Not only are libraries celebrating the Joondalup Festival, we are also celebrating the WA Tree Festival. We hope you can join us for some of these special events.

We are excited about the launch of the Duncraig Adventure Hub and our three sensory monster events delivered in partnership with local author and illustrator Sean E Avery.

National simultaneous story time

Monday 19 – Saturday 24 May, 10am City of Joondalup Libraries

Every year a picture book written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator is read simultaneously in libraries and schools around the country. This year’s special book is The Truck Cat written by Deborah Frenkle, illustrated by Danny Snell. The Truck Cat is a story about cats and humans, immigration and identity, and homes lost and found. Visit the libraries for story time all week where we will feature this wonderful book and celebrate the joy of reading. No cost. No bookings required.

WA Tree Festival returns!

Join us for a month-long celebration of trees, biodiversity, wildlife and the beautiful outdoors.

Trees keep us cool, provide habitat for wildlife, make our gardens and streets look and feel better, and can improve our physical and mental health and wellbeing.

Grow your knowledge of trees this year with a variety of treemendous activities for all ages.

Go beyond the bark on an outdoor tour where you’ll discover some of our local giants, or branch out your creative skills by joining in fun workshops.

WA Women’s Hall of Fame Photographic Exhibition

So much of what we do in everyday life has a technology component. Drop in to one of our popular information sessions to increase your skills and digital confidence. These are information sessions only but you can bring along your own phone or device.

Discovery Outbound offers a variety of fun activities and outings for people aged 50 years and older, who enjoy being active, creative, entertained or learning new things.

Sensory monsters – Duncraig Adventure Hub

We are looking forward to the launch of the new Duncraig Adventure Hub and sensory monsters playground located next to Duncraig Library. Help us to celebrate by joining award-winning children’s authorillustrator and primary school teacher, Sean E Avery, and paediatric occupational therapist Caris Bailey, for a series of sensory activities that link into the new playground. Sean and Caris have written a new picture book called Sensory Monsters Playground Adventure to help parents learn about sensory processing and ways to support their own little sensory monsters.

Playground Adventure after which children can identify and learn more about their own sensory preferences. They can then unleash their creativity by designing and building their own unique sensory monster plasticine model. These events are free, however online registration is essential.

The Injury Matters team will present an information session about preventing falls, removing common hazards to make your home safer, and moving your body to improve balance and strength. The session will include a game of Bingo-cise for fun and will finish up with an enjoyable morning tea. No cost. Register online.

Discovery session – Growing mushrooms

Learn how to sustainably grow your own gourmet mushrooms using upcycled buckets in this interactive talk with Simon from MycoCasa. Explore the various stages of mushroom cultivation, learn some simple tips and tricks for success and how to make your own oyster mushroom growing bucket.

Parenting session – Reading Ready

Wednesday 26 March, 10am – Whitford

Library

If your child is in kindy or pre-primary this year, they are at the start of the exciting journey of learning how to read. This workshop will give parents and carers insight into what children need to know to read a word, and how to supplement their learning at home through our Reading Ready pack. At the end of the workshop, participants can borrow the pack. Cost $5. Book and pay online.

This Project has been supported by funding provided by the State Government of Western Australia, through the State Library’s Better Beginnings program.

Forget-Me-Not Memory Café

Fourth Friday of the month, 10am Duncraig Library

The City of Joondalup hosts a regular dementia support café in partnership with Forget-Me-Not for those living with memory loss, their carers and loved ones. The Memory Café aims to provide a supportive social network in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. Register your interest by calling 9400 4790.

Memory bags

These light, takeaway bags, include themed books, activities, props and conversation prompts. They can be used by families, friends or carers of people living with dementia, as a way of triggering happy memories and nostalgia. The bags are available for loan with your library membership.

Switch Your Thinking (SYT)

Joondalup Libraries have partnered with the State Government’s SYT Energy Efficiency Pilot Program to support residents and local small to medium businesses to build energy literacy and implement efficiency measures into their homes and businesses.

SYT will deliver free online and in-person workshops. Check their website for further information.

Energy audit kits

From March 2025, each library will have a kit that is available for a 7-day loan to help you measure your home or businesses efficiency. Each kit includes a thermal camera, power monitor, water flow measuring equipment and a manual full of instructions and energy saving tips.

Discovery session – Laughter yoga

Have you ever wondered when, how and why babies move from breast/bottle feeding to solids, and why some children make this transition easily and others don’t? A woman’s body and lifestyle changes after having a baby. Discovery session – Republic to empire

The Roman Republic relied on a system of powersharing checks and balances that provided inspiration for modern democracies. Yet as it expanded to become one of the greatest powers of the ancient world, increasing instability led to the rise of the Roman Empire. Joondalup Libraries has partnered with the Children’s University to promote learning beyond the classroom and access to quality extra-curricular opportunities.

We can help you with all digital technologies including smart phones and tablets and online activities such as email. Sessions are available at all libraries.

Justice of the Peace (JP) service

This is a free service to the community and no appointment is necessary. If you need certified copies of documents, bring the original and the copies to be signed. Some documents require a second witness so please bring someone with you if this is the case.
