Debra Smith If you met Debra Smith today, you would never guess that back in the early 1980s she lost her ability to speak due to a head injury. She credits her total recovery to a series of Brain Gym sessions, which rewired her speech center and allowed her to talk again. After that she became a Brain Gym consultant and instructor and has spent her working life in private practice, helping anyone from children with learning disabilities to adults recovering from head injuries and strokes. Many skills can be rewired in the brain making learning or relearning much easier. Deb has been teaching Brain Gym for older adults at the Clements Center for about 12 years. Her classes are fun and helpful, and the program is ongoing. When you complete a series of eight classes, you can sign up for another series. As a bonus, Deb serves doughnuts and organic fruit, so come by for a treat and check out the class! Learn more on page 14. January – March 2020 | 13

A BRIEF HISTORY OF MUSICALS ON FILM From the early days of feature-length “talkie” movies, musicals have been an integral way of telling stories. This presentation will take you on a journey back in time to the 1930s when people looked to the entertainment industry to escape their worries; to the ‘40s when the nation flocked to the theaters for a fun and glamorous diversion; to the ‘50s when movie studios looked to the stage for inspiration; to the ‘60s when they returned to more original content; to the struggle of the ‘70s and ‘80s; and finally to the revival of the genre in the new century. Al Vigil I began carving at the Clements Center in 2008. I had been carving on my own since I was a Boy Scout, and during that time, I carved a piece titled “Neckerchief Slides,” which was featured in Boys’ Life magazine. I carved off and on but did not get serious until I joined the Clements Community Center, where I started taking a morning class once a week. Shortly after, my interest grew, and I was taking both morning and afternoon classes! I improved my skills because of the other accomplished carvers, and those individuals helped teach me skills I would have never learned carving on my own. With my new skills, I began helping newer carvers as they joined the classes. I have only been an “official” volunteer for one year, and I truly enjoy my new position. I depend on Rob Summers and other carvers to help with the new and experienced carvers, thereby allowing me to continue to spend a lot of time carving. Helping at the Clements Center has been a joy, and without it I feel I would have forever been a beginning carver. My carving has improved so much that my carved Santa Clauses are now sold at The Shop (A Christmas Store) in Santa Fe, New Mexico! I owe much of my success to the skills I learned at the Clements Center and look forward to continuing to help in any way I can. Lakewood.org/OlderAdults
