Instructor Spotlight NELLY GILLESPIE Born and raised in the northeast coast of Venezuela where I had a wonderful career as a lawyer, I moved to the USA in the summer of 2000. After almost four years in Texas, I moved to Anchorage, Alaska, where I lived for 14 years before moving to Colorado in the summer of 2017. I have enjoyed working out all my life. But only when I moved to Texas did I decide to follow my true passion as a fitness instructor. I worked at Curves for Women. That was 2001 when I also discovered my passion: Zumba...and the rest is history. As of right now, I am licensed and have taught in different times Zumba fitness, Gold, Toning, Step, Aqua, Sentao, ProSkills and Strong by Zumba. I also am part of Beachbody Live Team and licensed to teach Piyo and Country Heat. I am a Pound Pro and a Group X Fitness Trainer. My latest addition is being a Flex Instructor so I can teach SilverSneakers.® I am in the process of getting certified as Personal Trainer. I presently teach Zumba Fitness, Zumba Toning, Zumba Gold, Aqua Zumba and SilverSneakers.® For me, teaching Zumba Gold is the highlight of my week. To be able to lead active adults into healthier and happier lives is a privilege; it is an honor, and I feel blessed about it. Also, it is the format I will always teach even when I only can do it from a wheelchair, if I live that long. Zumba Gold gives the students not only the fun of a Zumba party, but the opportunity to get more balance, flexibility, mobility, etc. It is a total satisfactory happy hour. It is the opportunity to bond in health and well-being. It really is a happy hour for everybody, and I am lucky enough to lead it!

Volunteer Spotlight CLEO BLACKWOOD I loved teaching second grade while living with my family in Kansas and later I volunteered in a kindergarten class for two years, for my daughter’s Brownie troop and in my grandson’s school. Our family made the decision to move from Kansas to Colorado in 1968 where for 15 years I worked for a government agency. In 2012 my dear husband passed away, and I decided to begin a new period of my life. My children and grandchildren were and still are a great comfort to me, and my friends, family and neighbors invite me for meals and events. I truly am blessed to have such wonderful people in my life. A couple of years ago I adopted my little housemate, Jake, a small but loving dog. Then my daughter and I began going to an exercise class twice a week at the Clements Center. It wasn’t long before I made several good friends and later began to volunteer twice a week, helping check people in for the Volunteers of America lunch site and assisting Jean, the VOA coordinator, in the management of reservations and paperwork. Though I have always loved being a volunteer and helping my family and friends, I know when you help others, you get what you put into it, and for me, I receive a lot more than that!

Adella Schulz

Creative writing class inspires Adella Schulz to publish her first book Adella Schulz became a published author at the age of 80. “I’ve always had a sense of wonder and an imagination,” said Adella, who has had a lifelong passion for storytelling. Having written her life story 12 years ago, she felt the need to become motivated again, so in 2016, she enrolled in a creative writing class at the Clements Center. With encouragement from her instructor, Troy Seate, she submitted one of her articles to a local newspaper for publication. “What a thrill it was to see it in print,” she said. A few weeks later, she began writing a novel. Her book, “Undocumented: A Young Man’s Quest for the American Dream,” begins in 1885 when her grandfather, Frank Lanc (pronounced Lance) left the coal mines of Bohemia, now part of the current-day Czech Republic, and stowed away on a ship to America at the age of 12. “My grandfather spoke little about his early life, fearing he might be sent back because he came without papers.” Adella’s internet research led her to documents at the Nebraska State Historical Society and the Butler County Library, where he settled. “All I had to work with were the facts I gathered and some family stories. Then I began to weave the story.” It’s an easy read, historical fiction that illustrates the resilience of people committed to building a better life. The benefits of writing offer reasons to give it a try: It keeps your mind active, and it inspires creativity and classroom camaraderie. “What you need most of all is courage. Do the best you can,” Adella advises. “When you’re reading and writing, you’re never alone.” Upcoming creative writing classes at the Clements Center begin in June.
