KEEPING IT

S R U O Y O T M A E T R U FROM O

The City of Encinitas turf management team takes pride in providing safe and playable surfaces for your recreational enjoyment. In order to provide quality athletic turf that users deserve, fields require a little R&R from time to time. While rest and relaxation alone will not remedy the wear and tear our heavily used fields endure, field closures and comprehensive turf renovation practices address issues caused by heavy use and are crucial to the health and vigor of our turf. Typical field closures will last 4-6 weeks depending on needs. So please, “pardon our dust” while we give the fields the rest they need. We’ll be back soon with new green for your team!

Our annual field renovation process includes, but is not limited to the following: • Verticut (removes “thatch” also known as matted, dead, and/or decaying plant material) • Core aerification (reduces compaction, improves infiltration, and provides much needed oxygen to the soil and root zone) • Power rake and disposal (clean up unwanted debris provides optimum media for the necessary seed-to-soil contact) • Soil amendment (improves soil profile improving nutrient uptake) • Irrigation inspection & repair (distribution uniformity is key!) • Over-seed (improved turf type varieties selected for sports use and local climate) • Sod installations if/when needed • Top dress (protects the seed, keeps it warm to promote germination, and retains soil moisture) • Fertilize (yup, plants need food too) • Irrigate (short and frequent cycles to keep seed bed moist) • Germination (let it grow!) • First mow (just a little off the top) • Rest (Zzzzzz…) • Second mow to desired height • Game on! These practices apply to our dog parks just the same. Heavy recreational use, human foot traffic, and dogs have feet that perform just like cleats!

Maintenance schedule Field Closures Cardiff Sports Park Field 1 and 2 - June Field 3 and 4 - July Ecke Sports Park Field 1- 5/27 – 6/16 Field 2 - July Field 3 - 5/27 – 6/16 Encinitas Community Park Field 1 and 4 - May Field 2 and 3 - August Practice Site - December - February Leo Mullen Sports Park Baseball Field - August / Soccer Field - 3/22 – 6/22 & 12/22 -1/2/2016 *dates are subject to change

Dog park maintenance The Maggie Houlihan Memorial Dog Park will be closed every Thursday from 1 to 3 p.m. for cleaning, turf maintenance and odor control treatments. The Dog Park will be will be closed April 27 through May 21 and if needed, Sept 8 through Sept 20 for turf renovations and grounds maintenance.

at Encinitas Community Park • Skateboarders need to wear a helmet with the strap buckled under his or her chin and protective gear. Wrist guards are recommended but not required. • Children ages 10 & under should be under the guidance of an experienced skateboarder at all times. • No bikes or scooters allowed in the skate park. Sorry, but bikes and scooters just aren’t compatible with skate boards and create an unsafe situation. • Treat the skate park as you would a busy highway: Look both ways before moving through the park to make sure that it is safe. • Benches and ledges are not for sitting or for placing your bags on. Any item on the ledge is in danger of being treated as an additional skate obstacle. • Keep your drinks outside of the skate park. Spilled drinks inside of the park are dangerous and messy. Keep it clean! • Be aware of where you are standing or skating at all times. Look around to make sure that you are not in the path of someone else’s trick. • If you are new to skateboarding, consider practicing the basics before coming to the skate park. • Be aware of the other skaters and make sure you are taking turns. Courtesy goes a long way. • Respect the park: If you see any trash, throw it away. • Please do not smoke or drink alcoholic beverages at the park. • Set a good example for younger skaters and refrain from using foul language in the park.

The Parks and Recreation Department is excited to present Neal Mims Skate Academy Camps and Programs this summer. See page 18 for more information.

Any way you look at it, Encinitas is home-town to spectacular mountain views to the east and sweeping ocean views to the west, and with our rich sun & surf beach culture, it’s no wonder that the National Geographic named Encinitas as one of the “World’s 20 Best Surf Towns.” In this summer feature, we wanted to share all that is at your finger tips from the beaches, to the parks and trails and at your local Community Center. Did you know: •

There are over 120 camps and classes from acting to gaming and sports held at the Center this summer? ... the Center has a lot going on!

It’s a designated COOL Zone in Encinitas, which definitely makes it a cool place to hang out especially in the summer heat.

The Gallery showcases local artists surely to delight all that come to visit.

Well appointed rooms from the 5,000 square foot banquet hall, with full-service kitchen, to activity and conference rooms, all waiting for your next booking. Need a space for your next business meeting, special occasion or community special event? Give us a call!
