NOVEMBER 2004

Don’t Miss Household Hazardous Materials Day - November 13! The City of Goodyear’s Sanitation Division has added a second day per year when you can recycle or dispose of unwanted household hazardous waste materials that may be sitting in a cabinet in the house or out in the garage. Look for words like poison, danger, warning and caution on the label. Bring those unwanted corrosive, toxic, flammable and poisonous materials to the Goodyear City Hall parking lot at 190 North Litchfield Road, from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. This free service is available only to Goodyear residents so you will need to bring proof of residency (i.e. a utility bill, drivers license, voter registration) that shows your address. Try to keep all products in their original containers and do NOT remove the labels. All lids and caps should be tightly sealed. If an item cannot be sealed tightly, place it in a sealed plastic bag. Place all of your items in a cardboard box for safe transport.

False Alarm Class On Dec. 7 May Save You Future Fines In 2003, the Goodyear Police Department responded to 1,143 alarm calls and 99.7% were false alarms! It took 838 hours to respond to all of those false alarms. This represents almost 84 days of police manpower that could have been better used patrolling our streets instead. By training alarm users in what they can do to reduce false alarms, the Police Department hopes to reduce this problem. They also hope to educate the public about the need for an annual alarm permit. See City’s website: goodyearaz.gov. The first class will be held Dec. 7 at 6 pm in City Hall, Room 117. Call Chi Benedict, 623-882-7672 for reservation.

Citizen Participation Has Been Great!

Mayor Jim Cavanaugh welcomes people to park grand opening.

I think its time to give a big pat on the back to all of you who have taken time out of your busy lives to take part in Goodyear projects or activities. The most recent event was G.A.I.N. (Getting Arizona Involved in Neighborhoods) Day on October 9th when seven Goodyear neighborhoods each held parties to get to know their neighbors and help build a safer community where people watch out for one another. The neighborhood leaders who organized these events put in a lot of time and effort and deserve a great deal of credit. I was honored to present Certificates of Appreciation to all of the organizers at a recent Council meeting. The City Council, City staff and corporate sponsors -- PacifiCare Health Systems, Inc., APS and Crossings Church -- visited each party. We all

found these fun and informal events a wonderful experience. We witnessed neighbors getting to know neighbors and it gave us a chance to meet many of our residents. We laughed together, ate together, blew up balloons together, checked out Police motorcycles together and discussed many things about our city.

We were also amazed and happy to see more than 200 Goodyear stakeholders turn out for our 3-day downtown planning Charrette on Oct. 1-3. It was really heartwarming to see so many people give up a weekend to participate in helping design a downtown for our community.

Participants told us it is important for Goodyear to have a “heart” -- a place for people to gather and visit; one that is a true representation of the Mayor and Arnold Manor children check out The hundreds of spirit and the Police motorcycles at G.A.I.N. event. parents and children quality that who turned out for the recent grand makes Goodyear the unique community opening of our first community park is that it is. another example of how you, our citizens, are showing your enthusiam To all of you who have shown such for our City. Your heavy use of the enthusiatic support of your community, park and its ballfields plus your thank you! We really appreciate your attendance at the Concerts in the Park participation and interest. shows how much you appreciate having new amenities come on line. I encourage many of you to become an organizer of a G.A.I.N. event in your neighborhood next year or for you to attend an event if one is held in your area.

Mayor, West Valley Leaders Deliver “Save Luke” Message to Pentagon grams Director Jerene Watson were among a contingent of mayors and other West Valley leaders from Luke’s bordering cities who recently traveled to Washington, D.C. They met for six hours of meetings on Oct. 7th with high level Pentagon officials who will be influential in the decision making process during the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC). The trip accomplished its mission of sending a strong message to Pentagon officials of the dedicated and united community support that exists for Luke Air Force Base now and in the future. The key points the contingent

made at the Pentagon were that West Valley cities joined together to take the lead in protecting Luke’s mission and that new land management measures have resulted in encroachment being significantly lessened as a threat to Luke. “Everyone we spoke with at the Pentagon is genuinely pleased with the efforts our region has taken in protecting Luke’s ability to carry out its mission,” stated Mayor Cavanaugh. “We are held in high regard because our actions to protect Luke have not been replicated elsewhere. We repeatedly heard the word ‘model’ to describe the precedent-setting actions our region has initiated,” continued Cavanaugh.

Drips Aren’t Cool When It’s Cold Outside! Now that the weather has finally cooled down, it is time to reset drip irrigation systems. The average temperature in November is 62º, which means plants need considerably less water than during the hot summer months. New trees need to be watered once a week. However, established trees will need to be watered only once every two weeks. Regular plants will continue to grow and

thrive being watered only once a week. Reset drip systems to water for 1-½ hours to 2-½ hours. Additionally, be sure drip emitters are placed directly at the base of plants so each plant can make the most of the applied water. Water early in the morning when there is less evaporation and wind so more water is actually used by plants and less water is wasted.
