LAKEWOOD HERITAGE, CULTURE & THE ARTS CLASSES Winter/Spring 2018 WELCOME! Lakewood’s Heritage, Culture & the Arts (HCA) Classes publication is dedicated to offering creative classes and exciting winter/spring camps and programs. We welcome your participation whether it’s a challenging new class or expanding your creative talents! ENROLLMENT DISCOUNTS! HCA offers several types of discounts, applied automatically upon registration. EARLY REGISTRATION To receive this discount, class registration must be completed at least seven days in advance of the first class date. CLASS REGISTRATION Online: Lakewood.org/Register By phone: 303.987.5436 (WH), 303.987.7845 (LCC), 303.987.7850 (LHC) In person: At any of our three HCA facilities listed below. SAVE YOUR CLASSES BY SIGNING UP EARLY! Sign up early to avoid class cancellations. Classes with low enrollment are generally canceled three days prior to the first meeting date. REFUND, CREDIT AND TRANSFER POLICY Patrons requesting refunds four or more days before the class start date will be charged a 15 percent processing fee. Refund requests within three days of start date will receive a 50 percent refund. No refunds are given once the class has started. Should we cancel a class, a full refund will be issued to your household account, and you will be notified to discuss options. We understand extenuating circumstances do arise and cancellations can be reviewed on a case by case basis. Refunds are issued via check or credit card; no cash refunds. Household credit may be used for any City of Lakewood program. No processing fees will be charged if you transfer to any other current class being offered; if there is a balance due, payment is required at time of transfer. If there is a credit due, it will be placed in your household account for future use.

CONTEMPORARY MOSAICS Instructor: Alina Deac Pelegrin This class will provide a good foundation of the knowledge and skills for the beginner to learn about mosaics as a fine art form and start creating mosaic artworks. The ever popular salsa is hot and sizzling! Brazilian samba is fun and lively. Bachata, originating in the Dominican Republic, is gaining tremendous popularity in the U.S. Latin body styling as well as partner techniques are taught. Love salsa? This season you can learn to dance salsa plus other popular Latin dance styles that are typically played at salsa clubs. INSTRUCTOR BIOS DAVE BARRY Dave is a Colorado native and has been a professional photographer since 1975. He has taught at numerous venues in Colorado including Front Range Community College, Colorado Photographic Art Center, Working with Artists and others. PAMELA BLISS Pamela has been weaving for more than 20 years and teaching locally for over 10 years. As a teacher, she is known for her sense of humor and warmth. One student said, “Pamela takes the fear out of learning something new.” LOAY BOGGESS Loay is a lifetime learner and artist conversant in multiple mediums including clay, weaving, bookbinding, printmaking, and photography. In 2001 she received a BFA from CU Denver. In 2007 Loay found her passion in mud and fire. She instructs the monthly wood firings at Washington Heights Art Center and runs Sunday open studios. MICHAEL BOWE Michael is a student of both functional and decorative ceramic work and has a special interest in low fire methods and techniques. Michael is a performing artist and writer who happily discovered a love for ceramic art in the not-too-distant past. MARCIA BRENOWITZ Marcia has worked in health care for three decades with adults who require long-term care services as a result of chronic disease or trauma. She leads a weekly drumming circle, which incorporates the native flute, and is a trained Remo Health Rhythms facilitator. She has enjoyed native flute education through Zion Canyon Native Flute School and a variety of workshops and hosts the local native flute circle. She enjoys sharing the shelf expression and creativity the native flute supports with others. TERESA CARSON Teresa has always had a natural affinity for the creation of all things art. At a very early age, she decided that she would be an art teacher. Teresa holds both bachelor’s and master’s of arts in education from the University of New Mexico. While her main emphasis is a specialization in ceramics, her minor is fine arts drawing. HOLLY CAUSEY Holly has been learning and teaching art, fiber arts, cooking, sewing, crafts and quilting for many years. She has a lot of fun to working with children because they love to explore their world and are so open to creativity.

KEVIN CRUZ LUCERO - KID CRUZ Introduced to dance at a young age and stuck with it through the years. Learned from multiple world champions and leaders of the hip-hop community. Now it’s a passion and my life. It has become my career to influence and inspire those around me especially the youth. At the same time preserving the true foundation of hip-hop culture. GAIL FIRMIN Gail mentors for the Developmental Disability Resource Center’s Art & Soul program, teaching art classes to disabled adults for over 10 years. She teaches drawing and watercolor classes for the City of Lakewood. She is active with the Lakewood Arts Council and a member of its co-op gallery, exhibiting her work in graphite, watercolor, pastels and mixed media. ASHLEY FULTON Ashley has a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Iowa. She has been teaching art in elementary schools for over 7 years. She has extraordinary passion for education and the arts. KRISTEE GRAHAM Kristee is an internationally collected fine art painter, sculptor and jewelry designer. Her work has been shown at various fairs and festivals throughout Colorado and in many wholesale and retail venues in the U.S. Kristee is now focusing her craft on inspiring young people to follow their creative dreams. JAN JANAS Jan has a degree in art education and has attended multiple universities to strengthen and diversify her art style. She has coauthored three silk painting books, appeared in many juried/ invitational art shows, and her work hangs in private/corporate collections. Jan has taught students in elementary school, high school and universities. JOY JENSEN After a lifetime of working with fiber, Joy has been weaving for over nine years and continues to love all of the possibilities that are presented through color, texture and pattern. There seems to be infinite opportunity to learn and create through weaving. As a teacher, Joy loves helping students develop their projects and see them through to completion and success!

INSTRUCTOR BIOS GARY JUGERT Gary is a lifelong Lakewood resident who plays piano, guitar, and way too much ukulele. He’s composed a number of musicals, is finishing his first symphony, wrote a couple of novels, founded the Rocky Mountain Ukulele Orchestra, likes cats, and works at Starbucks to pay bills.

RICHARD NAKATA Richard is an award-winning magician who has been practicing the art of magic for over 30 years. He was born in Toyko, Japan, but came to the United States when he was very young. Most of Richard’s childhood was spent growing up in Aurora. He is now a resident of Centennial.

DIANNE LOSASSO Dianne is a talented instructor, international performer and choreographer. She is the owner and manager of Dance Fusion International. She was a performing member of the renowned AVAZ International Dance Theater in Los Angeles and has appeared on TV and in instructional dance DVDs. She is a nationally known belly dance performer and instructor of 30 years. She is best known by her stage name, Dahlia.

NORBERT NAGEL Norbert has served as co-president of the Pastel Society of Colorado. Most of his work is done plein-air, working to capture the feeling of a landscape more than copying it. His background includes working with regional pastel artists and an academic background at Metropolitan State College of Denver and Colorado State University. He has won several awards for his plein aire paintings.

ISMAEL LOZANO Ismael “Izzy” is a Colorado native and has worked in the Denver Public School system for over 17 years at every grade level as well as the collegiate level at Metropolitan State University. He has taught for the Art Students League of Denver and has taught classes at the Smithsonian Latino Center in Washington, D.C. He has worked as an oil painter for over 22 years. His work currently hangs in collections as far east as Philadelphia, and he has shown as far west as Diablo Valley College in California.

CALI NASS Cali has been involved with dance since the age of three, and has a passion for teaching. She has studied many styles of dance and attended multiple studios that would include Maxine’s Studio of Dance, Metamorphosis, The Young Dance Academy, and Annita’s Dance Studio. She hopes to ignite a passionate spark in all of her students for the world of dance, along with self-confidence and self-expression.

JAMES MCLELLAN James has been working in ceramics for more than 18 years. Since receiving his BFA from Metropolitan State College of Denver, he has continued teaching and showing his work in Denver and out of state. James enjoys working in all of the ceramic arts and teaching beginners on the pottery wheel. JUDY MCCANN Judy’s work is a culmination of years of studying pottery and jewelry art forms. Her love of pottery led to her interest in metalsmithing. Judy is the founding member of “Painted with Fire Art Guild” at Washington Heights and is involved in many summer markets. RITA MOORE Rita has been an artist for over 40 years. She began as an artist/ graphics illustrator for the Boeing Company in Seattle. She is a private instructor and freelance artist as well as an instructor at Washington Heights teaching the art of painting on porcelain. She has a compassion for wildlife, animals and humans, which influences her art.

JAMES OVERSTREET James is currently located in Denver, Colorado, working as a fine artist. His main focus is oil painting, however he is accomplished in acrylic and watercolor. James works in other mediums as well, including ceramics, sculpture, drawing and photography. James obtained his bachelor of fine art degree at Rocky Mountain College of Art + Design in 2017. CHRISTINE O’DEA Christine has an education degree from the University of Maine and a fine arts degree from Metropolitan State College of Denver. She shows her ceramic/mixed media installations in local galleries. MARÍA CECILIA OLANO SARDI María’s first contact with dance is owed to Brazilian jazz where she acquired her first technical style and performed interpretation stage dancing both in theater and in television drama. She studied at the Martha Graham School where she worked with renowned choreographers and teachers including Martha Graham herself. She got her B.F.A. in dance at SUNY Purchase New York University. María was awarded her doctoral dissertation from Catholic University in Valencia, Spain in January 2016.

INSTRUCTOR BIOS BREANNE PARETS Breanne trained in Loveland at The Studio and the Mary Constantine-Nelson Dance Centre primarily in Ballet with over 15 years of experience. This will be Breanne’s first year as an instructor, as she has been assisting at the LCC for the past two years.

SCOTT RONZIO Scott has taught watercolor painting for more than thirteen years at Washington Heights Art Center, and continues to enjoy learning about art through interactions with students. His classroom lessons are structured to focus on developing the skills needed for painting successful artwork.

LAUREY PATTEN Laurey is a certified PMC jewelry artist, a potter, and a fiction writer who loves to teach. Her fascination with clay began while working as an archaeologist and site illustrator on medieval castle sites in England. Her work has been shown in Washington, D.C., Virginia and Colorado. In her “spare” time, Laurey enjoys painting, sketching, herbology, writing fantasy and just plain having fun.

JUDITH SCOTT Judith has an MFA from Denver University. For over 30 years she has been teaching various mediums. Currently she teaches at the Lakewood Cultural Center, the Denver Botanic Gardens and the Art Students League in Denver. She is a lifetime member of the Pastel Society of America, winning many awards over the years and is included in several art books.

ALINA DEAC PELEGRIN Alina has been an illustrator, painter and expressive sculptor over the last couple of decades. She turned her attention to mosaic fine arts with explorations in color and andamento, followed by advanced studies in application and cutting techniques. Her mosaics and illustrations have been exhibited in several shows on the West Coast and Colorado. Alina is a member of the Colorado Mosaic Artists Organization. SLAWA RADZISZEWSKA Slawa specializes in realistic portraiture, figure painting and other representational imagery. She works from live models or photos, using oils, pastels, charcoal or watercolor. Slawa believes that creating art will fulfill our potential and that in learning new skills, we always stretch ourselves beyond our limits. As a result, this process can bring joy not only to us, but to others as well. JESSICA RIGGS Jessica graduated from Colorado State University with a B.A. in dance and a B.S. in dietetics. During college she had the opportunity to work with many well-known choreographers and teachers. Her own choreography was selected on multiple occasions for showcase in the CSU Fall and Spring Dance Concerts as well as for adjudication in the 2007 American Dance Festival. JACKI ROBERTS My first encounter with clay was during my senior year at Golden High School where my art teacher, Millie Morgan, convinced me I should get my hands dirty. While I enjoy many mediums, from sketching, painting, metalsmithing, etc., somehow my passions for art seem to reemerge in clay. I enjoy throwing, hand building, sculpture, and monoprinting. My favorite undertakings are those which tell a story of times gone by.

TROY SEATÉ Troy continues to write everything from humor to the macabre, fiction, non-fiction, essays and memoirs. He is especially keen on transcending genre pigeonholing. His tales span the gulf from Horror Novel Review’s Best Short Fiction Award to Chicken Soup for the Soul. They may be told with realism or fantasy, bringing to life the most quirky of characters. Novels include Valley of Tears, Tears for the Departed, And the Heavens Wept, and Paranormal Liaisons. His story collections are Carnival of Nightmares, Midway of Fear, Sex in Bloom, and A Baker’s Dozen. JOSEPH SIKORA Joseph was trained in traditional woodcarving in Bavaria, Germany. He worked for 10 years as a freelance carver while in Bavaria and returned to the United States in 1991. He displays and sells his pieces at Sikora Woodcarving in Louisville. Joseph’s work includes traditional European style carving, religious and Celtic art, Southwestern art, and architectural and custom furniture carving. BOB SMITH A renowned artist and studio potter for more than 40 years, Bob started his career working in functional stoneware but quickly moved to low-fire work, especially raku. His current work reflects an increased interest in Terra sigillata and saggar firing, which has made a large impact on his work in scale, gesture and surface treatment. THERESE SPEARS Therese is a Black Belt Nia Instructor who has been teaching since 1998. She is an AFAA fitness professional that also teaches Zumba, Mat Pilates, Yoga and more. INSTRUCTOR BIOS RATHA SOK After picking up his first spray can at the age of 15, Ratha has devoted himself to expressing himself with this creative tool. A student at Metropolitan State College of Denver, majoring in business management and minoring in entrepreneurship, he owns his own clothing line while still creating artwork and murals. Ratha host workshops and teaches classes for youth and the community by showing them that graffiti is an art form and how it can be used in a positive way. ANNE VAN LEEUWEN Anne has been a hand papermaker for over 30 years and has taught paper making and cyanotype. She received her B.A. in design from UCLA. Her papermaking training includes work at Carriage House (Brookline, MA); Fabriano, Italy (paper’s first home in Europe); Taos Papermaking; and the International Association of Papermakers workshops in Italy and France. SUMI VON DASSOW Well-known as a potter, teacher and writer, Sumi has work that includes brightly glazed functional pieces, burnished and pitfired vessels and ceramic sculpture. She has exhibited and won awards in major national and local shows, including the Cherry Creek Arts Festival. She has written two books and produced a DVD, published numerous articles about pottery, and taught workshops across the country.

ROBIN WILTON Robin has earned a BFA with a concentration in weaving from CSU in Ft. Collins. She has been weaving for over 40 years. Known as “the Weaving Lady”, Robin specializes in doing programs about weaving and spinning to Denver metro area children in schools and at events. Robin has taught Inkle Weaving for shops and weaving guilds throughout the Front Range for many years. RUTHANN WOODS Ruthann has focused on painting landscapes in pastel since 2002. She won awards for her paintings in oil and pastel. She studied art, design and business in college. Color and design were her focus in quilting for 13 years. In pursuit of her interest in the field of art therapy she explored sculpture and ceramics. Ruthann combines her fascination with nature and her passion for color in painting landscapes. She has been teaching landscape pastel painting classes since 2009.

ARTIST HIGHLIGHT Alina Deac Pelegrin Mosaics tell the stories of the little treasures within as they blend together into works of love and art. They are “conversations” between the elements and the artist, where edges may be adjusted, but nothing is truly forced into place.
