After School & Winter Break Camps

After School Program (Grades K - 5)

Our after school programs offer a variety of activities, including homework time, gym games, arts & crafts, outside play and other planned activities. Parents are responsible for daily snacks. All after school programs follow Guilford County Schools traditional calendar and schedule for inclement weather-related closures.

Allen Jay Recreation Center

School bus transportation is provided from Allen Jay Elementary and Allen Jay Prep (fifth grade). Parents need to arrange school bus transportation at their child's school. Transportation is provided from Triangle Lake Montessori, Union Hill Elementary and Jamestown Elementary Schools. We accept drop-offs from home or other schools.

Deep River Recreation Center

Transportation is provided from Southwest Elementary, Phoenix Academy, Florence Elementary and Colfax Elementary. We accept drop-offs from home or other schools.

Oakview Recreation Center

Transportation is provided from Oakview Elementary, Shadybrook Elementary, Johnson Street Global Studies, Montlieu Academy of Technology, Northwood Elementary and Kirkman Park Elementary. We accept drop-offs from home or other schools.

Discovery Sports After School Program (Grades 1 - 5)

The Morehead Discovery Sports After School Program is designed to develop and improve the all-around sports skill set of each participant. Through drills and practice, participants will learn the fundamentals of a wide variety of traditional and non-traditional sports and games, as well as teamwork and sportsmanship. The result will be an ability to play sports in pickup or recreational play settings and sufficient instruction to try out and play for an organized team.

Junior Winter Camp (Ages 6 - 7)

This one-day camp is specifically designed for young nature enthusiasts. Campers will be engaged in outdoor nature trail adventures as they learn about the lives of plants, birds, mammals and other animals in the winter season. In the classroom, campers will warm up with a microscope lab and craft activities.

Winter Nature Camp: Artists (Ages 8 - 12)

As they explore the winter forest, campers learn to look at nature through the eyes of an artist. This one-day camp features two nature discovery hikes to learn about winter trees, pond life, birds and other wildlife. Watercolors, collage and tree sketching activities in the classroom reinforce the nature discoveries made during the hikes on the trails.

Winter Nature Camp: Scientists (Ages 8 - 12)

Campers learn to look at nature through the eyes of a scientist as they explore the winter forest. This one-day camp features two discovery hikes focusing on observing winter wildlife, aquatic organisms and the interactions between living and non-living things. Throughout the day's activities and hikes on the trails, campers practice taking measurements of specimens collected and recording observations. In the classroom, use of microscopes, magnifying lenses and measuring tools reinforce the learning discoveries.

Miracle League of High Point Fall Season (Ages 5+)

Everyone deserves the chance to play baseball! This program teaches youth, teens and adults with physical, intellectual and developmental disabilities the foundational skills of baseball through game play, sportsmanship and social engagement with peers. Inclusive Archery Open Gym (Ages 7+)

Variety Hour with ASPIRE (Ages 8+)

This program is designed to help participants with disabilities expand their leisure and recreation interests in a safe indoor space. Each Wednesday morning, ASPIRE will offer an expanded series of experiences that will include adaptive art forms, exercise techniques and games.

Super Social Supper Club (Ages 8+)

Learn the basics of restaurant etiquette through this fun and social program. Learn how to place a food order, pay a bill and calculate a tip. All registered participants need to bring money, arrive at 6 p.m. and be picked up by 7:30 p.m.

Day at the Fair (Ages 12+)

There is no admission fee but participants must bring money for rides, lunch, games and souvenirs.

Visually Impaired Variety Club (Ages 18+)

This monthly recreation program provides moral support and social engagement for individuals with vision impairments and their families. Activities vary by location and time each month. Interested participants must register the Friday before the program date.

This is a Special Olympics bowling competition for local school athletes and adult athletes. Little Flippers Gymnastics (Ages 1 - 4)

We'll introduce the aspiring young gymnast to the fundamentals of gymnastics! With assistance from a parent or guardian, this class will focus our participants on balance, coordination, listening skills and following directions.

Beginner Level Tennis (Ages 5 - 12)

All the basic skills of tennis will be covered, enabling each player to move to the next level. Players will learn how to keep score and rally using foam balls and appropriate-sized equipment on a smaller court to make learning the game fun and easy!

Citywide Youth Basketball League (Ages 6-12)

Are you interested in developing and refining your basketball skills to become the best player that you can be? We offer age and stage-appropriate skill development and a positive, enjoyable on-court experience for boys and girls interested in a competitive recreational basketball league.

The Clinic Pre-Season Mini Camp (Ages 9 - 12)

Student athletes, whether you're new to the sport and want to learn the basics or you're a more experienced player looking to improve your skills, our pre-season camp offers a program designed to help you achieve your goals. All aspects of the game are covered, from on-court fundamental instruction to off-court lectures.

All the basic skills of tennis will be covered, enabling each player to move to the next level. Players will learn how to keep score, learn the rules and etiquette of the game and learn how to rally and play points against one another to make learning the game fun and easy.

Fall Oak Hollow Open: President's Cup Edition (ages 16+)

Celebrating its thirteenth year, the Oak Hollow's President's Cup Edition is a two-person captain's choice, 36-hole event that will be flighted after the first round. Open to the first 60 teams, the 8 a.m. "Shotgun Start" for both Saturday and Sunday rounds gives golfers a chance to get a round in before watching football games in the afternoon! Seniors (ages 55+) will play from the white tees. This event will also include a Par 3 Challenge with the closest to the pin on all par threes on both days. Please note that the entry fee will go towards gift certificates and prizes and does not include green fee or cart fee. Over $8,400 in prizes and gift certificates will be awarded based on a full field.

We Ball Women's Basketball League (Ages 18-35)

Basketball is back! This league is for the ballers that still have game. Minimum six game regular season plus a single elimination tournament. Tournament champion receives championship shirts and a team trophy; tournament runner up receives a team trophy.

Poetry Therapy is widely practiced in a variety of diverse settings with various populations. This ongoing program provides participants the opportunity to explore poetry as a form of therapy. We will focus on the applications of the biblio-poetry method, a dynamic method of using literature, quotes, stories, lyrics and more to invite conversations and interaction among the participants.

Explore a new world of creativity! Create digital art with a popular new graphics app, Procreate, that can be used to design sketches, paintings and illustrations. Using iPads and Apple Pencils, participants will learn the fundamentals of the app, discover the various brushes and layers and explore shape, text and style as they create. Materials will be provided for in-class use only.

The practice of yoga offers a multitude of benefits. It can help lower blood pressure, increase relaxation and reduce stress and anxiety levels. Yoga also stimulates the circulatory system while keeping muscles and joints strong and flexible. It helps with breathing, posture and balance. Beginners are welcome to join this class!

BeneFIT Cardio (Ages 18+)

Burn calories and "BeneFIT" your cardiovascular health while having fun through dance! The instructor will lead you through the moves as you enjoy eight to ten hip hop, rhythm & blues and reggae songs for a great workout.

Beginners Ballet for Seniors (Ages 50+)

Ballet is an excellent way to practice balance and improve fitness! Our class will incorporate beginner ballet steps and poses along with simple, fun dance combinations to help with posture, strength and flexibility. Chairs may be used for stability if needed; participants should dress in comfortable clothing and bring a water bottle.

AHOY Exercise Class (Ages 50+)

Our AHOY exercise program is a chair-based, low-impact movement class designed for all levels of fitness. Routines include stretching, range of motion and strength-building exercises - plus a little bit of dancing!

Senior Line Dancing (Ages 50+)

This intermediate to advanced level class is not only a great form of exercise and a good way to maintain or improve focus; it's also so much fun! Walk With Ease (Ages 50+)

Participation in this six-week Arthritis Foundation program may reduce the pain of arthritis and improve your overall health! Whether you need relief from arthritis or just want to be as active as you can be, this program will teach you how to safely make physical activity part of your everyday life. Materials for the class will be provided, but please bring your own water.

Cardio Drumming (Drums Alive Golden Beats) (Ages 50+)

The rhythmic patterns of the drum increase synchronization of brain wave activity and endorphins and decrease negative feelings. This modified evidenced-based program, specially designed for the senior population, is taught by a Drums Alive Golden Beats certified instructor. Registration is required. Chair Yoga (Ages 50+)

Participants will work on improving flexibility and strength, focus on improving balance in standing poses and develop mindfulness and relaxation techniques. We will learn seated and standing positions for strength and balance, then practice stretching, followed by a brief relaxation and meditation period to conclude the session. Migrating birds become disoriented and distracted from artificial light produced by human activity. Each year this causes mortality among our migrating species. Our young naturalists will learn more about migratory birds and the importance of limiting lights during the migration season. Our learning adventure also includes story time and a craft, plus a short outdoor bird walk to practice our bird identification skills. All children must be accompanied by an adult.

Indicator species help scientists monitor the environment so that effective decisions can be made about ecosystem management. Simple changes in how we garden or maintain our landscape can have a big impact on the native ecosystem of which we are a part. As the seasons change, so does natural life on our trails. During this hike on the Deep River Trail of PEC's North Preserve we will observe a variety of plants and animals as they prepare for the colder months. Please meet in the parking lot at Jamestown Park and Golf Course by 9 a.m. Participants should be prepared to hike on an unpaved trail and are encouraged to bring along a pair of binoculars.

Strolling with Salamanders (Ages 13+)

What is lurking around after dusk? While walking through the darkening woods we will be flipping logs and rocks in search of an important indicator species: salamanders. Down East: Exploring by Kayak the Cedar Island National Wildlife Refuge (Ages 18+)

A weekend of fun and discovery awaits you! Kayak paddling in the marshes and small bays of the Cedar Island National Wildlife Refuge provides a firsthand look at estuaries supporting marine life, wading bird communities and an abundance of other wildlife. You will camp at Cedar Island Ranch and Campground and day paddle an average of five miles on Friday and Saturday. There may also be an opportunity to hike/ explore the North River Wetlands Preserve and the Rachel Carson Preserve near Beaufort. A Step in the Right Direction (Ages 18+)

Take a step in the right direction by learning the basics of map reading and using a compass - plus a few little-known details - without assistance from electronics! Participants will examine the characteristics of six types of maps, discussing the pros and cons of each, then practice using three different types of compasses. A short walk on the trails helps determine pace and how far one can travel in a set number of steps. Finally, putting pace, map and compass together, we will plot a course and go out to find the "treasures" placed on the trails.

Enjoy a long-standing High Point tradition on this annual guided tour, which takes park visitors around High Point City Lake on our excursion boat. Dick's entertaining and informative commentary, combined with amazing photographic opportunities, make this offering a seasonal favorite. Legal Aid Healthcare POA & Living Wills Clinic (Ages 50+)

The Senior Center will host a Health Care Power of Attorney and Living Wills Clinic and information session, led by Legal Aid of North Carolina and students from the Elon University School of Law. Participants must pre-register by contacting the Senior Center at 336.883.3584; please note that very limited space is available. They will then receive a follow-up screening call from the legal team, to determine if they meet financial eligibility requirements. Based on those results, Legal Aid will fully prepare and execute one or both of the advance directives documents for qualified individuals at the clinic. The information session on healthcare power of attorney and living wills will also be available during this clinic to participants who didn't qualify or were unable to get a one-on-one appointment.

Trails & Greenways

High Point Greenway

The High Point Greenway is a 4.9-mile paved trail beginning at Armstrong Park (305 E. Parkway Ave.) and ending at Piedmont Environmental Center (1220 Penny Road).

High Point City Lake Park Trail - 0.5 miles (This trail connects High Point City Lake Park with the Piedmont Environmental Center)

Bicentennial Greenway

The 6.2-mile High Point section of the Bicentennial Greenway begins at the Piedmont Environmental Center (1220 Penny Road) and runs to Gallimore Dairy Road. The Greenway then travels through Greensboro, connecting to the Atlantic and Yadkin Greenway at the Guilford Courthouse National Military Park.

Natural Surface Trails

High Point offers 6.6 miles of natural surface trails through hardwood and pine forests and lakeside habitats in the North and South Preserves at the Piedmont Environmental Center (1220 Penny Road).

Southwest Heritage Greenway

This .44-mile paved trail runs between Vail Avenue and Grimes Avenue, with parking located at the Southside Recreation Center (401 Taylor Ave.). From Taylor Avenue to Grimes Avenue, enjoy the Botanical Woodland Teaching Garden, a helixshaped walkway that combines art with nature.

West End Cross Country Course & Walking Trail

A 1.5-mile natural surface walking trail is located at West End Park (1701 Edgewood Drive). This course can be reserved by groups for a cross country meet for $100 per meet. Please call 336.883.3480 to check availability.

Urban Hikes

In partnership with the High Point Library, we've created an Urban Hikes Map with eight trails starting from the High Point Public Library. All the hikes are accessible by sidewalk.

Aderholdt Track (High Point Athletic Complex): one loop = .25 miles

Allen Jay Recreation Center and Park (1073 E. Springfield Road): one loop = .5 miles

Burnett Park (1051 Montlieu Ave.): one loop = .3 miles

Washington Street Park (738 Washington St.): one loop around playground = .1 mile

Washington Terrace Park (101 Gordon St.): one loop = .3 miles
