First Ever Fall Festival is Oct. 12 The City of Irving is falling into autumn! The inaugural Fall Festival is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 12 at Whistlestop Plaza, 123 W. Irving Blvd. And the city staff has gone over-gourd with the pumpkins! They are planning pumpkin painting, pumpkin bowling and a pumpkin patch for perfect Instagram-able moments. Visitors also can expect carnival-style games, food and music — all to welcome the fall season. When the fun is over, the pumpkins are free to take
home, but only to Facebook friends. Families who prove they have liked and followed the new Irving Parks and Recreation Facebook page can take a pumpkin home for free. The page can be found by searching @IrvingParksandRec. Residents can pull up the page on their phones and show an event employee. Pumpkins will be given away on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last. For more information, visit IrvingEvents.org. n
Illuminate Irving Shines a Light on Domestic Violence Community event to raise awareness, share resources and honor victims One in 4 women and 1 in 7 men will be victims of domestic violence by an intimate partner in the United States, according to national statistics.
CITY SCORES ‘HOLE IN ONE’ WITH IRVING GOLF CLUB Irons are swinging daily at the Irving Golf Club. If residents have not paid a visit to the newly renovated course, they will soon get their chance. The Irving Parks and Recreation Department along with city leaders are hosting a grand opening event and inviting everyone to attend. The event is on Oct. 19 at the Irving Golf Club, 2000 E. Shady Grove Road; additional details will be advertised before the event. Players started hitting the greens in August. The course was renovated to include new greens, fairways and tee boxes, a reroute of eight holes and a new irrigation system. Architects reversed the layout of the course to appeal to players of all skill levels. Also new are the clubhouse and kitchen. When players are not chasing a ball down the fairway they can relax, grab a drink or a bite to eat, and take in the view of the course against the Dallas skyline. The kitchen offers an array of options from small bites to heartier meals and beverages.
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and the Irving Police Department (IPD) and the city’s Family Advocacy Center (FAC) are bringing awareness to this serious crime through their annual Illuminate Irving ceremony.
All rates are subject to change without prior notification. For up-to-date rates, contact the Irving Golf Club or check the online tee times. Tee times can be made up to 7 days in advance.
Illuminate Irving: A Night of Remembrance and Hope will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Oct. 15 along Mandalay Canal, 200 E. Las Colinas Blvd. The event is free and open to the public. Free parking is available at the Mandalay Towers Garage.
Players must show valid proof of Irving residency to get the Irving resident discount. Must be at least 16 years of age with a valid driver’s license to operate a golf cart. A 24-hour cancellation notice is required for all reservations.
“Domestic violence is a community issue, and we want to talk to our residents about it,” said Irving Police Chief Jeff Spivey. “The first signs of an abusive partner start with a belittling comment or controlling behavior, and people need to understand this abuse may progress to physical violence.”

Attendees also can honor domestic violence victims by writing the names of survivors and victims on lanterns that will float down the Mandalay Canal. During the event, IPD encourages attendees to learn about the FAC’s free counseling services for victims and their families. FAC staff will be available to answer questions and provide resources.

Budget Letter from the Mayor and Council on Pg. 8 Residents were invited to provide input on the Fiscal Year 2019-20 budget to help shape the future of the city. Irving City Council’s Budget Retreat was held on Aug. 21. The budget was adopted at the council meeting on Sept. 19. The budget letter provides an overview of the City of Irving budget highlighting enhancements, school district tax rate comparison, property tax rate and expenditures for fiscal year 2019-20. Irving Golf Club enforces proper golfing attire and does not permit tank tops, cut-off shorts or T-shirts on the course. Golfers arriving to play that are not in compliance with the dress code will be asked to change prior to teeing off. Irving Golf Club is a soft spike facility (no metal spikes).
