A facility assessment of the Washington Heights Arts Center has been completed, and it provides recommendations for facility infrastructure improvements related to system updates and facility repairs. Care will be taken to maintain the historical and architectural accuracy of this facility, which was first constructed in the early 20th century as a schoolhouse. While disruptions to programming will be limited, some classes at this location might be affected and are subject to change or cancellation. All class registrants will be informed of any construction affecting class sessions, and accommodations and refunds will be made as needed. Customers can stay informed of exact closure dates by visiting Lakewood.org/WashingtonHeights or by calling Washington Heights Arts Center at 303.987.5436.

Welcome Lauren Hegge

I joined Lakewood’s Heritage, Culture and the Arts team in May and am excited to be the new coordinator for The Washington Heights Arts Center. I look forward to supporting the history and excellence already in place, while expanding our reach to a wider audience and exploring new creative ventures. My background includes a mixture of studio art instruction and museum programming, most recently as the Studio and Artist Programs Coordinator at the Denver Art Museum, overseeing artist-led programming and residencies. I hold an MFA in Studio Arts with an emphasis in analog photographic and printmaking practices. The Washington Heights Arts Center is undergoing some exciting facilities updates at the end of the year and I can’t wait to see what the future has in store for such a welcoming and vibrant fixture in the Lakewood artist community. I’m happy to now be part of this community and welcome you to come join the fun!

PUMPKIN CARVING WORKSHOP Instructor: Barry Brown Grab your best friend, spouse, or neighbor because you are invited to create a superb carved pumpkin under the guidance of a master pumpkin carver! This workshop is led by Barry Brown who has been featured on David Letterman, The Tonight Show, Good Morning America, and movies including Hocus Pocus. We begin with a fun carving demonstration as he shares tips and insider information that will give you confidence as you and your partner carve into an already pre-scooped pumpkin. While you are having fun and carving, Barry will come around and give personalized attention and advice. To top off the evening, pumpkins will be illuminated in our plaza for the Grand Lighting Ceremony and a spook-tacular photo opportunity. So don’t forget your cameras! All materials provided: Each “couple” receives one scooped-out, basketball-sized pumpkin, a pattern, and a mini-kit of Barry’s favorite carving tools. Patterns provided are so that they can be successfully carved by all levels of carvers. Don’t feel like sharing...grab an extra pumpkin for $25!
