Lakewood will host INSPIRE Arts Week , May 25–June 3, to celebrate the vast variety of art offered throughout the city . During the 2023 events, more than 20 Lakewood galleries, cultural centers, shops and other art venues will host free and low-cost arts and culture experiences for the community .

INSPIRE 2023 will kick off at the Lakewood Cultural Center with exhibitions including:

The Lakewood arts facilities including Lakewood Cultural Center, Washington Heights Arts Center and Heritage Lakewood Belmar Park will host several free community arts engagement activities throughout INSPIRE Arts Week.

In the community, don’t miss an opportunity to connect with a myriad of local artists, galleries, makers and creative spaces at the First Friday Art Crawl at 40W Arts on June 2. Also experience the vibrancy of the Belmar Block 7 Galleries and participate in creative activities at Rocky Mountain College of Art + Design (RMCAD), and the Belmar Library, or take a walk along Alameda to experience the exceptional public art supported by Alameda Connects.

The week culminates with the Rockin’ Block Party at Heritage Lakewood Belmar Park on June 3. There is no better time than a Colorado summer to get out and celebrate the creative organizations and events that make up the City of Lakewood’s INSPIRE Arts Week.

Colorado-based painters Liz Lautrup, Jenny Wilson, and Jessica Loving collaborate in a show about creating a spacious moment of quietude, a sense of shelter borne out of the meditative practice of making the work as well as time spent experiencing these contemplative paintings. Explore representational and abstracted landscapes and spaces of the mind in A Space to ‘Be.’

Recalibrated Reflections: Creative mural interpretations of theatrical themes through the lens of diversity, inclusivity and community.

Lakewood Cultural Center, North Gallery

Part of a multidisciplinary arts project awarded funding by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), this exhibition assimilates the theatrical productions of “The Three Musketeers” and “Romeo & Juliet,” performed by The Acting Company in the early spring of 2023, with the creation of murals inspired by the performances. During the interactive Cultural Center gallery exhibition, a diverse panel of local muralists will work on-site in the North Gallery. Visitors will have the opportunity to transcend the role of spectator and engage directly with the artists to discuss the mural process while the painting occurs. Following the gallery exhibition, murals will be installed in temporary public art locations across the city’s five geographical wards. Stay tuned for more information on this event.

The Passions Project

“The Passions Project” is a portrait series created by photographer Heidi Wagner that captures the essence of older adults doing what they love to do. From painting, to theater, to community service, many older adults participate in activities they feel passionate about. Through her lens, Heidi makes visible what is often unseen — a new view of aging that includes vitality, independence and meaning.

City of Lakewood volunteers and staff come together to present their exceptional artistic talents. Though we may be performance assistants, gardeners, planners, police agents or administrators by day, everyone possesses creativity. Celebrate the artist within us all at this annual exhibition.

• Public Artist Receptions from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on June 2 at all galleries at 470 and 480 S. Allison Parkway.

• Open House/Community Activity on June 2 at Washington Heights Arts Center. Experience the fascinating process of Raku pottery and check out the engaging community-driven arts environment at Washington Heights Arts Center.

• Color and Create from 2 to 4 p.m. on May 26 in the North Gallery.

FREE! Coloring sheets themed around the stories of “The Three Musketeers” and “Romeo & Juliet” will be available for families to create their own artwork in the same space the artists will use to create murals for the Recalibrated Reflections exhibition.

• Rockin’ Block Party will be hosted on June 3 at Heritage Lakewood Belmar Park. This FREE event will feature live music, food trucks, a beer garden and a movie. Read more about this event on Page 22.

Finding Serenity

The mixed media, sensory captivating and serene work of three female artists – Jenny Wilson, Jessica Loving and Liz Latrup, will converge in the Richey Gallery in Lakewood Civic Center this summer in association with INSPIRE Arts Week. A Space to ‘Be’ is an exhibition with a moving motivation to soothe and make at peace the viewers who experience the paintings . The cumulative work creates a personal sanctuary, a space that offers all access to a nurturing moment of silence and quiet reflection though layered landscapes and atmospheric, abstracted compositions .

In an interview with the arts programming curator for the City of Lakewood, the artists reflect on their work and the exhibition:

What inspired your collaboration and desire to show your work together?

JL, LL, JW: Individually, as artists, we often explore quietude in our work. This spaciousness can be pulled from the actual physical experience of creating the work itself, but also when one views the work. In times such as these, overwhelmed is something we all feel all too often. This show explores the notion of holding space and creating a container for the viewer to simply be. It’s a breath, a meditation, a moment that viewers can savor all to themselves.

What do you want viewers to take away from their time spent with your artwork?

JL: I hope that viewers can access a sense of peace when visiting the exhibition. I hope that the pieces create a space that feels inviting, accessible and calming.

LL: It is my hope that people feel the peace in the space and the work, and that they can enter one or two of the artworks, as if they are entering another world, where they can experience the quiet power of the present moment.

JW: I hope that the viewer becomes entranced with the work and feels a sense of calm and serenity.

THE ART OF THE DRONE

Art reflects the influences of the surrounding world . In the 1800s, impressionism captured the immediate impression of a particular moment . This style evolved in the post-impressionistic era to include pointillism techniques, which use small, distinct dots to form an image . Today, a similar dot technique combined with drone technology can create large-scale entertainment.

Drone shows utilize groups of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) carrying LED lights to create mesmerizing, choreographed images resulting in a breathtaking visual experience. The art is a mashup of pointillism and marching band maneuvers carried out by drones in the sky. Since the first drone show, just over 10 years ago, software development has quickly allowed static images to become more sophisticated with the addition of movement and dimension.

Lakewood residents will have the opportunity to experience a drone show at the Big Belmar Bash on July 3 at Belmar Downtown Lakewood. This community celebration of our nation’s independence will include music, activities for kids, local vendors,

and food, and it will culminate with the drone light show after dark.

“We are thrilled to bring our drone light show to Lakewood and to share the wonder and magic of this unique form of aerial entertainment with the community,” said Rick Boss, director of Business and Development and partner for Sky Elements Drone Shows. “We can’t wait to see the reactions of the crowd as our drones take to the skies and light up the night.”

Rhythm & Blues

From the first note, everyone will be on their feet dancing to Hazel Miller & The Collective! With a high-energy show of jazz, rock, blues and everything in between, talented vocalist Hazel Miller continues to fortify her spot in the Colorado Music Hall of Fame. Hand-picked by Hazel, Wrenn & Ian bring an energy to the stage that is captivating and powerful. They turn heads with their polished sound and electric talent.

6/28 | Cousin Curtiss

Rootstomp

Featuring rapid fire guitar, incendiary harmonica and a thunderous kick, Cousin Curtiss left his teaching career in Alaska in pursuit of sharing his unique sound with the world. Since then, he has supported acts like The Bellamy Brothers, G. Love & Special Sauce, The Infamous Stringdusters and Pepper. Originally from Louisville, Kentucky, Trevor Michael blends his country roots with the indie-folk sound of Denver to create what he describes as “modern mountain folk with a hint of bluegrass.”

| Pandas & People

Alternative Rock

Local favorite band, Pandas & People uses a blend of organic instruments with upbeat pop sounds to rack up awards including earning “Best American Act” from Westword, twice, and topping the national Alternative music charts. On iHeart radio’s KTCL, the band achieved an “Audience Favorite” distinction and the No. 1 most requested song slot for consecutive weeks. Seth Beamer describes his style as “shameless alt indie.” With a mastery of instruments – piano, guitar, drums and bass – Seth was recently recognized as the 2022 winner of 93.3’s Hometown for the Holidays.

| Nosotros

Latin Groove

Nosotros has been one of the most recognizable Latin dance bands in the Southwest for over 20 years. They seamlessly combine Latin rhythms with elements of rock, salsa, jazz and cumbia. A review in Hyperactive Music Magazine stated their music is “not to be explained, it is to be felt in the pit of our souls.” Lakewood’s own, El Javi, incorporates elements of flamenco, progressive rock, classical, folk and many forms of world music to shape his unbound instrumental compositions.

7/19 | The Local Honeys Bluegrass

The Local Honeys’ carefully crafted vignettes of rural Kentucky soar above layers of deep grooves and rich tones, creating a nuanced, moody and deep-holler sound. They have not only become the defining sound of real-deal Kentucky music but are now poised to become some of the leading voices of a new Appalachia. Boulder-based acoustic quartet, Sturtz, falls somewhere at the intersection of folk and soul. Their music stands out for its distinctive, soothing instrumental and vocal harmonies.

7/26 | Chris Daniels & The Kings with Freddi Gowdy Blues

Chris Daniels & the Kings are celebrating their 39th year with live performances. They have produced 15 albums and joined forces with Freddi Gowdy of the Freddi Henchi Band. Both Chris and Freddi are Colorado Music Hall of Fame inductees and have been making music history for generations.

You might recognize Lauren Frihauf from Season 19 of NBC’s “The Voice.” This indie singer-songwriter’s sounds of folk and neo-soul are a stark contrast from the Colorado farm where she lives and creates.

SNEAK PEEK

Home to nearly 200 performances each year, the Lakewood Cultural Center is a regional hub for theater, music and arts . In addition to performances produced by Denver-area arts organizations, the LCC Presents series is uniquely curated and presented by the Cultural Center . This annual series has a long history of attracting world-class touring artists in dance, classical music, theater, world music, jazz and multidisciplinary performances .

Here is a sneak peek highlighting a few of the artists appearing in the 2023-2024 LCC Presents season. Stay tuned for the announcement of the full season lineup later this summer .

D’DAT—The DelberT AnDerson Trio

D’DAT is a multi-cultural band fusing Indigenous traditions with Native Southwest rhythms, jazz and groove. Diné (Navajo) trumpet artist Delbert Anderson connects traditional Diné spinning melodies with improvisational jazz language. The funk and Latin groove rhythms of drum set artist Nicholas Lucero integrates his Peruvian and Spanish culture into a modern style, while groove bassist Mike McCluhan connects and flows. Together, they create a cross-cultural collaboration that forms the experience of Hózhó (beauty and balance), integrating different identities, cultural backgrounds and traditions together in musical harmony.

KAT EDMONSON

Kat Edmonson is an award-winning songwriter and singer described by the New York Times as having “an equal foothold in jazz, cabaret and vintage cosmopolitanism pop.” Raised on the music and film of the early-to-mid 20th century, Kat is a rare artist who embodies the spirit of the past while remaining resolutely au courant. She performs original songs and familiar classics, interweaving humorous anecdotes, philosophical musings and her love of film with disarming candor and vulnerability. Her longtime band members’ keen and sensitive accompaniment allows Kat to freely veer off-script as she’s often inclined to do. She has been featured on Austin City Limits, Tiny Desk Concerts, A Prairie Home Companion, and The Tonight Show.

“ FAHRENHEIT 451 ”

Aquila Theatre returns to the Lakewood Cultural Center stage with its innovative interpretations of the classics for today’s audiences.

By diversifying the classics and expanding the canon, Aquila seeks to enhance the plurality of our perspectives. One of the foremost producers of classical theater in the United States, Aquila Theatre has been bringing audiences worldclass actors, captivating designs, innovative adaptations and impactful direction since 1991. Its residency in the 2023-2024 LCC Presents season will include public performances and a special student matinee.

There’s trouble in River City when a fasttalking salesman gets his heart stolen by the town librarian. By turns wicked, funny, warm, romantic and touching, “The Music Man” is family entertainment at its best. Meredith Willson’s sixtime, Tony Award-winning musical comedy is a family-friendly story to be shared with every generation.

The Queen’s Cartoonists Holiday Hurrah Yule

Keenly aware of all things holiday-oriented and completely ridiculous, musical ensemble The Queen’s Cartoonists have set out to find the best of the best (and best of the worst) holiday-related cartoons, films and jazz. Playing music from classic cartoons and contemporary animation synchronized with video projections of the original films, the band leads the audience through a world of virtuosic musicianship with multi-instrumental mayhem and comedy. Expect the unexpected from repertoire that includes the Golden Age of animation, cult cartoon classics, modern animation and elements of a musical circus!

Behind the scenes at the heritage, culture and arts facilities of Lakewood, the programming staff brings vast experience, unending creativity and a resolute passion for creating diverse, meaningful and engaging programs for patrons of all ages .

Bringing the Past Present

Steve Luebke

Heritage Lakewood Belmar Park

An internship in museum education brought Steve Luebke to manage school programs, overnight camps and field trips for the History Colorado Center and then to the museum programs specialist position at Heritage Lakewood Belmar Park.

At Heritage Lakewood since 2019, Steve facilitates ways to explore the dynamic history of the 20th century. An amazing team of instructors and volunteers creates programs centered around history and artistic expression, ranging from calligraphy to skateboard decoration. Youth camp programs introduce campers to a variety of activities, ranging from pickling vegetables to crafting board games.

The summer of 2023 is looking bright with topics such as “illumination” at our History Happy Hour, throwback entertainment at our Belmar Base Ball Bout and inspiring stories like that of local legends, the Beers Sisters, at our popular Historical Luncheon series. Get your hands dirty in a blacksmithing workshop and clean up again in a soapmaking class.

Lauren Hegge

Washington Heights Arts Center

With a top-notch pottery studio, an expanding collection of fibers classes, a selection of drawing and painting courses, and introductory workshops to advanced courses across an array of mediums, the Washington Heights Arts Center has a wide spectrum of programming to meet the interests of the creative community. Lauren Hegge, cultural programs and studio coordinator, strives to offer new techniques while staying true to

the core values of providing accessible and inviting programs. Her background coordinating offerings at the Denver Art Museum and teaching photography as an adjunct professor has contributed to her longevity of nearly five years with the City of Lakewood.

This summer, Washington Heights will offer a selection of new classes and workshops, including a workshop on painting pet portraits, a summery introduction to botanical printing on fabric and an expanded class on relief printmaking for beginners.

Nathalie Renfroe

Lakewood Cultural Center

At the Lakewood Cultural Center, art, dance, music, and theater classes from funk to classical ballet, fine art painting to theater, the humanities and culinary appeal to all ages. Nathalie Renfroe, cultural programs coordinator, continually seeks new trends and offerings across multiple arts disciplines to keep programming fresh. Nathalie has been coordinating classes, events, camps and school-oriented outreach programs for youth art and performing arts at the Cultural Center for the past nine years. She brings experience programming for the City of Austin, Texas, at the Dougherty Arts Center, and she also taught graphic design as an adjunct professor in San Antonio, Texas.

Summer camp season fills the Cultural Center with the sounds of children enjoying camps centered on printmaking and magic, duct tape art and more. Offerings for 2023 expand to Beat Making, Baking Bootcamp, Miniature Creations and Let’s Dance Funk!

The Museum Store, located inside the Visitor Center at Heritage Lakewood, is your one-stop shop for unique gifts, retro toys, handmade cards and more . The friendly faces behind the counter or helping you find the perfect gift belong to the store volunteers . This dedicated team updates merchandise displays, runs the pop-up shop for community events, and researches new product lines .

Meet Cassie Hawks

Volunteers like Cassie make the store experience special for our museum visitors. She applies experience from past retail management roles and her current position in the wholesale industry to her work in the store. Cassie is full of fun ideas to display merchandise and promote products on social media. Cassie has been a volunteer with the city for almost a year and has helped pour cider at Cider Days, sell concessions during the Belmar Base Ball Bout, and has recruited her wife for work with the historic collections! Volunteers like Cassie create a warm and welcoming space for visitors to shop and have fun.
