Kelly Mansfield,
ARTIST PROFILE
a multi-media artist at Next Gallery in Lakewood’s 40 West Arts District, traces the beginning of her love of art back to childhood trips to the beach. “Early on I knew I loved materials, and I have that memory of playing in the sand and building things,” Mansfield shares. After graduating with a degree in psychology, art, and architecture, Mansfield began her career practicing art therapy with groups of children at the Mt. Saint Vincent Home. She later moved to Seattle to work with runaway teens, where she met a fourteen-yearold girl who changed her life. Mansfield laughs as she recalls the girl asking her “what have you always wanted to do with your life?” Mansfield, shocked, looked at her and said “this is what I want to do.” The girl replied “Really?” Mansfield speculates “she must have felt something…she changed everything for me.” Mansfield’s lifelong struggle has been fully embracing a career as an artist. Her decision to pursue a M.A in Fine Art from Regis University, and her current membership at the 40 West gallery Next, is part of finally fulfilling that dream. Mansfield discovered Next Gallery when presented with the opportunity to practice her thesis show there. The depth of the public’s engagement and discussion about her art convinced her to join the gallery as a member. Next gallery is a co-op of 19 artists of all ages and styles, and they “help each other push the boundaries, so we’re not doing the same thing for years and years.” Next began as a sister gallery to Pirate, located on the corner of 37th and Navajo. Since moving to the 40 West Art District in April, Next is rapidly developing their own independent identity, and maintaining “integrity through awareness of the contemporary art world, versus something that just sells in Colorado.” Next is also making strides in integrating themselves in the community; artists will represent the gallery at upcoming festivals, and Next will paint their first mural in accordance with 40 West this August. After a career as an art teacher, Mansfield also hopes to partner with local schools to showcase student art work, and to open up space in the gallery as an artistic outlet for the Colfax homeless community. In the course of her experimentation as an artist, Mansfield has explored many different media, sizes, and themes. Her thesis exhibit featured life-size cut-outs of the human figure, each with a hole in a part of the body to symbolize chakras. The exhibit explored the notion of holes as “open areas of possibility,” and generated many questions from the public. Many walking through the gallery were tempted to touch the hanging figures, something that unnerved Mansfield at first. But she overcame the fear when she spontaneously placed one of the figures outside of the gallery during the Women’s March and encouraged individuals to write and draw on it. The final result was “beautiful and very therapeutic…I think there’s this idea that art is the finished piece, but it’s not, it’s just the process.” After an exhibit comprised of four large-scale portraits of her female role models, Mansfield thought she could be a feminist artist. A pearl constellation from north, south, east, and west represented each of the women, Käthe Kollwitz, Georgia O’Keefe, Kiki Smith and Janine Antoni. But Mansfield realized that her art has always come from the bigger picture of connecting to the human experience. Mansfield’s last exhibit explored the meaning of hands in our world, through focusing on her great grandmother’s experiences as an immigrant. Mansfield cast her own hands doing what she envisioned her great grandmother’s hands would have done, from carrying a suitcase to stroking a pregnant belly. Mansfield’s upcoming exhibit with Next will further explore her family heritage, this time in giving tribute to her uncle’s lifetime of auto body work. She finds that connecting with family heritage is universal, because “we all have someone in our family that works with their hands. We all have that connection.” One woman who purchased one of Mansfield’s hand pieces felt compelled to share with its creator where she had hung the piece and how it related to her family. “Whenever people want to share their stories with me, it’s amazing” Mansfield says. Don’t miss Kelly Mansfield’s upcoming exhibit, opening this Labor Day weekend at Next, located at 6851 W.Colfax Ave, Lakewood. VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT
Sue Wolff, a 25-year volunteer for the City of Lakewood, recalled her favorite Lakewood
Cultural Center theater production with a hummed melody, snapping fingers and a wide smile. After a comical performance of a musical number from the show South Pacific, Sue overheard teenagers awestruck by the show. “I thought to myself, Yes! These are kids finally getting in touch with what was, and what still is.” Sue lives for such moments, and remarks that what makes the Lakewood community so special is that “age is irrelevant.” For 35 years, Sue worked as an elementary school teacher in Denver. After retiring from teaching, she went to work in Lakewood’s City Manager’s office, then jumped at the opportunity to give tours of the flora and fauna in Belmar Park to visitng adults and children. Her teaching instincts still intact, she visited various schools and nursing homes with trunk displays featuring local artifacts. At the same time, she began volunteering with Family Tree’s Women in Crisis, sitting in on hearings and supporting the women. Ever since she started teaching, Sue has valued the skill of mediation and tried to impart it to her students. Her love of the skill reached its crux when she and a friend started touring middle schools teaching the skill of mediation. They would simulate coversations in small groups, and when Sue would return to the school another day, students would run up and tell her “I practiced that with my brother last night!” Listening to someone say to the other “Wow, I didn’t know you felt that way” and shaking hands, maybe even hugging, were the most rewarding moments of Sue’s career. Sue is also a lifelong lover of music and theater, which is why Lakewood Cultural Center (LCC) is now like her second home. She not only buys season tickets, but volunteers regularly at the box office and as a greeter at LCC’s performances. She loves the positivity that her fellow volunteers bring to the job, as well as how upbeat the patrons are. “People just come out so happy…” Sue laughs, remembering shows with gleeful children crowding the stage and sold out productions full of proud parents and grandparents. Advocating for the importance of art and theater classes important to Sue because they show children what can be fun, and one never knows what might spark creativity in a child. Theater not only revitalizes the past, but presents her with new surprises, moments of “wow, I didn’t know that.” After 25 years as an audience member and witness to the empowering effect of theater on those of all ages, Sue has a unique and energized glow of her own, and a foot that is always tapping to a tune.

travel the world at lcc
Put your upcoming travel plans on hold, because Lakewood Cultural Center invites you to sit back and experience the artistic world in Lakewood. The 2017-2018 Lakewood Cultural Center Presents series is shaping up to be the best yet, welcoming thrilling international performers to our beloved 320-seat theater. Your artistic trip around the world begins Thursday, September 28 with Pascuala Ilabaca y Fauna, an accordion-wielding songstress from Chile. Her music is grounded in Chilean tradition, yet weaves in jazz, pop, rock and even East Indian influences creating a magical musical journey. Her enchanting band Fauna provides the perfect accompaniment for her rich vocals and joyful stage presence. Ilabaca y Fauna received a Pulsar award, Chile’s top music honor, in 2016 for their last album Rey Loj. To experience Ilbaca and her band is to feel as if you stumbled upon a celebration in one of Chile’s historic town plazas, full of color, movement, laughter and festivity. After visiting Chile with Pascuala Ilabaca y Fauna, you’re on to Scotland to treat yourself to the music of the Scottish Isles on Friday, October 13 with Julie Fowlis. She is returning by popular demand to Lakewood Cultural Center, presenting her signature Gaelic sound layered against the rich sounds of her exceptional ensemble. Fowlis is a multi-award 10 September - December 2017 | BRAVO LAKEWOOD

winning vocalist who was nominated for “Folk Singer of the Year” at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards in 2015, and sang at the opening ceremony of the Glasgow XX Commonwealth games to a TV audience of over one billion people. Fowlis might best be recognized for her contribution to the soundtrack of Disney PIXAR’s Academy Award®-winning film “Brave,” singing the heroine Merida’s songs “Touch the Sky” and “Into the Open Air.” Fowlis also serves as a cultural ambassador for Scotland, hosting a television show called “Port,” dedicated to highlighting traditional Scottish and Irish music and artists. A “quiet torchbearer for her native tradition,” Fowlis holds two degrees in music and culture, and continues to contribute research and academic projects on Highland and Gaelic culture. Spending an evening with Julie Fowlis and her rich, intoxicating voice, is to be completely immersed in another world - one that feels familiar and at the same completely unknown.

From foggy, dreamy Scotland we travel to experience the rich sights and fiery sounds of Spain with Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana on Saturday, March 17. Drawing from Flamenco’s rich history, this premier dance company presents Voces Del Sur, a trip into the mysterious land of Andalucia, the Southern region of Spain known as the “cradle of flamenco.” Through the historical voices, including Arabic, Gypsy and Sephardic Jewish influences, Flamenco Vivo’s dancers pay tribute to the unique culture that brought us this extraordinarily rich, vibrant dance tradition. Be prepared to be utterly transformed by the bright sights and sounds of Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana! The next, and final, stop on our cultural tour around the world is Colombia, where we meet the Edmar Castañeda Trio on April 20. Castañeda is a jazz harpist, known for his ability to elegantly layer traditional jaropo sounds with jazz riffs and cultural influences from Brazil and West Africa. NPR notes that his choice of influences is fascinating, but it’s “his technique [that] is the real astonishment. Castañeda juggles lead, rhythm and bass lines, using a variety of hard and soft string attacks to keep those voices distinct - all without giving up the groove.” Castañeda began playing harp at 13 before moving to New York City to study other forms of music and instruments, including jazz trumpet. To date, Castañeda has released three studio albums and continues Pascuala Ilabaca y Fauna to smash audiences’ preconceived notions about the harp and its capabilities. The Edmar Castañeda Trio will wrap up the 2017-2018 LCC Presents season in unforgettable fashion, leaving you inspired, in awe, and fully excited for what 2019 will bring. We hope you’ll join us on this artistic adventure by seeing some or all the shows we’ve highlighted here, or choosing another from the jam-packed season, such as Britain’s VOCES8, Keigwin + Company’s dance tribute to Leonard Bernstein or Akropolis Reed Quintet and their award-winning chamber sound. To learn more about our full season lineup, visit Lakewood.org/LCCPresents, give us a call at 303.987.7845, or stop by the box office at 470 S. Allison Parkway. Lakewood.org/Bravo

Celebrating 40 Years with The Lakewood Symphony Orchestra!
Congratulations to our friends at the Lakewood Symphony Orchestra (LSO), including Maestro Matthew Switzer and long-term members Mary Anne and Harvey Fleet, on their 40th anniversary of sharing exceptional orchestral music with the Lakewood community. LSO was founded in 1977 as the Columbine Chamber Orchestra. Over the ensuing years, the orchestra’s name changed a few times and is now known as the Lakewood Symphony Orchestra, proudly identifying with their home community and performance space, the Lakewood Cultural Center. Their 2017-2018 season is a “Musical Feast,” promising to satiate your musical appetite. Begin your musical day with a continental breakfast – music of the European Continent featuring the tasty and palate pleasing Dvorak’s 8th symphony. The feast continues throughout the season with a huge variety of musical “menu” options. All the details are at LakewoodSymphony.org. Interested in playing with LSO? They are always looking to expand the orchestra! Visit the “Join Us” section on their website for details. Lakewood Symphony Orchestra performs six concerts at Lakewood Cultural Center each year, with music ranging from the classics to pops to children and family shows. Additionally, they play an annual holiday concert with the Colorado Mormon Chorale. Please join us in celebrating the LSO’s great musical contribution to this community at one of their shows. Fall performance details are on pages 19 & 20, with additional season information at LakewoodSymphony.org.

Lakewood Looks Back: CIder days
Cider Days is celebrating its 42nd year in 2017! This annual fall harvest festival pays tribute to Lakewood’s rich agricultural history, dating back to the 1890s when farms and orchards thrived, and apple, cherry and strawberry stands spotted Colfax Avenue. Though Lakewood’s farming days grow more and more distant, Cider Days continues to draw new audiences alongside lifelong attendees such as Jerry, who is celebrating his 32nd year as a volunteer with Lakewood Heritage Center (LHC). Jerry proudly restores and maintains the antique tractors that are used each year during Cider Days, occasionally reuniting the tractors’ original owners with their beautiful pieces of history. Jerry told us that some of the former owners have been coming to Cider Days for 25 years, explaining that a restored tractor is like a “time machine that you can hear, start, feel and drive.” Each year, Jerry loves driving the tractors out of the barn for the first time, saying he likes them “the rustier the better.” He knows that these special machines remind people that history is still alive, even if it appears a little rough around the edges. Cider Days celebrates such a long and robust history because it is an integrated part of the community, allowing Lakewood residents to connect with their neighbors and local traditions, past and present. Many people who came to Cider Days as children now bring their own kids to the event, enjoying the memories as their children experience their first mule ride or taste of apple butter. While Cider Days is steeped in tradition, LHC staff works hard to add new and exciting events and attractions each year, keeping the festival fun and fresh. For many years, the antique tractor pull created that “special something” that brought people back year after year. Now attendees can enjoy the tractor pull, still a hugely popular attraction, then stop by Colorado’s largest hard cider tasting or try their skills on the climbing wall. Comments gathered from the community about why they love Cider Days include, “I love that all kids activities are included with the price of admission,” “I’ve come for 26 years and always look forward to Cider Days,” “It’s a Lakewood tradition,” and “It’s our favorite event of the year!” It takes a truly special community to support an event like Cider Days for 42 years, and each year as another early October weekend comes and goes, the staff and volunteers of Cider Days are thankful to be in Lakewood. 14 September - December 2017 | BRAVO LAKEWOOD
