Transportation Services

INSTRUCTOR SPOTLIGHT

Thresa Arney grew up right here

in Lakewood, graduating from Green Mountain High School. She enlisted in the U.S. Navy for a four-year tour, then returned to Lakewood and became a federal employee. After 35 years of service, Thresa has enjoyed her reitrement!

Lakewood Rides offers door-through-door transportation to Lakewood’s residents who are 60 years old or older and persons with disabilities of any age. We provide transportation for medical and personal appointments, group and individual grocery shopping, employment and social trips. We also provide rides to the Clements Center for the many services offered: activities, classes and Volunteers of America dining. Destination points can be anywhere within Lakewood as well as east to University Boulevard, west to Golden proper, north to 49th Avenue and south to Quincy Avenue. All rides are scheduled upon availability on a firstcome, first-served basis. For questions, fares and to have information mailed to you, please call 303.987.4826 or email questions to LakewoodRides@Lakewood.org.

303.987.4820

Upon her retirement, Thresa had a neighbor, Mary Edgar, ask her to take a class to learn how to play Mah Jongg. Not knowing anything about it but loving to play any type of card or board game, Thresa agreed. Mah Jongg has become a very big part of her life, and after only a year and a half of learning, Thresa has become the instructor here at the Clements Center. Thresa states, “Mah Jongg is a fun game where you meet many other players that quickly become your friends. The Clements Center is a great place to learn to play the game. You will learn the National Mah Jongg League Rules, and we play for fun, not money.” The next class will begin in August. Upon completion of the class, you are welcome to join the drop-in game every Monday (except holidays) from 1 to 4 pm.

BEGINNING BELLY DANCE This ancient art form gained popularity in the 1960s and is still going strong. BALLROOM DANCE Learn the basics and beyond of two popular dances. The first four weeks will feature American tango and the second four weeks will feature night club two step. American-style tango evolved as a ballroom dance from the sultry Argentine tango danced in Buenos Aires in the early 20th century which was made popular in a 1921 Rudolf Valentino film. It features sharp movements and cat-like foot action. The music is in 4/4 time and has a marching rhythm. Nightclub two-step (NC2S) is a partner dance initially developed in the mid-1960s as a way of dancing to the popular slow ballads of the time. It can be danced to nearly one-third of all songs on the pop charts today. Roberta Garner When I was asked to be the spotlight for this issue of “Live the Life!,” my immediate response was, “Why me? I am only a small cog in the life of the Clements Center.” After further reflection, I realized that Clements Center affects the lives of many, many people, and I am one of those. This year, I became a Clements volunteer with the luncheon program provided by the Volunteers of America. Here I work with a fabulous team of other volunteers. I was surprised at all the myriad tasks required to serve lunch: wipe down tables, put out condiments, make coffee, wipe down the kitchen counters, wash the fresh fruit, check the temperature of the day’s food, wash your hands, put on gloves, prepare the plates, serve the food, and of course, after everyone has eaten, clean up. Truly it takes many hands to make light work of a big task. In addition to becoming a fan of snowshoeing and hiking, and learning the challenges of serving lunch, I have made several close friends. Because of the Clements Center, Lakewood has become my home. Now you know why I love this place, its welcoming staff, its varied activities and all who are smiling as they enter through its doors.
