CONNECTING
The city of Goodyear is always so full of life this time of year, it’s hard to remain inside! My husband and I moved to Goodyear almost 20 years ago, and we anticipated some growth, but we never expected the number of amenities and activities offered today.

Goodyear Community Park alone offers a cooling splash pad, two volleyball courts, four tennis courts, two basketball courts, a skate park, and — my personal favorite — the Mayor Pickleball court! Also at the park, Georgia Lord the Goodyear Community Farmers Market (which features local producers of organic and seasonal fruits, veggies, and specialty food items like bread, jams and pasta) is always popular and is held every Saturday morning — as long as the sun shines!

The laughter from children in the parks and the whizzing of the bicyclists on the various trails is motivating enough to become more active and enjoy the experiences outside. I encourage you and your family to take time out of your busy schedules to explore the events and activities described in this issue. There are many more creative and exciting opportunities for fun in the city of Goodyear and hope you visit our website at goodyearaz.gov to see what else the city has to offer!
WEDNESDAY
Council Corner My family and I always try to remain active, but this time of year, we make the extra effort to get outside before summer is upon us. We enjoy visiting the 17 parks throughout the city to play, practice various athletics, and cool down in the splash pad. The city is also working on developing Council Member a new park near Estrella Parkway and Brannon Hampton Harrison Street, which will offer more opportunities for all of you to get outside, too. This year, two of my children are joining the Goodyear Little League, which kicks off its opening day this month. I look forward to attending the games and seeing them play ball on such wellmaintained fields the city offers. Occasionally, we will participate in the many events and activities at the Estrella Mountain Regional Park. The regional park offers over 33 miles of trails where I educate my boys and girl on the beautiful surrounding desert. Getting outside makes living a healthier lifestyle easier and having the ability to access such a wide array of activities within the city limits makes Goodyear a great place to raise a family.

Traffic Safety Tip This month: Motorcycle Safety
F
or those who ride motorcycles, safety must be the top priority. Unlike a collision involving a car, truck, or SUV where there are metal, airbags, seat belts, and other safety devices as protection, in a motorcycle collision there is little protection – only rider skill and a helmet. Every motorcyclist should wear a helmet, use turn signals, wear bright reflective clothing, and be predictable to motorists. It is wise not to make sudden turning movements or accelerate quickly. Drivers of other vehicles need time to process what a motorcyclist is doing. Finally, and possibly most important, only experienced motorcyclists should ride with a passenger. In addition, it is vital that the passenger fully understand what is expected and how to lean properly during a turn or at a curve in the road. Goodyear Police want the roads to be safe for all motorists, motorcyclists and car drivers alike. Traffic-related questions can be sent to Goodyear PD Traffic Unit Sgt. J. Seabright at jseabright@goodyearaz.gov or call at 623-882-7735. What traffic safety topic would you like to see in future traffic safety tip articles? Please email suggestions to jseabright@goodyearaz.gov.
#GTK Good To Know Increase of Apartment Complexes
G
oodyear is one of the fastest growing cities in the United States. Two of the questions staff hear often are: When are we getting more dining and retail options? And why are so many apartment complexes being built? These two inquiries are very much related. The city’s Economic Development Department points out the maxim, “Retail follows rooftops.” This team works with retail decision-makers on a daily basis making the case for Goodyear, particularly for things residents most desire, such as restaurants, shops and entertainment venues. Each retailer has varied criteria for picking new locations.
4
goodyearaz.gov/InFocus
In general, Goodyear is becoming more desirable as a good retail and dining location based on population and the income levels in the area. However, the basic density and daytime population must increase to be more desirable to many retailers and restaurants. To get there, the city needs rooftops, workers and employers. Increasing the number of homes and workers will help Goodyear continue the development of its robust and diversified economy. Housing increases now and in the future will be an important part of the success of that effort. A multifaceted housing market not only helps build the number of rooftops but also leads to a sustainable housing market where there is mix of appealing high quality choices. FLIP FLOPS IN FEBRUARY We’ve all done it – brag to our friends and family back East about how we’re wearing flip flips in February and can sleep with the windows open. Marvelous weather and the booming Arizona economy are some of the reasons most relocate to the West Valley. Once you realize that you don’t have to shovel snow, wear sandwich bags over your socks in your boots to keep your feet dry, or live in fear of freezing pipes or car locks – well, life just gets better. Arizona’s weather allows us to add a robust dimension of outdoor recreation and living that isn’t as vibrant when you live in the snow belt. Research has shown that spending time outdoors has health benefits such as boosting memory, fighting back mental fatigue, relieving stress, boosting creativity and of course, improving mood. There are so many exciting things happening in Goodyear this spring to help you and your family get outdoors to claim some of those healthy benefits. This whole issue of InFocus is dedicated to many of the ways you can enjoy the great outdoors, no matter your interests, age, or fitness level.
ROAD CANDY AND ROCK Last month, we highlighted how Goodyear Ballpark is a valuable community asset, hosting family-friendly events year round. In March, the ballpark hosts fans from all over the Valley and the country for the 2018 Major League Baseball spring training season. Capping off this year’s action packed season, Goodyear Ballpark will host its first outdoor car show and concert. If you love horsepower, music and relaxing outdoors, this event is for you. This festival, expected to draw a crowd of several thousands, brings together people with a love for classic and modern muscle cars, tasty street food, frosty cold drinks, and culminates with a classic rock concert. The purple hues of the Estrella Mountains, the vibrant green grass, and the wide-open blue skies provide the perfect backdrop to stroll through a sprawling collection of horsepower. Everywhere you look will be gleaming show cars and trucks on display – guaranteed to drop your jaw. You’ll be able to meet the drivers and learn all about their cars. Our event partners, MuscleKingz, will be crowning the ‘Best in Show’ and ‘Most Ridiculous’ with awards, so keep an eye out for those special decals on the windshields. Once you’ve taken in all of the incredible vehicles, head on over to the vendors and pick up something unique to trick your own ride. Fuzzy dice never go out of style! Up on the massive music stage, you’ll love the nostalgic feeling you get when you hear the crowd cheer and see the light show kick off the concert. The car show and concert makes for a great date night, guys’ hangout or family fun day. Hold hands, put the little ones up on your shoulders, rock those cowboy boots and enjoy the outdoor car show and concert at Goodyear Ballpark. (See the back cover for event details.) 6

RED RUBBER BALL If you can remember the times when you had to carry a Walkman, camera, pager and a few quarters instead of a smartphone – then you just might be the perfect age to remember just how much fun it was to grab a bunch of neighborhood kids and play a game of kickball. Keeping score wasn’t the most important thing – it was having fun. You can recreate those fun times by joining the city of Goodyear’s recreational adult kickball league. Don’t procrastinate — send that group text to organize your roster because registration is happening right now and goes through March 16. In addition to having a healthy way to spend time with your office pals or friends outdoors, you will be able to come up a super cool nickname for the team. We don’t care if you call your collection of kickball cohorts “Saved by the Ball,” “2 Legit to Kick,” or “One Kick Wonders”, as long as you get outside, enjoy the camaraderie and live by our main rule for this league – have a great time! The recreational league takes teams and free agents so don’t be worried, you won’t be the last one picked.
ART TOUR If your idea of fun lands more on the contemplative, quiet side of the outdoor spectrum, we have plenty for you to do as well. We are so fortunate to have Estrella Mountain Regional Park, part of the Maricopa County Parks system, in Goodyear. The park features many trails that are popular with walkers, hikers and mountain bikers. Recently, the city of Goodyear Arts & Culture Commission installed a series of plaques in the park that describe the history and features of the area, making for a really interesting combination of art, nature and learning. One of the pieces explains: “These 19,840 acres became the first regional park in the Maricopa County Park system in 1954.” Spring is a perfect time of year to get out and discover this truly exceptional regional park right here in our own backyard. You can also get outdoors and travel around to the city’s 23 pieces of public art sprinkled in public spaces throughout Goodyear by following our recently released public art tour driving map available at goodyearaz.gov/arts. The guide pinpoints the locations of each art piece on a map so you can discover the treasures in the city’s diverse art collection. We’ve also created a series of trading cards for each art piece so you can take your understanding of the art even deeper.
The city of Goodyear provides numerous free, family friendly events to residents all year long! Connect with us on Facebook @goodyearazgov to see what’s happening around the city. Goodyear golfers are happy golfers
W
ander out to a golf course on any given day, and you’ll be among friends. This is the case at Palm Valley Golf Club, where a sense of community is felt by all including the staff and patrons alike.
Rick Novak usually plays Fridays in a foursome, but he’s practicing today because he has to catch a flight to Northern California that will cut into his regular game. While he acknowledges that wherever four or more men are gathered competition can arise, he resists it. “I really try not to get too caught up with results. This is recreation…social interaction…relaxation. It really is the journey, not the destination.” Next to him on the driving range, Ron Williams is hitting a bucket of balls. Which seems odd, because Williams works here: most of us want to be anywhere but where we work on a day off. To Williams, a busman’s holiday is one of the perks of the job.
“After I was let go during the recession, my omniscient wife said, ‘You like golf; go see if Palm Valley needs anyone.’ The day I walked in, a ranger retired.” So now Williams is the ranger, who gets people started in an orderly fashion (think of the guy helping you onto the ride at Disneyland), then strolls the course making sure everyone is both safe and happy. Today Williams is hitting like the pro he wishes he’d become. “I wasn’t good enough, since I started in college. But sometimes I get a perfect shot. I think, ‘I’m ready!’” He says a perfect shot would be defined in different ways by different people: “There are ten things to do right, and the more of them you do, the better the shot.” Williams’ easy smile and openness show why he’s a good Palm Valley ambassador. Today he’s off, so another ranger got Craig and Lyn Trojahn started at the first tee. The Albuquerque couple is staying at the Wigwam Resort to celebrate Craig’s birthday, and say they have golfed weekly for decades. “Especially when we travel. Like this – the weather is beautiful, the courses are all green and pretty; we see so many great places,” says Lyn. She started playing when she was pregnant with her daughter, and now that daughter and her new husband are joining them for a game.

This is exactly what Matthew Phillips, the head golf professional at Palm Valley, wants to see. To him, the golf course is about family and friends; a good walk not spoiled, but enhanced. Although he grew up playing football, basketball and baseball in Wyoming, he loves how inclusive golf is. Golfers don’t have the lean and hungry look of swimmers; they aren’t all tall, or all broad-shouldered. They are Everyone. Phillips says classes and instruction can help novices get past any fear or hesitation to play the game. Palm Valley offerings include Chix With Stix, for women to learn one new skill at each lesson; also Couples Therapy, giving spouses tips on what to do (and what not to say) when they play together, as well as a way to meet other couples. Because it’s about having fun, say two more employees who are finishing their game at the scenic eighteenth hole. Craig and Connor Swanson, father and son, also work at Palm Valley and are here on their day off.
“We get to be outside, take advantage of this great weather,” says Craig. “It’s fun even if you’re not very good, being with family and friends. I like learning what golfer came from where and how they did it. And I like knowing that, on any given day, we can come out, and do what they did. The tradition goes on and on and on.”
Connor played on the high school team, but says he does it for fun now. His father is the one who reads all about the golf history, watches films of famous golfers, and learns as much as he can. But it’s clear the real point is not the final score: it’s being with his son.
Rick Novak (left) practices his swing at Palm Valley Golf Club; Craig and Lyn Trojahn (above), from Albuquerque, N.M., enjoy a round of golf in celebration of Craig’s birthday.

March is Brain Injury Awareness Month 12
goodyearaz.gov/InFocus
Its mission: to cycle and have fun.
To help raise awareness about concussions, the city of Goodyear and its partners created a training program for coaches, parents and young athletes taking part in recreational sports leagues. A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury – or TBI – caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head or by a hit to the body that causes the head and brain to move rapidly back and forth.
You can’t see a concussion. Signs and symptoms can show up right after an injury or may not appear or be noticed until hours or days after the injury. It is important to watch for changes in how a child or teen is acting or feeling, if symptoms are getting worse, or if s/he just “doesn’t feel right.” For more information on concussion awareness, signs and symptoms, and safety tips and prevention, or to order educational materials free of charge, visit cdc.gov/headsup
Estrella Mountain Regional Park: A jewel in our backyard
The natural beauty of the Estrella Mountains is one of the first things visitors notice when they come to Goodyear. We are fortunate that Estrella Mountain Regional Park is within our boundaries – it was the first regional park in the Maricopa County Park System built in 1954, and the majority of the park remains pristine desert to this day. Many amenities are available, including the only county park with a grass picnic area. Today, Maricopa County continues the reinvestment in Estrella Mountain Regional Park. In the current 2018 fiscal year, 11 park shade and picnic ramadas will be remodeled and linked by a one-mile concrete walkway to the picnic areas, the second barrier-free access in the park. In addition, the budget includes improvements to the turf, water and electrical systems allowing open play and installed landscaping.
