LET THE CREATIVE JUICES FLOW Washington Heights Arts Center

At Washington Heights, we work hard (at having fun!) to provide transformational creative experiences for anyone and everyone. Our historic schoolhouse-turned art center is an intimate education space for diverse creatives and makers to discover and achieve their artistic visions in a closely woven community. With a focus on adult visual arts education, our teachers and students work collaboratively to support a community invested in lifelong learning and self-expression. For over 20 years, our pottery program has grown and adapted to the needs of our students, expanding to an average of 50 classes, workshops and firings each season, as well as self-led sessions where students can work independently while connecting with their peers. From absolute beginners to advanced ceramicists, we want everyone to get their hands dirty, give some clay a whirl and feel fired up when they see their own amazing visions come to life. If pottery isn’t

your passion, we’re proud to offer a diverse range of arts programming from painting to fibers arts, woodcarving, mosaics and more. There’s something for everyone, so come on over and get creative!

GOING “OLD-SCHOOL”

Heritage Lakewood Belmar Park

Leaning into our roots as a 20th century museum and history park, we “keep it old-school” at Heritage Lakewood Belmar Park. In fact, we have a historic schoolhouse on-site that’s a perfect backdrop for our many school field trip visitors and a museum store that stocks plenty of retro toys and gifts!

“Old-school” crafts and skills are popular again as their value, sustainability and fun are rediscovered by new audiences. Heritage Lakewood’s friendly and knowledgeable instructors guide our students through a journey to learn and refine these heritage skills and crafts. Grasp a blacksmith hammer (Intro to Blacksmithing) or a calligrapher’s pen (Calligraphy: The Italic Hand), and leave your mark, on metal or parchment. Use chemistry and farmstead “know-how” to make your own soap (Soapmaking), or work with a talented artist to craft your own unique skateboard (Skateboard ‘Deck’orating). Immersed in our 20th century setting, classic techniques and new ideas are woven together as families learn together to create everything from braided potholders and friendship bracelets (Flashback Crafts) to transforming a bushel of apples into a refreshing treat (Cider Pressing). We can’t wait to see you at (old) school!

INTERCONNECTED COMMUNITIES

Interconnectedness is inherent in community . We are connected to one another and our place through interwoven networks: through the spaces within which we gather, the art we view together, the parks where we share walks, and the events that tie our important memories to locations and people . This theme of interconnectedness is a unifying element of the exhibitions hosted this fall at the Lakewood Cultural Center and Civic Center Galleries.

Animalia, a group show in the North Gallery including artist James Overstreet and others, will explore the taxonomic kingdom of all animals, including humans. The works, ranging from painting to sculpture, will touch on the human relationship and fascination with the animals

who share our homes and our environments. Animals, of the nonhuman type, have captured the imagination and awe of civilizations throughout history. We personify and imbue human notions of language and cultural characteristics onto all manner of animal species, sometimes

even through the creation of chimera, or completely new imagined beings. This human captivation with the animal kingdom demonstrates the intimate interconnectedness of creatures great and small. Visit the Lakewood Cultural Center galleries mid-September through the end of December to experience how artists are inspired by the world of Animalia.

The Lakewood Arts Council’s exceptional group show in the Mezzanine Gallery highlighting creative talent across an array of mediums, along with group and solo shows in the Richey and Corner Galleries from Shirley Santamaso, Tony Bugarin and more, round out this fall’s exhibition lineup. These shows each illuminate the ways in which we are interconnected through creativity, community, and culture.

SENSING LAKEWOOD RESTAURANTS

Heritage Lakewood Exhibition

Through January 28, 2024

Smell, touch and listen as you follow along on this multisensory tour through time from early beverage stands to longtime eateries that still exist today .

Low-sensory experience available January 2-28.

BEYOND THE PLATE

Restaurants have always been a place to satisfy our hunger, but the recent pandemic emphasized that we crave more than just food we desire multisensory experiences that engage all our senses. From the aroma of the food cooking to the ambiance of the restaurant, the décor and the laughter shared with friends and family, every aspect contributes to the overall dining experience.

The restaurant industry can be volatile, ever-changing and evolving. However, some restaurants have found the “secret sauce” to captivate our emotions and taste buds. As we welcome a reimagined Casa Bonita, we celebrate the restaurants that have made their mark in Lakewood and become a staple in our lives and iconic in our history.

The “Sensing Lakewood Restaurants” exhibit at Heritage Lakewood presents a journey through time and explores Lakewood restaurants and how they became an integral part of our lives. Beginning in the 1920s and moving to the present, the exhibit explores early beverage stands that were established for tourists and delves into the midcentury fast-food culture that swept the nation. Through this exhibit, we discover how restaurants have not only fed our stomachs but also our souls and created memories that will last a lifetime.

DELBERT ANDERSON: EXPLORING THE POWER OF IMPROVISATION

For as long as jazz has been around, musicians have used traditional genres, such as the blues, the Great American Songbook and gospel, as sources for inspiration . This creative lineage extends through to rising New Mexico trumpeter Delbert Anderson, but the traditional music that inspires him might be less familiar to most — Diné (Navajo) spinning songs .

With the spinning songs used for generations as behavior guides for members of the community, Anderson transforms the songs into the basis for profound and enrapturing improvisational jazz. And in the process, he’s made a prominent place for himself in the dynamic Native American jazz scene.

Lakewood audiences will be able to hear for themselves the power of the Delbert Anderson Quartet when the group comes to the Lakewood Cultural Center on Saturday, Nov. 4. The quartet includes Mike McCluhan on bass, Khalill Brown on drums and Robert Muller on keys.

“Anderson’s performance has been scheduled during Native American Heritage Month to offer a great opportunity to hear from this powerful cultural ambassador,” said Rita Sommers, Cultural Center administrator. “As one of the genre’s most exciting voices, there’s a reason Anderson is becoming so well-known in the jazz world.”

Anderson discovered the power of jazz and the possibility of improvisation at the same time. When he was in the fourth grade, a jazz combo performed at his school and the trombone player made an immediate impact, especially when he went off on an improvised solo. Anderson said he couldn’t get any sound to come out of the trombone when he tried, so he moved on to the trumpet and discovered his musical voice.

As he was starting out as a member of a large band and then his own trio, Anderson played the kind of standards-based jazz most listeners were already familiar with. But once he came upon examples of Diné spinning songs, his creativity was unleashed. It moved him to try different things with the Delbert Anderson Trio, including adding rap

elements to his sound. Now, his recently formed quartet further cements Anderson’s passion for creative evolution.

“The way my elders put it is a spinning song is like a tornado — it consumes everything around it, mixes it all together and spits it out,” Anderson said.

“Being around [my bandmates] is like we’re all caught up in this tornado, mixing cultures, abilities and musicianship. And when we put it all together, this is what comes out.”

Both spinning songs and jazz share the ability to capture a moment in musical form and this keeps Anderson continuously

By mining traditional Navajo ‘spinning songs’ of love, healing and courtship, and marrying them to jazz and funk lines, Anderson and his ‘quartet’ have taken a place at the forefront of a vibrant Native American jazz scene.

inspired as he performs. It makes each concert, where all four players create a sonic bridge between each other and their cultures, unique and unmissable.

“They’re all very great improvisers, so we can all kind of go a certain way if we want to, or we can get a little experimental,” he said. “But the music is always forward and very tasteful… I know it’s going to evolve into something great.”

Every year, Washington Heights hosts its much-anticipated Holiday Art and Pottery Sale . This year the sale will take place on Dec . 9 from 10 a .m . to 3 p .m . The sale features work from students and instructors . It’s an opportunity to support local artists and find a truly unique holiday gift . Volunteers play a big role in the Holiday Art and Pottery Sale—from greeting shoppers to helping carefully wrap purchases . It’s a fun way to get involved and give back to the community around the holidays .
