When you sign up for a class, we depend on your enrollment for a successful class; however, we understand that sometimes your plans may change. All credit/refund requests must be made at least three days prior to the start of a program. Refund requests will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis and may be subject to a $20 processing fee. Refunds can be added to your household account or issued via check or credit card; no cash refunds. Please allow three weeks to receive a refund. We reserve the right to cancel or combine classes; a full refund will be issued if we cancel a class. Your payment will be credited to your household account, and you will be notified to discuss your options.

WEATHER CANCELLATION POLICY

All weather-related cancellations will be made two hours prior to program start times. If a program has been canceled, the cancellation will remain in effect for the remainder of that day. Washington Heights Arts Center is a historic one-room schoolhouse transformed into a contemporary arts center, featuring a loom room, glaze room, wheel room, papermaking studio, jewelry studio and more. BEGINNING GUITAR

No previous guitar or music experience required. We revamped the guitar program this year to make it easier for you to get started or come back to playing guitar. In four weeks, you’ll learn to read sheet music and tablature, know all the important chords, learn how to finger-pick melodies, a little music theory, and play solo and ensemble pieces. You will need a playable acoustic guitar. All students must start at Level 1.

NATIVE AMERICAN FLUTE LEVEL 1

This evening class will provide an introduction to playing the Native American flute, an easy instrument that does not require the ability to read traditional sheet music. A PAINTED SILK SCARF

Learn the fine art of painting on silk. In this class you will design and paint on a white silk scarf blank using a brush and stamping. This is a glazing process where sodium carbonate is introduced at high temperature in a kiln. This creates soda vapors that land on pottery forming a glaze to create unique textured surface treatments. This firing is a variation of salt firing techniques developed in Europe in the 13th Century. Topics include creating work, surface approaches and placement in kiln for good results. SMOKE-FIRED POTTERY

Create unglazed burnished pottery for smoke firing. Forming methods will include coil building and wheel-throwing. Burnish pots using a polished stone in the traditional Pueblo Indian manner or by using terra sigillata.

Pots will be barrel-fired to create the all-over black surface typical of Pueblo pottery, or horsehair fired to create interesting patterns. All levels welcome. Students may choose to make additional pots for pit-firing workshop. A $25 fee will be collected at the first class for your initial clay supply, glazes, and firings.

A mixture of soda ash and water is introduced into the kiln near the end of the firing. 2. The cost of swimming lessons covers only the time of the lesson. If you want to swim before or after your lesson, you must pay a facility entrance fee.

3. Swim diapers are required for all non-toilet-trained lesson participants.

4. There are no credits, prorated classes, refunds or rescheduling of classes due to inclement weather or participant’s inability to attend all scheduled classes.

5. All refunds are subject to a $20 service fee.

DEEP WATER: Challenge Level 3-5 Deep water classes are no-impact classes designed for individuals looking for a new twist on the energizing workouts found in the shallow water. Led in cooler water pools, deep water classes use the resistance of the water, along with resistance equipment and intervals to provide a total body workout that reinforces core stability and posture. Music is sometimes played. Participants should be comfortable in 10-12 feet of water and be able to swim.

SHALLOW WATER: Challenge Level 2-4 Shallow water classes are moderate-impact classes designed for individuals looking for an energizing workout of higher intensity. Led in both warm and cooler water pools, each class uses the resistance of the water along with resistance equipment and structured intervals to provide a total body workout. Dance SEASON 3 & 4 INFORMATION Prerequisite for Season 4 classes will be to have been enrolled in Season 3 (classes exempted below). Students will be accepted up until the fourth meeting day of class during Season 3 only. Please note, we will not be able to prorate any classes.

Classes that are EXEMPT from a prerequisite: Creative Movement, Pre Hip Hop, Pre Tap, Pre Ballet I, Hula Hoop In Season 3 we will work on technique, dance vocabulary, flexibility, strength and preparing the body and mind for Season 4. In Season 4, the focus will be on musicality, interpretation, rhythm and choreography. The progressive nature of these two seasons is to help the dancer learn in a steady paced environment.

REQUIRED ATTIRE: Leotard and tights (girls), sweatpants/shorts and T-shirt (boys), athletic/ jazz pants and tank top (jazz and hip hop).

REQUIRED FOOTWEAR: Ballet slippers (leather, not satin or house; pink or white for girls, black for boys), tennis shoes, jazz shoes, tap shoes or bare feet depending on class (no flip flops, street shoes or socks)

This is an introduction to pointe, focus is on proper mechanics, strengthening, ballet pointe vocabulary and developing personal artistry and expression within the ballet aesthetic. The darkness of night provides a unique backdrop for a hiking adventure, so leave those flashlights at home and hone your night vision as a park naturalist guides you along the trails of Lakewood’s Bear Creek Lake Park and surrounding green spaces. Keep in mind each one will average an hour and a half of walking and observing. We will meet at the visitor center unless otherwise noted. Recreation and Inclusion Services for Everyone, or R.I.S.E., is the City of Lakewood’s therapeutic recreation program for individuals with disabilities. We offer a variety of activities such as bowling, dances, community outings, overnight trips, recreation skill-building classes, Special Olympics and Unified Sports, a summer day programs called Camp Paha and Paha Adults in Transition and much more. This introduction to the Olympic sport of Foil Fencing includes a history of fencing, weapons and basic fencing technique and strategy. We teach competition in a safe and fun environment. Participants will end the class with a tournament competing against their peers. The class is for beginners and those from other beginning classes who are interested in furthering their foil skills. KANGAROOS (AGES 18 MOS.-3)

This class gives children their first exposure to our structured gymnastics classes. Children will use assorted mats, low and high beams, rings, PreSchool bars, tumble trampoline, and more. The class ends with 10 minutes of free play/gym exploration and requires one parent/caregiver per child.

TINY TUMBLERS (AGES 2 ½-4)

This class introduces toddlers to the concepts of following directions and being in a class all on their own! Children enjoy jumping, rolling and learning pre-school level gymnastics skills.

LITTLE LEAPERS (AGES 4-5)

Children enjoy weekly themed activities, navigating gymnastics obstacle courses and continuing basic skill progressions. Children begin to develop strength and agility while learning the basics of gymnastics in a fun environment.

DROP-IN TOTS IN ACTION (AGES WALKING-6)

Enjoy playing on various pieces of gymnastics equipment, sliding, ball play and various gymnastics activities. This is a drop-in class (no registration). For gym safety and the enjoyment of everyone, there is a maximum capacity of 18 Tots per class. Trained staff will supervise and assist skills, but does not provide structured activities.

BRONZE FLIPS 1 (AGES 7-12)

This is our level 1 gymnastics class. In addition to perfecting basic skills, gymnast will work on increasing flexibility and strength. Additional skills will include round offs, back extension rolls, backbends, bridge kickovers, sole circle dismounts, and inversions. This level may require repeat sessions to accomplish development for the next level.

SILVER FLIPS (AGES 7-12)

This is our level two gymnastics class for students working on intermediate level skills. In addition to perfecting level 1 skills, gymnasts will work on round off connections, back walk overs, front hip circles, handstand pirouettes, and handstands/cartwheels on beam. Coach approval is required.

CARA GOLD STARS (AGES 7-18)

This class is designed for level 3 and up gymnasts who are exceptionally focused, strong, flexible and coordinated. Gymnasts will continue to develop skill progressions and learn CARA gymnastics routines for the 2018 CARA Gymnastics Season. Coach approval is required.

BOYS GYMNASTICS (AGES 4 1/2 -12)

These all-boys gymnastics classes will help build strength and improve agility. Boys learn basic tumbling skills and use gymnastics apparatus including rings, bars, and vault.
