EMPLOYEE APPRECIATION LUNCHEON2024
The City of High Point hosted its annual Employee Appreciation Luncheon on Tuesday, Dec. 10. This year’s theme was a nod to the newly designed City branding. The event took place at the Roy B. Culler, Jr. Senior Center, with a catered lunch provided by City Barbecue, as well as gifts and giveaways.
Special thanks to the Employee Appreciation committee for their hard work and willingness to make this luncheon such a memorable occasion!
Angela Kirkwood, MPA, SHRM-SCP, IPMA-SCP, City of High Point’s Director of Human Resources, was honored last week at the Risk Management Services Board of Trustees meeting for her service to the board! The RMS Board of Trustees oversee the three member-owned and member-governed insurance pools administered by the League.
Thank you for all that you do, Angela!

HP POLICE DEPARTMENT
HOSTS ANNUAL HOLIDAY COMMUNITY EVENT
It was another year of smiles and surprises for the High Point Police Department's Angels in Blue. This year, the program supported 30 local families (including 79 children) and more than 40 seniors living in an assisted living facility. Many teams from the police department shopped for gifts, wrapped them up and then presented them to the families.
Many people and groups helped make this a successful year, including the 31 community partners who made many Christmas wishes come true.
LEADERSHIPACADEMY
The Public Services department is excited to have Stormwater Specialist II Gabriella Zanzarella as a participant in the Emerging Leaders Academy.
A year-long national program, the Emerging Leaders Academy provides intensive leadership and management training within the context of public works. It encourages professional growth through a strong network of peers and offers an in-depth introduction to APWA at the national, chapter and branch levels.
Candidates must be professionals who have been working in the field of public works for no more than ten years or have been working for longer than ten years but have been promoted into their first leadership role within the past three years.
Gabriella joined the Stormwater Division on Jan. 31, 2022.
Teresa Baker, Recycling Programs Coordinator, Jamie Coleman, and Joey Bowman from Environmental Services participated in the World of Work education and information event at the Greensboro Coliseum.
They spoke with Guilford County School middle school students about possible career opportunities within the city’s Environmental Services Division. The students got an up-close look at equipment, asked questions, and learned about local government.
Please join High Point Parks & Recreation in congratulating our Special Olympics Guilford/High Point athletes, who participated in the 2024 Special Olympics North Carolina Fall Tournament in Charlotte, competing in bocce, golf, softball team, soccer team and soccer skills.
Our athletes and unified partners earned 10 gold medals, nine silver medals, six bronze medals and two fourth place ribbons. As always, we are tremendously proud of their athleticism, teamwork and sportsmanship!
If you want to support our Special Olympics athletes as they raise funding for future competitions, please consider participating in the Polar Plunge in February! It's a fun way to help them with the associated costs like uniforms and travel.
City employees are encouraged to participate as individuals or to organize teams. For those not interested in jumping into a freezing pool in February, other options exist to help raise money while staying warm and dry.

The High Point Museum hosted its 52nd annual Holiday Open House on Sunday, Dec. 1 showcasing High Point’s history while helping the local community get in the holiday spirit.
The open house presented a fun-filled day featuring holiday-themed musical performances from local groups, historical demonstrations and interpreters, arts and crafts, refreshments including hot apple cider and cookies, candle dipping and a visit from Santa Claus.
Entertainment for the afternoon include the High Point University Brass and String Quartets, strolling High Point Community Theater carolers and the First Presbyterian Church Handbell Choir.

SHAREHOLIDAYMELODIES
Fellow City employees joined together to make a joyful noise during the holiday season by singing well-known songs.
Under the direction of Rebecca Coplin and Matthew Truitt, the carolers had two performances this year. The first took place at the High Point Police Department’s Holiday Luncheon and the second performance was held in the lobby on the second floor of City Hall.
The Customer Service Department hosted a holiday luncheon at High Point Theatre, full of food, festivities, and fun!
