Astheweatherbeginstowarmup,theoverwhelmingurgetostartspring cleaningmightbehittingyourhome.Buthavenofear--theCityof Independenceisreadytohelpyougetridofall thatjunkyoumighthave layingaround.

OnSaturday,April 13,theDrop-OffDepotwill openforthefirsttimethis season.TheDepotisopenfrom8AM-3PMthesecondSaturdayofeach monthbetweenApril andOctober.It'slocatedat875VistaAve(onemileeast ofM-291onTrumanRoad,northofVistaAvenue).

TheDepotisopentoIndependenceresidentsonly--avaliddriver'slicense orrecentutilitybill isrequiredforentry.

Itemsacceptedinclude:Furniture,mattresses& boxsprings,carpet, plumbingfixtures,sheetrock,windows,shingles,fencing,landscapetimbers, bricks,pavingstones,limbs,firewood,bushes,stumps,refrigerators,freezers, stoves,dishwashers,hotwaterheaters,washers,dryers,lawnmowersand car,boat,lawnmowerandbatteries.

Itemsacceptedinclude:Batteries,paintandpaintproducts(includingaerosol cans),varnish,stripper,turpentine,fluorescentlightbulbs,gardenandyard

products(herbicides,pesticides,weedkiller,ratpoison),automotivefluids (antifreeze,usedmotoroil),householdcleaners(drain,toilet,oven), kerosene,mercurythermometersandusedmedicine.

TheIndependencePoliceDepartmentwill alsobeonsitetocollectunwanted ammunition,firearms,fireworksandotherexplosiveitems.

MarchmarksthestartofsevereweatherseasoninMissouri whichmeanswe couldbeginseeinghighwindsandheavythunderstormsanydaynow.Trees thataretooclosetopowerlinescaninterferewithyourelectricservice-especiallyinsevereweathersituations.

Ifyouplantotrimyourtreesbeforesevereweatherstrikes,besuretostay10 feetawayfrompowerlines.Ifthere'sachancethatabranch,tool,clothing itemorbodypartcouldcomeincontactwithapowerline,whetheractiveor not,donottouchthebranch.

Eachyear,theAmericanPublic PowerAssociation(APPA),ofwhich IPLisamember,holdsanannual legislativerallywheremembershave theopportunitytomeetanddiscuss legislativeitemsandtheireffectson theenergyindustry--especially thoseimpactingpublicpower utilities.

Thisyear,HegendefferandVillegas metwithnumerousstaffoftheU S HouseofRepresentativesandmet withthetwoMissouri U S Senators-Sen EricSchmittandSen Josh Hawley Discussionsincludedthe importanceofpublicpower,current obstaclesfacedandcurrent legislationthatcouldimpactIPL's abilitytodeliversafe,affordableand reliableservicetoresidents.

Thismonth,wewanttospotlightourRockCreekWastewaterTreatment PlantstafffromourMunicipal ServicesDivision.

Earlierthismonth,theRockCreekWastewaterTreatmentPlantwas awardedtheMissouri WaterEnvironmentAssociation's(MWEA)Large WastewaterTreatmentFacilityoftheYearfortheStateofMissouri!

Thisawardisinrecognitionofoperational excellencedemonstratedat wastewatertreatmentfacilitieswhosecapacityexceeds7.5milliongallonsa day.Operatingourtreatmentfacilityatsuchahighlevel requiresamazing staffall workingtogethertopromotepublicandenvironmental healthandwe couldn'tbemoreproudofourteamforbeingrecognizedwithsuchahighly esteemedaward.
