Lakewood’s Heritage, Culture & the Arts (HCA) Classes publication is dedicated to offering creative classes and exciting summer camps and programs. We welcome your participation whether it’s a challenging new class or expanding your creative talents!

ENROLLMENT DISCOUNTS

HCA offers several types of discounts, applied automatically upon registration.

SUMMER 2019

CLASS REGISTRATION ONLINE: Lakewood.org/Register BY PHONE: 303.987.5436 (WH), 303.987.7845 (LCC), 303.987.7850 (LHC) IN PERSON: At any of the HCA facilities listed below.

EARLY REGISTRATION DISCOUNT

To receive this discount, class registration must be completed at least seven days in advance of the first class date.

SAVE YOUR CLASSES BY SIGNING UP EARLY!

Sign up early to avoid class cancellations. Classes with low enrollment are generally canceled three days prior to the first meeting date.

REFUND, CREDIT AND TRANSFER POLICY

Patrons requesting refunds four or more days before the class start date will receive a refund but will be charged a 15 percent processing fee. Patrons requesting a refund within three days of the start day will receive only a 50 percent refund, which accounts for the 15 percent processing fee. No processing fees will be charged for transfers to other current classes being offered. No refunds are given once the class has started. When the city has to cancel a class, a full refund will be issued to patron’s account with the city, and they will be notified to discussion options. Extenuating circumstances do arise, and cancellations can be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Refunds are issued via check or credit cards only; no cash refunds. Credits may be used for any City of Lakewood program. If there is a balance due after the credit is applied, payment is required at time of the transfer. If there is still credit remaining after the transfer, it will remain as a credit for future use with a city program.

Jessica Riggs is an active member of the metro Denver dance community. In addition to teaching many different dance classes at the Lakewood Cultural Center and Clements Community Center, she dances professionally with three local companies. Jessica founded Life/Art Dance Ensemble (LifeArtDance.org) in 2009 after realizing the need for accessible cultural experiences in affordable housing complexes. Now, 10 years later, Life/Art performs for seniors at over 15 different residences each year, usually alongside a professional musician. This outreach is just one aspect of Life/Art’s work. The company also produces two formal evening-length works, hosts a dance film festival and participates in several smaller collaborative performances each year. Most recently, Life/Art worked with Stratus Chamber Orchestra to “embody” the music for one of its season performances and also helped bring a diorama to life at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science’s “Night at the Museum.” Life/Art has also worked with breweries and wineries to bring dance to unusual and unexpected places and to engage with audiences that might not otherwise go see dance. Dance doesn’t have to be on a stage to be an effective art form that makes a statement or becomes a vehicle for change. In this same vein, Jessica is a dancer with Lost Walks Band, an artistic supergroup that consists of seven musicians, three dancers and several visual artists. The band’s focus is to utilize “gothic rock opera” to bring awareness and support to organizations such as the Rocky Mountain Wolf Project who support the reintroduction of the wolf to Colorado’s ecosystem. Jessica is also in her second year of dancing for Boulderbased Cindy Brandle Dance Company, a company that makes dance that is relevant to our current society and world as a whole. Additionally, Jessica volunteers as a writer for Presenting Denver, an organization with a mission to increase exposure and appreciation of dance as an art form in the Denver area. Jessica believes that anyone can and should dance, if that is their desire, and that it’s never too late to start!
