Welcome to the City of Joondalup Festival, named Best Community Event in WA at the 2014 and 2015 Australian Event Awards. The theme for the 2016 Festival is: Oh, the Places You’ll Go! with programming that will inspire people to remember their childhood dreams, consider their passions and create new aspirations. This year the Big Top has been replaced by three smaller, more intimate venues – The Commonwealth Cube, The Great Place and The Gold Digger. The international flavour of the Joondalup Festival continues in 2016 with acts from the UK and Italy, and look out for the roaming Ear, Nose, Mouth and Eye from Victorian-based artists known as the Snuff Puppets. The Twilight Lantern Parade also returns with more participants than ever before, while Central Walk comes alive with market stalls. There will be an earlier start on day two of the Festival (12.00noon), and a 7.00pm fireworks display on Sunday making the Festival more accessible for families. The 2016 Joondalup Festival invites you to explore an inquisitive world and playful re-imagining of size and scale across the Joondalup landscape. This year’s theme is Oh, the Places You’ll Go! For the first time, the 2016 Joondalup Festival will debut three new performance venues in Central Park – The Commonwealth Cube, The Great Place and The Gold Digger. Each venue offers a journey of performance, story-telling and theatre that will inspire your imagination. The Gold Digger promises to excite the senses with a mix of circus, cabaret, comedy, jazz, magic and hypnotism. Sponsored by Commonwealth Bank, The Commonwealth Cube will light up Central Park and contain a variety of musical performances. The Great Place (for kids!) will host all of the children’s theatre shows over the Festival weekend. The international flavour of the Joondalup Festival continues in 2016 with a highlight performance from Di Filippo Marionette, an international marionette company who bring their acclaimed Hanging by a Thread puppetry show to Western Australia for the first time.
Saturday 19 March, 2.00pm – 6.00pm Sunday 20 March, 12.00noon – 6.00pm Follow gigantic kites and look for (but please don’t take) miniature dolls from around the world as you make your way through The Magic Garden to the Wild Space stage, programmed by Red Top Creations. This outdoor stage will play host to a variety of circus acts every half-hour. Adults and young children can explore the learning and play experiences at the Goodstart Early Learning marquee next to the pond. Challenge yourself and discover through playing with goop, playdough, clay and many more treats.

The WA Youth Jazz Orchestra performs classics from the jazz heroes of the 20th century, including Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Stan Kenton, Billie Holiday and more. Di Filippo Marionette (Italy) is an international marionette company, who want to share their marionettes with the world in Hanging by a Thread. They have performed in Italy, Spain, France, Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, Belgium, Peru, Argentina, Australia and the USA (including the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival) bringing the magic of marionettes to people of all ages. A show without words, Filippo brings to life, with each marionette, different stories and situations, both poetic and surreal.
Benjamin and Me Benjamin is Will’s best mate in the whole wide world. Benjamin is also a dog. One morning, Will wakes up with an idea. He has decided to build the first ever boy-dog operated flying machine. And so, this coming-of-age adventure takes to the skies. Follow the extraordinary journey of this young boy, his dog, their wild imagination and a ukulele. This show features a smattering of songs, crazy contraptions and illustrations by visual artist Jacinta Larcombe. Benjamin and Me is a show for families and adventurous adults. Suitable for children ages 8+.
A Hard Day’s Night The Community Choral Project returns for its fourth year, featuring two highlight performances on Sunday 20 March 2016. A Hard Day’s Night will take you on a journey back to the 1960s when English rock band The Beatles formed in Liverpool and grew to become widely regarded as the greatest and most influential act of the rock era. Under the expert musical direction of Jangoo Chapkhana, the Joondalup Community Choir will present an up-beat program interspersed with some beautiful ballads including All You Need Is Love, Ob-La-Di, Ob-LaDa, The Fool on the Hill, When I’m Sixty-Four and Yesterday. Come along to watch your community perform at 3.45pm and 6.00pm on Sunday 20 March 2016.
Saturday 19 March, 9.30pm (performance starts) Central Park, Joondalup City Centre Grab a bite to eat, pull up a bean bag and settle in to watch American silent comedy film The General starring Buster Keaton, accompanied by musical artists Viola Dana. This is set to be a dynamic and unique experience that will illuminate a masterwork of the silent film era. Viola Dana’s sound can best be described as a mixture of folk, jazz and contemporary classical music.
Youth Music Event at Arcade Nightclub Twilight Lantern Parade Saturday 19 March, 6.45pm Mayor Troy Pickard will formally open the Festival from the alfresco dining area before the Twilight Lantern Parade travels along Grand Boulevard and Boas Avenue. Come along to witness the magic of an illuminated parade featuring over 1,500 participants.

Reviving an era of frivolity and splendour with a fresh and modern twist, Nicola’s music takes its influence from notorious characters throughout history, movies from the golden era and parties straight from the Twenties. Matt Hale, winner of three national comedy awards, is a professional stage hypnotist based in Australia. Hale has hypnotised people all around the world from London to Las Vegas (where even Mike Tyson told him: “you are amazing”). Combining the fun of total audience participation with the incredible abilities of the mind, he turns traditional hypnosis on its head, highlighting the talents and creativity of the volunteers for big laughs instead of embarrassing them. Expect to see hypnotised volunteers transported into bizarre car journeys, talking alien and unleashing talents they never knew they had.
