As a kid, Phillip-Michael Scales didn’t realize that his close family friend, a guitar player who called him “nephew,” was the legendary B.B. King. A Detroit native and Berklee College of Music graduate, Scales now delivers a mix of indie rock storytelling coupled with a passion for the blues and backed by lessons learned from “Uncle B” to create a sound he has coined as “dive bar soul.” This unique sound has carried him around the world, gained him national radio attention and an invitation to perform on the last season of the "Ellen DeGeneres Show."

7/10 | Los Mocochetes | Chicano Funk with this broken beat

With deep roots from the Mora Valley in northern Nuevo Mexico down to Juarez, Mexico, Los Mocochetes are a Xicano funk band from Denver. By combining elements of cumbia, reggae, hip-hop, rock and funk, the group composes music to unite the “gente” and create revolutionary music you can dance to. Every performance draws on the elements, the directions, the ancestors and the great mystery. Each song is a prayer meant to make the feet move, stir the spirit and resurface the memory of the innate ability to heal ourselves and the generations before and after us.

A mainstay in the annual Sounds Exciting lineup, Hazel Miller & The Collective have been delivering electrifying performances at the amphitheater for over a decade. Hazel was first noticed in her hometown of Louisville, Kentucky where she sang backup vocals for Al Green. Throughout her 54-year music career, Hazel has performed at the White House for Bill Clinton, opened for music icons including James Brown and James Taylor and earned herself a spot in the Colorado Music Hall of Fame.

7/24 | The McCharmlys | Vintage Rock ‘n’ Roll with The Charities

The McCharmlys are a five-piece combo from Santa Ana, California, currently taking the music scene by storm with their stylish blend of doo-wop, surf, beat and 60s style rock ‘n’ roll. LA Weekly called the band “an absolute joy” as they “recall sounds from the past while adding a contemporary edge that is attractive to punk, new wave and rockabilly fans.” Paired with The Charities, these two bands are the rising stars of rock ‘n’ soul.

7/31 | A.J. Fullerton | Blues with Dzirae Gold

Tennessee based rootsrock artist, originally from Colorado, A.J. Fullerton has carved his niche as a fingerstyle and slide guitarist, singer-songwriter and producer. Drawing on numerous influences from classic to contemporary, his latest record, "The Forgiver & The Runaway," debuted at No. 1 on the iTunes blues charts and hit No. 1 on the Colorado Roots Report. As one of the fastest rising names in the world of roots, rock and blues, A.J. has received numerous accolades throughout his career including 24 members choice awards from the Colorado Blues Society.

A pair of historic 1954 Bennett gas pumps were recently restored for the Peerless Gas Station by Heritage Lakewood

FUELING MEMORIES

Rehabilitation of the Peerless Gas Station at Heritage Lakewood Belmar Park is scheduled to be completed in the summer of 2024 . The building was originally constructed by Peerless Sheet Metal Works of Denver . Owner Joseph Rosenthal was born in 1900 in Romania and later moved to Colorado with his family . He married Colorado native Ruth Berger in 1926 and established his company near downtown Denver that same year . At Peerless Sheet Metal Works, Rosenthal and his employees created this gas station and other steel buildings from pattern pieces cut after sketching the shapes in chalk on the concrete floor . Joseph retired and closed his factory in 1963 and passed away the following year .

Although the exact date of construction for Heritage Lakewood’s Peerless Gas Station remains unknown, the architecture provides clues that narrow the construction window to the late 1930s or early 1940s. Simple boxlike stations, featuring aluminum accents and large plate glass windows, were prevalent during that time. The Peerless Gas Station also exhibits several characteristics of the Moderne architectural style, most common in Colorado during the 1930s and 1940s with an emphasis on the horizontal, streamlined effect, rounded

edges and corners and steelframe metal windows.

Due to the importance of the population boom in the 1950s that encouraged commercial growth and tourism in the Lakewood area, the historic gas station’s interpretation will represent the year 1954, extending its story beyond the original construction date to highlight a time important in Lakewood’s history. The 1950s decade saw the number of motels along West Colfax Avenue peak at 37, and many restaurants and other businesses opened their doors.

While the Peerless Gas Station was moved from a temporary holding location at a junkyard in central Denver and there are no records of its original location,

it is very similar to many stations that served West Colfax Avenue during the midcentury time period. A pair of historic 1954 Bennett gas pumps were recently restored for the gas station by Heritage Lakewood volunteer Chuck Houser. The pumps complete the picture of a year when a seafoam green Chevrolet Bel-Air with a V-8 engine, power brakes and power front windows could fill up for $0.29 per gallon!

Discover how making a difference in the quality of life in our city has evolved over the past century by visiting a new exhibition at Heritage Lakewood, “Get Involved: Civic Engagement in Lakewood,” open through December 1 . Uncover more Lakewood history at “Lakewood: A 20th Century Journey,” on display in the permanent exhibit gallery and at “Engaging with History,” posted in the historic outbuilding windows .

Lakewood has a rich history of community involvement. Historically, Lakewood residents got involved with local schools, agricultural organizations, outdoor youth movements and other special interest groups. Many of these beloved groups continue to thrive today. While some groups were chapters of larger national or even international organizations, those below were unique to Lakewood.

The Lakewood Woman’s Club was organized around 1941. The group facilitated programs about citizenship, holiday dinners for the boys at the State Industrial School, teas for senior groups and book clubs about international affairs.

Land near West Colfax Avenue and Wadsworth Boulevard was donated in 1937 to house the first station for the volunteer firefighters of the Lakewood-Mountair Fire Department . Building materials and labor were also donated, and local property owners contributed money for a fire truck and firefighting equipment.

Westernaires is a nonprofit composed of over 1,000 dedicated young people ages 9-19 and offering training in western riding, precision drills and horse care. The group started in 1949 at the Mississippi Stables on Wadsworth Boulevard as the Lakewood Riding Club.

The Lakewood Historical Society was organized in 1973 and was responsible for saving some of the early agricultural buildings that now comprise

Heritage Lakewood Belmar Park before transferring administration to the City of Lakewood in 1976. The group’s work in the Lakewood community currently includes supporting a citizen archaeology project, local landmark registration and Heritage Lakewood projects such as building preservation.

Civic engagement involves working to make a difference in the quality of life of the place you live. Collectors Support Exhibition

The collecting of American political memorabilia likely started in 1789 when the first George Washington, “GW,” inaugural item was made. Over the years, American political items not only advertised one’s favorite candidate, but left a vast amount of tangible political history for future generations to enjoy. Five collectors organized the American Political Items Collectors (APIC) in 1945, and the group has grown to 2,000 active members nationwide. The APIC sponsors a summer internship program with the Smithsonian Institution and researches and studies collectibles with presidential libraries and other institutions. The local chapter, the Mac McGraw Rocky Mountain Political Items Collectors, serves the Front Range of Colorado and Wyoming. For the "Get Involved" exhibition, several Colorado APIC members loaned objects that showcase political civic engagement locally and nationally, including posters, pins and pamphlets from the time period 1896 to the current 2024 campaign.

GET A LITTLE CRAFTY AT A CRAFT-TEA!

One Saturday of each month, Heritage Lakewood Belmar Park gets a little crafty with the charming, approachable and, most importantly, fun Craft-Teas . Lead instructor Lance Jones takes a break from working in public safety and teaching university-level history to dive into heaps of construction paper and googly eyes .

Bring the little ones for a fun craft and activity, followed by a snack and “tea” on the third Saturday of each month. Craft-Teas cater to our younger patrons, ages 3 through 12, and the $10 admission price includes both the child and one accompanying adult.

The highlighted crafts offered each month are approachable and easy to replicate at home, with materials such as pipe cleaners,

tissue paper, yarn and, everyone’s favorite…googly eyes! Themes are seasonal, along with the décor. The summer schedule offers the following dates and craft themes:

• June: Fun in the Sun!

It’s “tea-time!” In addition to crafts, the program provides snacks and a fun tea party experience that includes teas, apple cider and hot cocoa, alternating with cool and refreshing options in the summer! Learning from the past, some party elements have changed. The parties now offer some healthy options, such as fruit and take allergy and dietary restrictions into consideration.

While there is a suggested themed craft, our young crafters often create the most imaginative projects on their own. Lance

encourages creativity to flow and has seen all manner of creations from paper crowns and tiaras to pipe cleaner robots! Now that is a true (craft)tea party!

YARN “PAINTING!”

Calling all crafters with overflowing yarn stashes! Try this fun and summery “yarn painting” project perfect for solo crafting or a collaborative activity with the little ones .

SUPPLIES:

• Pencil

• Scissors

• Paper to protect the work surface (not pictured) .

• Poster board: In this project, a 5 x 5” piece of poster board was selected Suggested size for small hands is no bigger than 5 x 7” A mini canvas can also be used

• Selection of yarns: Thicker yarn strands are best for little hands . For those with an eye for detail, thinner yarn is a better choice . Select an array of complementary colors or create a design then gather the correlating colors .

• Color: Gather markers or paint in colors coordinating with the yarns being used The sample uses markers on a poster board . Acrylic paint is better suited for use on canvas and would require a paintbrush Quality is not important .

• Clear-drying glue: School glue was used in the sample but any white glue that dries clear would work .

Step 1: Create a design

Come up with a picture that can be split into sections. An abstract, curvy color block design was chosen in the sample. Using chunky yarn will speed up the process of the project and thinner yarn will show greater detail.

Outline the design on the poster board using a pencil. Make sure the design is split into sections.

Step 2: “Painting”

Use markers to fill the sections that will coordinate with each color of yarn. Go all the way to the edges and don’t worry about the overlapping–the yarn will cover any “happy accidents.”

Get creative in how the yarn is laid onto the poster board. Take some time to think about how the yarn will take shape within each section–will it be in straight lines, curvy lines, loops, or circles? Once you have decided, gather the yarn and glue.

Start laying glue onto the poster board in small portions. Add individual lengths of yarn using one long length, stretching it from edge-to-edge, looping it around, or going in circles. The marker color underneath helps cover gaps that would otherwise show through if left unpainted.

Step 3: Finishing touches

Use scissors to trim the loops and any excess yarn that hangs off the edges. Repeat all steps for each of the sections.

Finished! Now you have a unique piece of artwork to enjoy!

Meet Kris Crocker–Digitizing History

Kris is one of many volunteers who works behind the scenes in Museum Collections . She has become the “digitization expert,” whose passion for preserving history through technology has made her an indispensable asset to our Museum Collections volunteer team .

Preserving History at Heritage Lakewood Belmar Park

During Kris’ time volunteering in Museum Collections, she has spearheaded the digitization of the entire photograph collection and approximately a third of the collection of negatives . Following the scanning process, Kris meticulously crops and uploads the images into a database, creating a rich repository of reference photos for researchers and publications . Kris’ contributions don’t stop there . Recognizing the importance of knowledge sharing, she has authored comprehensive “how-to” documents to guide future volunteers, ensuring a seamless transition for those joining our digitization efforts . Kris is truly a key player in the mission of Heritage Lakewood to preserve and share the history of the community and her dedication and expertise are immensely appreciated .

Working alongside Kris is a team of wonderful collections volunteers who support a variety of projects including cataloging, archiving, scanning, researching and much more . With approximately 40,000 objects in the Heritage Lakewood collection, additional volunteers are always needed to help support the work that goes on behind the scenes .
