“A Tale of Two Cities” Centennial Parade and Festival

From the Mayor As we begin 2012, I find myself considering New Year’s resolutions. Around this time of year I tend to feel conflicted: guilt for tasks unfinished, excitement for the future, and gratitude for everything that’s good.

Saturday, February 25, 2012

Come early. The parade begins at 10 a.m. at Litchfield Road. Bring your folding chairs, blankets, and food and drink and settle in anywhere along the parade route for a fun and colorful morning of floats, marching bands, horses, clowns, dance troupes, and vintage cars. Show us your pride in Arizona by wearing your Arizona garb – hats, shirts, sweatshirts. After the parade, walk or drive to the festival at the corner of Dysart and Thomas roads on the Estrella Mountain Community College campus. Festival admission is free and includes music and entertainment, unique gourmet food trucks, a kids’ zone, bouncies, pictures with the famous “Charlie Chopper” from the Vietnam War, vendor booths, transportation-related displays, and fun contests – a 50/50 cash raffle, Pick-a-Train Contest, and quilt raffle. Parking access from Indian School Rd.

Special Raffles/Contests at Festival Will Raise Money for Train Depot

Help Goodyear’s Arizona Centennial Committee raise money to restore our historic train depot so it can become the centerpiece of a future train park in Goodyear. PICK-A-TRAIN NUMBER CONTEST – Win free train rides on Grand Canyon RR, Verde Canyon RR, or at the Scottsdale and Encanto train parks. Mobile Elementary School children have made trains out of milk cartons. Each train has a number and a goody bag to go with it. Your goody bag could include free McDonald’s meals, other treats, OR a free train ride for the family! Take a chance! Everybody wins! $5. QUILT RAFFLE – Win a beautiful quilt (can fit a queen or king bed) appraised at more than $775 (not counting the number of hours in labor) made by the Estrella Mountain Quilters of PebbleCreek to help raise money for the train depot. The winning ticket will be drawn at 2:30 p.m. on the festival main stage. $5 per ticket or $25 for 6 tickets. 50/50 RAFFLE – $1 per ticket or $5 for 6 tickets for a chance to win big cash prize. The more that enter, the bigger the prize!

Ancient Romans dealt with year-end blues by having a party honoring Janus, a mythical king with two faces. One looked to the past, the other to the future. With both hindsight and foresight, Janus was the symbol of resolution and hope. The Romans closed out the old year by paying debts, asking forgiveness, and resolving problems. They gave one another branches of prized olive trees… a tradition that evolved into making peace by “extending the olive branch” and winning favor by exchanging gifts. Eventually, the image of Janus became the “heads” side of a common Roman coin and part of their everyday economy.

Fill-A-Need and PebbleCreek Lady 9-ers Share Holiday Cheer in Mobile

I had the pleasure of being part of a special Christmas celebration at Mobile Elementary School in December. Goodyear’s Fill-A-Need volunteers teamed up with the PebbleCreek Lady 9-ers to help bring a little extra holiday cheer to the local school children. As the youngsters came in, their eyes grew wide with excitement. The Lady 9-ers, as they have in years past, provided gifts – toys, bikes, games, and clothes. Fill-A-Need volunteers brought Christmas trees, special treats, food, and brightly wrapped presents as well. Nothing could be more heartwarming than to see the smiles of happy children when Santa Claus arrived and began presenting gifts to all the children.

Happy New Year!

For many in our community, 2011 was a rough year with an even rougher economy. Coming together on this happy occasion in Mobile was a privilege for me. Sharing, reaching out, and helping one another during the holidays helps us stay grounded and in touch with the true spirit of the season. Being a community means more than living in the same city… it means working together and looking out for one another. Here in Goodyear, we come together to share good company, enjoy good times, and appreciate our neighbors and our friends. Now, let’s carry the good will with us as we move into the New Year.

Georgia Lord

Wally Campbell

Hints of these old traditions survive today. Looking towards the future, I believe the economy will continue to rally and prosperous businesses will continue to put down roots in Goodyear. There’s nothing I’d like better than to be like the mythical king who could see, at once, both the future and the past. However, I’m content to begin 2012 with a sensible dose of foresight, and the benefit of 20/20 hindsight. My New Year’s resolution is to learn from the past, to plan for the future, and to embrace the present.

Goodyear 2012 Citizen Survey

City Manager John F. Fischbach

We have just completed the 2012 Citizen Satisfaction Survey which we do every other year to help the City Council set future policies. The excellent ratings citizens gave Goodyear’s quality of life and their high satisfaction level with our services is good news and very gratifying after years of cutbacks. During these hard economic times, we have tried earnestly to choose service cuts that would affect our citizens the least and it appears we have succeeded. The tables below illustrate the positive attitude of our citizenry toward the City. I’d like to thank all 400 of you who took 20 minutes out of your busy day/ evening to answer the survey. You have performed a great service to all the residents of Goodyear who are represented by your responses. You also gave us guidance as to what services and facilities you want in Goodyear that we don’t currently provide which will help us prioritize projects when the revenues return. with More Shoppers, Prizes and Winners The Shop Goodyear for the Holidays program had more local businesses, restaurants, merchants, and residents participating than ever before. More than $7,200 in prizes were given away to 145 weekly drawing winners, 11 Grand Prize winners and one lucky winner of the Pandora’s Bracelet Ultimate Grand Prize from Osborne Jewelers. Shop Goodyear for the Holidays sponsors donated all of the prizes. There was tremendous support at “Shop and Drop” locations at Fry’s at 16380 W. Yuma Rd. and 390 N. Litchfield Rd. and the Safeway stores at 14175 W. Indian School Rd. and 9890 S. Estrella Parkway, and at Goodyear City Hall, where contestants dropped off entry forms and attached receipts from Goodyear merchants totaling $25 or more. By shopping local, local tax dollars stay right here in Goodyear and help pay for police, fire, streets, parks and recreation and other important services.

Goodyear Hosts

Shop -With-A- Cop

Goodyear police officers and volunteers chaperoned about 30 youngsters for the annual Shop-With-ACop holiday shopping spree, hosted this year by Walmart on Estrella Parkway. The kids started their day with breakfast at the Justice Center, courtesy of Chick-Fil-A Restaurant, where they met members of the Police Department. Santa was, of course, the center of attention, and gave each child a gift card to use during their shopping excursion. They were driven by motorcade to Walmart and enjoyed VIP treatment in a special room with cookies, milk, and orange juice. Each child was escorted into the store and accompanied by a member of the Police Department as they selected gifts for themselves, as well as family members. Shop-With-A-Cop 2011 was made possible through a generous donation raised during the 15th Annual PebbleCreek Home Tour in November. The two-day tour cost $10 per ticket, featured eight homes, and generated the funds which were donated to Goodyear’s Shop-With-A-Cop program. The Police also received a $1,000 grant from Walmart for the program.

Police Chief Jerry Geier

New Police Chief Joins City After a nationwide search and a comprehensive recruitment process, Jerry Geier has accepted the position as Goodyear’s new Chief of Police. Geier is scheduled to officially join the City on January 9, provided all details are finalized. Geier brings to the job more than 28 years of experience in law enforcement, most recently as Police Chief in Yuma, Arizona. He holds a Master’s degree in Criminal Justice Administration, a Bachelor’s degree in Criminology, and is a graduate of the FBI National Academy. Since March, Bill Cusson has served as Interim Chief of Police, leading the department through challenging times. Committed to restoring integrity to and confidence in the department, Interim Chief Cusson demonstrated extraordinary leadership skills, addressed serious challenges, and brought important changes to policy, protocol, procedures, and discipline. It is with appreciation and sincere thanks that the City of Goodyear acknowledges the contributions of Interim Chief Cusson, who remains a key member of the City’s executive team. 5

Free Rain Gauges Help You Save

Pick up a FREE rain gauge and use it to save water and cash. Skip one watering every time your yard receives more than 1/2 inch of rain. Except for winter lawns, watering most yards is not necessary during the average winter. That means big savings on your sewer bills all year long, because bills are based on your average winter monthly usage. By skipping using 1,000 gallons of water per month on winter watering, you can save more than $60 per year, based on current sewer and water rates. Pick up a FREE rain gauge at City Hall, 190 N. Litchfield Rd. or at Public Works, 4980 S. 157th Ave.

The Goodyear Ballpark sculpture, “The Ziz,” was recently named one of the four best art projects at sports venues across the country by the national publication, “Public Art Review.” Dozens of artworks were nominated by public art professionals, artists, editors, and others. Cited as art that “celebrates sports and the athletic spirit,” the elongated baseball sculpture by Donald Lipski measures 60.5 feet, the distance from the pitcher’s mound to home plate. The artwork also was recognized in 2009 by Americans for the Arts as one of the 30 best public artworks in the nation, from among more than 300 submissions.

Dick’s Sporting Goods is coming to town, bringing jobs and infrastructure to PV303, an outstanding business park just north of the future Loop 303 and Interstate 10 interchange. Goodyear was selected by Dick’s Sporting Goods after a two-year search that included Nevada, California and other locations. City officials, development representatives, construction and architectural teams attended the groundbreaking ceremony on December 6. Former NFL quarterback Danny White was on hand as well, and presented $2,500 checks from Dick’s to Excel Youth Sports, a local non-profit organization, and to a high school athletic program for the prevention of concussions.

Challenger Little League (4 - 18 yrs)

The Challenger Division of Little League is a program for mentally and physically disabled youth to enjoy the full benefits of Little League in an athletic environment structured to their abilities. However, whenever possible and with reasonable accommodations, disabled youngsters should participate in unrestricted league play provided their participation is possible and fair within the standard rules and regulations of Little League. More than the skills of baseball learned through the experience, the value of the Little League Challenger Division is found in the proven therapeutic and socialization benefits of participating in sports, the strengthening of self-esteem, the opportunities to mainstream into other divisions of play, and the disciplines of teamwork, citizenship, and fair play, which are hallmarks of the Little League program.
