square feet located at the bottom of the parking lot. • A garage/pubic overlook building totaling approximately 950 square feet located at the bottom of the C street cul-de-sac. The garage will be used for parking lifeguard trucks, storage containers and rescue equipment. The top of the garage will serve as a public overlook area.
