Lucky Strikes Bowling (Ages 5+)

Looking for some weekend fun? Bowlers, friends and families with players of all abilities are welcome! Ramps are available if needed. Bowlers will pay High Point Bowling Center $2.50 per game directly for their games, not to exceed two games per week. All bowlers must be registered and paid by 9:45 a.m. each week. Super Social Supper Club (Ages 8+)

Learn the basics of restaurant etiquette through this fun and social program. Learn how to place a food order, pay a bill and calculate a tip. We'll introduce the aspiring young gymnast to the fundamentals of gymnastics! With assistance from a parent or guardian, this class will focus our participants on balance, coordination, listening skills and following directions.

High Point Aces Fastpitch Softball League (Ages 8 - 12)

Are you ready to step to the plate and represent High Point as you become part of a fun, dynamic group of players who are committed to teamwork, skill development and a love for the game? High Point Parks & Recreation is excited to announce tryouts for our 10U and 12U travel softball teams! Chair Yoga (Ages 50+)

Participants will work on improving flexibility and strength, focus on improving balance in standing poses and develop mindfulness and relaxation techniques. We will learn seated and standing positions for strength and balance, then practice stretching, followed by a brief relaxation and meditation period to conclude the session. Participants should be able to maintain both seated and standing positions with the assistance of a chair.

Senior Elite (Ages 50+)

Introducing the "Senior Elite" program, formerly known as AHOY! Senior Elite is a low-impact fitness class with lightintensity exercises performed to music. Typical routines include walking, stretching and range of motion and strength-building exercises. Senior Elite will also go on a variety of day trips, play bingo, enjoy lunches and celebrate participants' birthdays. Bring a friend and become the elite! Cardio Drumming - Drums Alive Golden Beats (Ages 50+)

The rhythmic patterns of the drum increase synchronization of brain wave activity and endorphins and decrease negative feelings. This modified evidenced-based program, specially designed for the senior population, is taught by a Drums Alive Golden Beats certified instructor.

Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program (Ages 50+)

We are pleased to offer a low-impact recreational exercise program with a brief educational component that may help those with arthritis at all activity levels improve functional ability, self-confidence, self-care, mobility, muscle strength and coordination. This program may also help participants reduce fatigue, pain and stiffness.

Yoga for Seniors (Ages 50+)

The practice of yoga offers a multitude of benefits. It helps with breathing and posture, as well as meditation to integrate your mind. Stretching, bending and balancing help to align the head, neck and spine. Yoga can also stimulate the circulatory system and keep muscles and joints strong and flexible. Studies show that yoga helps reduce the risk of heart disease by lowering blood pressure and anxiety levels, induces relaxation and can be useful in pain management.

Step into a world of fun, fitness and friendship with our country line dance class for beginners! This intermediate to advanced level class is not only a great form of exercise and a good way to maintain or improve focus; it's also so much fun! Ballet is an excellent way to practice balance and improve fitness! Paleo Camp (Ages 8 - 12)

Campers are invited to spend the day with PEC staff naturalists, exploring the natural and cultural history of our area. Through engaging activities on the trails, in the tipi and in the classroom, campers will look back in time to learn about five geologic and historic time periods. Activities include hiking forest trails that follow old horse and buggy roadbeds, sorting fossils, spear points and other artifacts, observing plants and animals that provide clues to what life was like long ago and storytelling inside our 20' tipi.

Night Sky and Telescope Workshop (Ages 8+)

Learn to use your telescope and navigate the night sky during this three-night workshop at Piedmont Environmental Center. Participants learn how to set up and use their own telescope or may use the telescopes and binoculars provided by PEC. Of the three nights, hopefully, one or more of them will be clear for viewing. Mars and Jupiter are in an excellent spot, as well as Orion's nebula, the Pleiades star cluster and the Andromeda Galaxy. Between viewing times or if it is cloudy, the workshop continues inside. By the end of the full workshop, participants will have learned to polar align a telescope, learned the merits and limits of different kinds of lenses, practiced star-hopping methods for locating planets, star clusters and nebula, become familiar with the characteristics of different classes of stars and traced star patterns that form asterisms and constellations.

Everyday Nature (Ages 8+)

Nature is all around us and inside us. All that is in nature is in human beings. Guided by a PEC naturalist, we will take a slow stroll in the forest to soak in all that nature provides and how we are dependent on the natural world. We will look for the small, everyday occurrences that are happening all around us as well as the big, exciting changes that happen in springtime. After the walk, we will reflect on our time and practice nature journaling. Participants will receive a small pocket journal and pencil but can also bring their own supplies. This program is being offered as part of the N.C. Science Festival and is open to adults and families.

Outdoor Adventure & Nature Education

Ducks and Donuts (Ages 13+)

Enjoy a light breakfast of coffee and donuts, followed by a winter trail walk to look for resident and migratory waterfowl. After our walk, we will caravan to other lakes and ponds that waterfowl are frequenting. Using binoculars and spotting scope, we will search for colorful migrant waterfowl such as buffleheads, hooded mergansers and northern shovelers.

Winter Walk on the White Trail (Ages 18+)

The Bill Faver Lakeshore Trail, sometimes called the "White Trail," is 1.8 miles long and passes through five distinct wildlife habitats at the Piedmont Environmental Center. A PEC naturalist will share its natural and cultural history as we spend the morning on the trail. In addition to the planned stops along the way, spontaneous interpretation of birds, mammals and evergreen plants will add highlights to the experience. Participants need to prepare a daypack and water bottle, wear sturdy walking shoes and dress in layers for the weather.

Sleeping Trees (Ages 18+)

Leaf shape is not the only way to tell what species of tree you are looking at! Join PEC staff this winter as we demystify the sleeping trees of the Piedmont using their bark, buds and leaf scars as clues. You will take home a Winter Tree Finder book, a hand lens and the "know-how" to identify trees in your backyard. This class will be held mostly outdoors, so please bundle up and wear comfortable shoes.

Wildflower Folklore (Ages 18+)

Folktales, superstitions and stories of plants can be charming and entertaining but are sometimes inconsistent with ecological or biological facts. A PEC naturalist will guide participants on the trails to identify and interpret the folktales and traditions associated with a dozen or more wild flowering plants. Also interpreted is a natural history of the plant that is woven into the network of a plant community. It is within that network and community that the plant's factbased story is told. Does the folklore match the true nature of the plant? Join us and find out!

In honor of Black History Month, we will have two guest speakers visiting Southside. Chief Curtis Cheeks, the first Black police chief of High Point, will speak on Friday, Feb. 7 and local journalist and radio host Busta Brown will speak on Friday, Feb. 14. High Point Greenway

The High Point Greenway is a 4.9-mile paved trail beginning at Armstrong Park (305 E. Parkway Ave.) and ending at Piedmont Environmental Center (1220 Penny Road).

High Point City Lake Park Trail - 0.5 miles (This trail connects High Point City Lake Park with the Piedmont Environmental Center)

Bicentennial Greenway

The 6.2-mile High Point section of the Bicentennial Greenway begins at the Piedmont Environmental Center (1220 Penny Road) and runs to Gallimore Dairy Road. The Greenway then travels through Greensboro, connecting to the Atlantic and Yadkin Greenway at the Guilford Courthouse National Military Park.

Natural Surface Trails

High Point offers 6.6 miles of natural surface trails through hardwood and pine forests and lakeside habitats in the North and South Preserves at the Piedmont Environmental Center (1220 Penny Road).

Southwest Heritage Greenway

This .44-mile paved trail runs between Vail Avenue and Grimes Avenue, with parking located at the Southside Recreation Center (401 Taylor Ave.). From Taylor Avenue to Grimes Avenue, enjoy the Botanical Woodland Teaching Garden, a helixshaped walkway that combines art with nature.

West End Cross Country Course & Walking Trail

A 1.5-mile natural surface walking trail is located at West End Park (1701 Edgewood Drive). This course can be reserved by groups for a cross country meet for $100 per meet. Please call 336.883.3480 to check availability.

Urban Hikes

In partnership with the High Point Library, we've created an Urban Hikes Map with eight trails starting from the High Point Public Library. All the hikes are accessible by sidewalk.
