THE SMALL GLORIES Thursday, May 19, 7:30 p.m. The winter/spring portion of the LCC Presents 2021-2022 season provides an eclectic mix of music, theater and multimedia artists in performances that are thoughtful, provocative and just plain fun. Starting with the season’s closing act in May, Roots powerhouse duo Cara Luft and JD Edwards are The Small Glories, a musical tour-de-force planted on the Canadian prairie. Thrown together purely by accident for an anniversary show at Winnipeg’s venerable West End Cultural Centre, The Small Glories could almost make you believe in fate. With a stage banter that strikes a unique balance between slapstick and sermon, these veteran singer-songwriters have a way of making time disappear. 6

It’s not uncommon for listeners to find themselves laughing, dancing, crying, or caught up in a good old-fashioned sing-along. Their material is welcoming — songs of love, loss and landscape are delivered with soaring, interwoven vocals accompanied by various combinations of stomping claw-hammer banjo, guitar and harmonica. Luft, one of the original members of folk trio and harmony sweethearts The Wailin’ Jennys, and Edwards duplicate and reinforce each other’s many strengths and yet allow their distinct personalities to shine through, resulting in a live show that is as heartwarming as it is hilarious, as fingerpicking proficient as it is relatable, and as Canadian as it is…well, it’s very Canadian. But that hasn’t stopped them from winning over audiences from Nashville to
Australia. Their second album, “Assiniboine and the Red” (2019 Compass Records) earned #1 Album of the Year (Penguin Eggs Magazine) and won three 2020 Canadian Folk Music Awards. Stephen Thompson, co-creator of NPR’s "Tiny Desk Concerts," wrote this for the “Why We’re Excited” segment on NPR’s Austin 100:
“The Small Glories’ Cara Luft and JD Edwards perform winsome, bluegrass-inflected folk-pop music that’s only deepened by their loose and lighthearted onstage chemistry. The pair’s concerts often double as comedy shows, wherein byzantine song intros somehow magnify the escapism of the buoyant songwriting. MISSOULA CHILDREN’S THEATRE THE EMPEROR’S NEW CLOTHES
ELI BREAKS A LEG Fourth grade student Eli Isaacson, a participant in Lakewood’s theater camps since age 6, was prompted by his teacher to write about something he had achieved. We were thrilled when his mother, Lana, shared the article and poem Eli wrote about his Missoula Children’s Theatre experience. “I think theater teaches children so many valuable skills and especially can combat one of the greatest fears many adults have — public speaking,” Lana said. Read about Eli’s experience below.
Missoula Children’s Theatre will cast up to 50 local students in grades K-12 when it teams up with LCC Presents for a production of “The Emperor’s New Clothes” at the Lakewood Cultural Center January 24-29. The show is rehearsed after school throughout the week with two performances on Saturday afternoon, January 29. No advance preparation or experience is required; participants can simply register for the residency week. The directors will get to know the participants, assign roles and designate several assistant directors on the first day. In this original musical adaptation of the Hans Christian Andersen classic story, “dress for success” is good advice that the Emperor takes whole-heartedly, wanting to impress new friends. But where to stop? When the clothes (and other people’s opinions) become more important than the people of the kingdom, trouble brews. To help their beloved Emperor find the way back to his heart, his true friends create an elaborate “birthday suit” for the Emperor to wear for his birthday parade celebration. The Emperor quickly and humbly learns that sometimes less is more! Registration is open for this week of creative fun and discovery. Participants must be able to commit to the full week although every cast member may not be called for every rehearsal. The cost is $75, and scholarship support is available for qualifying households. “On February 3, 2020, I went to the Lakewood Cultural Center in Lakewood, Colorado. I felt super nervous. I was going to audition to be in "Robinson Crusoe," and was against about 60 kids. Everyone that auditioned would get a part. Turns out, I did better than I thought. I got to be in the “Frowny Face Crew.” I had three full days and one half one to practice. We sang songs and we moved to a certain choreography. I was the last one in the lines that we walked out on, but I led one of the lines off stage. I got to take a mini tour backstage and became more familiar with acting. When Saturday finally rolled around, I had memorized my lines pretty well. I had one performance at about 1:00 and at 3:00. It was really fun and after the plays were over I got to see my grandma and got flowers. That was one of my first plays, so that was pretty big for me. Overall, I had lots of fun.”

Running Lakewood’s Heritage Culture & the Arts (HCA) programs relies on a strong volunteer core that is ready and willing to provide support. Of the 200-plus programs and events that took place in 2019, 2,517 volunteers contributed 15,759 hours to ensure that these activities were a success. Whether it is our longtime volunteer Jean Jackson making personal calls to fill vacant roles for the annual Cider Days at Heritage Lakewood or a dedicated Loretta Hopkins willing to volunteer as a performance assistant for a Cultural Center show that she has seen more than 10 times, HCA programs happen because of the volunteers. Each April, HCA celebrates Volunteer Appreciation Month. In 2021 and at the recommendation of a fellow volunteer, Jean Jackson received Denver 7’s Everyday Hero award. After the feature aired, she was contacted by AARP’s “Wish of a Lifetime.” They wanted to grant her a wish that resulted in a virtual greeting by a member of the Denver Broncos! As a volunteer with the City of Lakewood for over 30 years, Jean has taken on just about every role from leading walking tours to being part of a focus group who provided meaningful input during strategic planning. In more recent years, Jean has moved to an administrative role helping the volunteer coordinator by making
countless phone calls to the HCA volunteer corps. If there’s an opening in the schedule, Jean will find someone to fill it. She exemplifies HCA’s volunteer program. She connects with others to build thoughtful relationships by checking in on their well-being, learning family member highlights and ensuring that their volunteer experiences are meaningful. HCA has many volunteer opportunities — everything from serving as a greeter for exhibition openings to organizing materials for programs. YOUTH ARTS MAILIN PLAGGE the natural spaces our world has to offer. Her artwork has always been a way to express her findings to the rest of the world through light, color and texture.
Mailin, a Denver-based artist, is a new addition to our youth arts team and will be instructing Open Art Studio on Monday afternoons. She has been a practicing artist and art teacher for several years. Her works are in collectors’ homes throughout North America, and she has taught various levels of art classes both internationally and in the U.S. Mailin graduated from St. Lawrence University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts, concentrating on figurative work in oil paint. Since then, she has greatly enjoyed honing her skills in other 2-D media, including soft and oil pastel, charcoal and most recently acrylics. Her work can be categorized as realism, with painterly elements in many of her pieces. Throughout her work and travels, Mailin has developed an interest in how we as humans fit into the world around us and how we can use our creativity for good. Mailin’s two goals when she travels are to understand and give back to the communities she encounters, and to take in and explore

Most recently, Mailin has been exploring our natural world through acrylic paint, with a concentration on depicting flora and fauna from all across our globe. It is her hope that she can give viewers a sense of understanding and closeness with the natural world, in a time when it’s so easy to feel detached. Mailin’s art philosophy, in both practice and especially in teaching, centers on the belief that mistakes are a happy part of the learning process, that expression always trumps perfection, and that stretching our creative muscles is good for the soul. Creativity, perseverance and a healthy dose of self-reliance have always been at the heart of the urban homesteading revival. Ignited well before, but accelerated by the pandemic, this DIY movement is having much more than a moment, with Heritage Lakewood Belmar Park as the local epicenter. Urban homesteading-style crafts such as soapmaking, calligraphy and blacksmithing are proving to be as fun as they are practical.
SOAPMAKING KATRINA HOING EXPLORE CLASSES Lakewood.org/Register
Katrina has lived in Lakewood since 2001 with her husband who is a lifelong Lakewood resident. She is a self-taught cold process soapmaker and mom to a teenage boy and four cats. Katrina has been making soap, bath fizzies and other personal items for over eight years and began teaching classes for Lakewood’s Heritage, Culture & the Arts programs in 2019. Katrina believes it is extremely gratifying to make the things we use every day with our very own hands. Heritage Lakewood instructors, like Katrina, are helping students to craft their own household staples as they enjoy learning valuable new skills and self-sufficiency as they save money in the process.
Some students will continue to pursue the art of soapmaking and explore new techniques, dyes and fragrances on their own. Others enjoy their handcrafted soap and move on to the next adventure. Maybe they'll learn blacksmithing with Heritage Lakewood instructor Jeff Race. Or, they might choose to learn Spencerian with calligraphy artist Renee Jorgensen. In any case, Heritage Lakewood is sure to offer students a chance to learn, be more self-sufficient, save and to have a lot of fun while doing so. See you on the (urban) homestead!
Ironically, the art of soapmaking gets a little dirty. Students don protective gloves and eye equipment and immerse their hands in the fragrant liquid destined to become a unique soap. Katrina walks her students through the chemistry happening in front of them. Each block of soap begins to take on its own pattern of graceful swirls that will solidify into the soap the students will take home. Here’s how researchers and organizations from near and far have used Lakewood resources to support their work. Read the published articles and online resources at Lakewood.org/GoodNews. Sidewalk history tour For more than 20 years, the nonprofit organization Alameda Connects, and later the Alameda Corridor Business Improvement District, have served Lakewood’s Alameda Avenue corridor by helping address neighborhood needs. Recently, Alameda Connects created a self-guided sidewalk history tour, consisting of icons sandblasted into the concrete. Images include local farms and significant businesses such as the Villa Italia Mall. Future designs are in the planning process by working with descendants of one of the first African American families to move to Jefferson County as well as Native American artists from the area. Learning in the classroom Teachers from Lakewood schools have inquired about area information to use in their classroom instruction. in the Historically Jeffco magazine discusses the Montana School and Bear Creek High School in context of Lakewood's founding and diversification of the area's population. War horse purchasing station Professor Phil Homan from Idaho State University was on faculty sabbatical in 2019, researching Boer War (1899-1902) horses in Montana, Wyoming, Oregon, South Africa and the United Kingdom. He discovered information about the use of the Westfield Farm in Lakewood as a purchasing station for horses sent to Africa during this time. Heritage Lakewood provided additional information about the farm and several photographs for his research. The legacy of two Lakewood community members The Bonfils-Stanton Foundation, which fosters creative and connected community in the Denver region through the arts, proposed that Tom Noel write an article about the foundation's legacy. Tom, an author and columnist also known as “Dr. Colorado,” is professor emeritus of history and director of Public History and Preservation at CU-Denver. Besides introducing Tom’s students to local history, Heritage Lakewood also provided extensive information, oral histories and photographs to support his article detailing the story of the Bonfils and Stanton families and their philanthropy. ART EXHIBITIONS
AT THE LAKEWOOD CULTURAL & CIVIC CENTERS The turning of the calendar from year to year marks a changing of time and a chance to begin fresh, to start again with renewed energy. In 2022, the Lakewood Cultural Center’s exhibition schedule charges forward with a burst of rekindled vitality, welcoming back community partners for valuable and well-loved group shows as well as presenting carefully curated and thoughtful exhibitions, which reflect on our experience over the last two years and look forward to the potential of tomorrow. Exhibitions in the North and Richey galleries, running from January through the end of March, bring together artists and opportunities to literally and figuratively reflect on the past and the present. “Reflections,” a group exhibition in the North Gallery, assembles sculptural work by artists who employ the mirror as material, either as a tool for reflecting light, self-reflection, or to place the viewer within the work through a mirrored image of the environment. The works are cumulatively playful and serious and offer an opportunity to reflect on our place in the world. Howard Crosslen, "Sketchbook Self Portrait."
Howard Crosslen, a local artist with a nuanced ability to capture quiet and contemplative moments in paint, presents his solo exhibition, “Through Shadow and Light: A Story of Moments in Time.” This show shares the artist’s personal histories through intimate portraits, paintings of his dog, the light as it bounces off the walls in his house, and sketchbooks replete with the musings of an artist who sees the world though paint, pen and brush.

Supporting creativity and encouraging the value of arts for our young community members has been a great honor as the Cultural Center hosts annual exhibitions from Jeffco middle schools, Jeffco teachers and the Fletcher Miller and Sobesky schools. After a two-year hiatus of these exhibitions, we enthusiastically welcome back the all-gallery encompassing, much anticipated, “Jeffco Middle Schools Art Show” in conjunction with Fletcher Miller and
Sobesky schools, highlighting the exceptional talent of our youth from around the county. Simultaneously, Jeffco teachers will be invited to submit their own work to present in the Civic Center’s Richey Gallery juried exhibition, which will celebrate the artistic merit of the teachers who share the same artistic passions as their students.
