What do you get when you cross
traditional jazz forms and fiery Balkan brass-band with Roma accordion wizardry and a little (or a lot!) New Orleans style funk and soul? You get Slavic Soul Party!, America’s No. 1 band for Balkansoul-gypsy-funk coming to the Lakewood Cultural Center on Friday, November 22. Bandleader and percussionist Matt Moran started out playing with traditional Greek and Macedonian groups that quickly put the kybosh on his instinct to throw in a funky backbeat. Following his whimsy, Moran founded Slavic Soul Party! (SSP!) in 1999. The nine-piece party

band’s longstanding residency at Barbès, one of Brooklyn’s coolest venues, is a hot ticket for music fans from around the globe. In over a decade of touring North America, Europe and beyond, SSP! has performed everywhere from Serbian schoolyards to prison courtyards, Turkish palaces to Russian baths, the Kennedy Center to Carnegie Hall to the Chicago Jazz Festival and from Amsterdam to Zimbabwe. “Anytime musicians study traditions deeply, and then free themselves to follow their own whims, it’s a beautiful thing. But when it comes to the brass band fusion of Slavic Soul Party! that’s
just the beginning. With razorsharp precision, juggernaut force, and a healthy dose of playfulness, these guys start out in overdrive and never let up,” says Banning Eyre, National Public Radio’s “All Things Considered.” Case in point, SSP!’s program at the Cultural Center will feature the band’s take on Duke Ellington’s “Far East Suite.” Inspired by a 1963 State Department “jazz diplomacy” tour that was cut short — Ellington and his band didn’t make it to the “Far East”— this iconic piece blends old and new, different and familiar and is the perfect launch-pad for SSP!’s brand of world music. Time Out New York calls it “a pretty

heavenly match” and The Wall Street Journal says “parts of SSP!’s reinterpretation sounds like a Bulgarian wedding, others like a gypsy jazz funeral in New Orleans. And yet … it all sounds like Duke Ellington.” These nine musicians pump the sounds of life through a Balkan brass filter, reimagining the traditional while making new music out of immigration, integration and ingenuity. Whether live, on TV or radio worldwide, this dynamic brass/percussion ensemble is recognized for superior virtuosity blended with a huge helping of spontaneous fun.
Canadian Brass 7:30 p.m.,Thursday, December 5 The world’s most famous brass group performs the greatest hits of the holiday season, from popular standards to new arrangements.

vernacular of using light, space and perception. Now that the conceptual and engineering phases are complete, we can move forward to fabrication and landscaping of the area. It’s been a pleasure working with the collaborative team at Demiurge to fabricate the sculptures and the City of Lakewood to help make this possible. LG: What does it mean to you, personally, to create the artwork that will bring your hometown together in celebration of Lakewood’s 50th Anniversary? CP: I grew up in a family of artists in Lakewood and love the idea of leaving a small mark in the city that helped me become the person I am today. I’m proud to call Lakewood my home. LG: What is your hope for the future of arts and culture in Lakewood? Or what do you hope younger generations will experience in the future of Lakewood arts and culture? CP: I think Lakewood has evolved in the arts a great deal since I was a kid but I think it has plenty of room to expand and become a leader in the arts in the Denver metro area. I am a former member of Pirate: Contemporary Art, a co-op that for many years lived in northwest Denver but recently moved to the 40 West Arts District in Lakewood in part because of UWZM IٺWZLIJTM ZMV\ 1 \PQVS Q\[ UW^M [I^ML \PM KW WX but also strengthened our local arts district. My hope is the district will continue to welcome and support the arts as development and prices increase in the future. I’d like to see Lakewood invest more in the arts and continue to build programs to make art accessible to all.
“Echoes and Reflections: Lakewood’s 50th Anniversary,” a large-scale installation of reflective metal sculptures by Collin Parson, will be installed at Addenbrooke Park.

A HALF-CENTURY OF TRANSFORMATION Lakewood, Colorado 1969–2019
A HALF-CENTURY OF TRANSFORMATION Lakewood, Colorado 1969-2019
In 1969, a group of residents led numerous neighborhoods to come together to form the City of Lakewood. A number of factors combined to support the incorporation including concern that Denver would annex the area, worry about a lack of sufficient law enforcement services for a growing area, and apprehension that a forced annexation by Denver would damage the high quality of education available in the schools in Jefferson County. Over the last fifty years, many changes and transitions have taken place, but one thing has remained constant—the residents’ pride in their city. This book is not a history book but rather a celebration of the city’s humble beginnings, the transformations that have carried it forward to today, and the culture and amenities that define Lakewood.
This special commemorative edition book details how the city grew, the vision the community established for the city, the abundant recreational and cultural amenities, and the business base that combine to support a consummate Colorado lifestyle. It honors our history, our traditions, our residents, our neighborhoods and our leaders. Lakewood is a special place, a community that, 50 years after incorporation, is just getting started. Purchase your book today for $34.95 at the Lakewood Heritage Center, Cultural Center, Washington Heights Arts Center or other Lakewood facilities. You can also prepay online at Lakewood.org/Emporium and pick up your copy at the 20th Century Emporium in the Heritage Center’s visitor center (books will not be mailed). CIDER DAYS ANNUAL EVENT
October 5 & 6 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Lakewood Heritage Center 801 S. Yarrow St. Traditions. It seems safe to say that an annual event now in its 44th year can be considered just that. From the start, Cider Days has provided meaningful experiences for every age. Although much has changed over the years, a few things remain the same: cider pressing, tractor pulling, saw mill demonstrations, vintage farm equipment and catching up with longtime friends. This year’s Cider Days event takes place on October 5 and 6 at the Lakewood Heritage Center. Highlights include the ever-popular tractor pull, horse drawn wagon rides, apple pie eating contests and, of course, plenty of apple products for sale and sample. Among features added in recent years are Apple Annie’s Baking Challenge, a straw bale maze and a hard cider tasting. Plan ahead, though — if you hope to participate in the hard cider tasting, a special ticket is required and space is limited. A variety of live entertainment and kids activities set the tone for a fun fall weekend spent with friends and family.

RECORDING LAKEWOOD’S HISTORY
SPEAKING OUT
Milk bottles from the Beers Sisters dairy
farm, a mid-century diner and the Ping-Pong table upon which Mayor Richey negotiated the city’s boundary — these are all part of Lakewood’s fascinating history.
How do we capture the unwritten stories connected to Lakewood’s historic structures and the objects in the museum collection? That’s where Lakewood Heritage Center staff and volunteers come in, armed with audio or video recorders, seeking to document recollections of daily rituals and unique perspectives that reveal the details of people’s lives in Lakewood during the 20th century. “First person accounts are really important. Actually hearing about the object from the person who used it or about the home they lived in adds an emotional impact,” said curator Katy Lewis. “We currently have about 300 oral histories and are scheduling more interviews. We don’t want these stories to be lost.” The Heritage Center is undertaking a multiyear project that includes transcribing and digitizing the interviews, a process that involves typing out transcripts and converting older cassette tapes to digital WAV formats. The goal is to make the recordings publicly accessible online and searchable by keywords to facilitate research. Over the years, people who have used the museum archives in their research include fiction and nonfiction writers, genealogists interested in learning about family members, residents curious about the history of their houses, and local retailers and restaurant franchises looking for historic photos and stories to display in their storefronts. A research hub, the Heritage Center offers appointments for in-depth study and a growing online archive at Lakewood.org/ HeritageCenter. Now, you can add your own story to the city’s history at the Lakewood Heritage Center. The new exhibition “Lakewood: A 20th Century Journey” includes a space to submit a written story. View the exhibition at 801 S. Yarrow St., Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., or Sunday noon to 4 p.m. Admission is free. The center is also interviewing residents to add recordings to its collection. If you have a story about what life was like in the 1900s in Lakewood, email CaiLew@Lakewood.org or call 303-987-7879.

From oral histories in the collection PEOPLE’S CHOICE
“Then the election came along in June of ’69, 1969. We were successful, and this was after four unsuccessful efforts, and we were celebrating in the old Jefferson County Bank Building at 15th Colfax and Wadsworth. And they had a party room in the back of the building, and we were sipping champagne, toasting our success for the incorporation, and somebody said, ‘There’s the Mayor,’ and pointed to me. And so, that’s how … it all started.” — James J. Richey, who became Lakewood’s first mayor.
DAIRY QUEENS
“They [the Beers sisters] had the cleanest milk at the time they were producing milk there, going into Denver. That was quite an operation. They was five old maids. None of them ever been married, and they run that dairy and they milked Photo courtesy of Walter Burdette Weare. by hand for years and then they had their own pasteurization deal.” — Oscar “Buck” Matthews, talking about his neighbors “down the road.”
HORSE SENSE
“I do remember another uncle of mine … He frequented Lane’s a lot. He’d ride his horse down there, and then, of course, it’d take him home after he’d had … oh, a bit too much.” — J. Alen Huitt, reminiscing about the popular Lakewood pub, Lane’s Tavern.
