Department Happenings Special Populations is now called ASPIRE!
High Point Parks & Recreation’s Special Populations section is now known as ASPIRE: Adaptive Sports, Programs & Inclusive Recreation. This new name reflects trends and issues in parks and recreation relative to inclusive programming and universal design. The mission of this section is to provide social, emotional, physical, cognitive and spiritually stimulating recreation and leisure services to individuals with disabilities. “To aspire is to direct one’s hopes or ambitions towards achieving something, to rise higher,” said Leanne Lyons, ASPIRE supervisor with High Point Parks & Recreation. “The ASPIRE team is committed to offering programs that positively affect people of all abilities for the greater good and directly benefit our participants and their families as they “play, learn and enjoy” through High Point Parks & Recreation."
ASPIRE’s services are available to residents of the City of High Point and surrounding communities, providing programs such as Camp Ann, the Miracle League of High Point and Special Olympics Guilford/High Point. It also offers recreation opportunities like adaptive sports as well as social events like the Super Social Supper Club, annual holiday dances and day trips. Additional services include inclusion support, education and training to individuals, families and community members. Upcoming opportunities include The Big Three Challenger Flag Football League, Adaptive Tennis and Halloween and holiday social events. For more information on how to get involved or volunteer, please call 336.883.3477.
Girl Scout Donates Little Free Library at Goldston Park We’d like to recognize and congratulate Sarah Felder, a student at Greensboro College Middle College. Sarah attends Church of God of Prophecy in High Point and created a program called “My Little Readers Club” as part of her Girl Scout Gold Award, the most prestigious award that Girl Scout seniors and ambassadors can earn. Working alongside her stepfather and a team of volunteers, Sarah has donated four Little Free Libraries around High Point, including one at Goldston Park (1302 S. Elm St., High Point). She’s also collected donations of over 800 books to stock them and volunteers her time reading to children in second to sixth grades at Growing the Distance and Sprouts.
“Through this project, I found my passion for helping my community and Sarah Felder the youth,” said Sarah. “I have been a Girl Scout since first grade and have developed my skills in community service over those years. I am in the twelfth grade now and working on that part of my Gold Award. My project focuses on encouraging literacy and a love for reading at an early age, and my topic for research was helping children of color and kids who do not have access to books. Kids can eventually lose the inspiration for reading as they get older, leading to grammar, literacy and comprehension problems. I want them to have books they can relate to and to help build that love for reading.” Sarah, from all of us at High Point Parks & Recreation, thank you for your support of literacy and the youth of our community and the donation of a Little Free Library at Goldston Park! www.highpointnc.gov/pr

Department Happenings Welcome, New Parks & Recreation Commissioners! The Parks & Recreation Commission is an advisory body comprised of nine members appointed by the High Point City Council. Members serve as representatives of the community and as advocates for various programs, facilities and staff for recreation-related services. Eric Abeles is one of our newer members of the High Point Parks & Recreation Commission; he began his term in 2020. Eric grew up in High Point, is a proud graduate of East Carolina University (go, Pirates!) and works as an Account Executive with Level Solutions Group. Abeles grew up in High Point, is a proud graduate of East Carolina University and works as an account executive with Level Solutions Group. He enjoys Crossfit and watching football with his wife, Cheridan, who is a nurse. His stepson Harrison Lipe is currently serving in the US Army. When asked why he said “yes” to this volunteer commitment, Eric replied, “I love High Point! High Point is my home.” Lauren Britton also began her commission term in 2020. Lauren, who grew up in High Point, graduated from Anderson University and works as a furniture sales representative. She and her husband Trey have a beautiful daughter named Amelia, who thoroughly charmed everyone at our recent volunteer picnic! Lauren enjoys working out, coaching basketball and travel and says, “I grew up here and always want to find ways to give back. I also love being outdoors, so parks & recreation seemed like the perfect fit and an opportunity to get involved with my community.” We are also excited to welcome Derek Pegram as a new member of the High Point Parks & Recreation Commission! Derek grew up in Greensboro, graduated from Northeast Guilford High School and enjoys golf. He is the general manager for Royal Limousine and is also self-employed with Htv Streams. We are so appreciative of Eric, Lauren and Derek’s volunteer service this past year and are pleased to officially welcome them to the High Point Parks & Recreation Commission.
