THREE VIEWS:
The Parson’s Creative Family Legacy
by Laine Godsey Arts programming curator
As the City of Lakewood begins its celebration of 50 years of incorporation, we recognize that it is the exceptional individuals within our community that make this city great. It’s difficult to quantify the impact that any one individual has on our sense of place, but for one Lakewood family their influence on our community can be measured by their creative legacy. The Parson family, Charles, Evalyn and their children Collin, Devon and Celia all exemplify a creative life fully lived. To arrive in front of the family’s home in north Lakewood is to happen upon an experience. Sculptures rise from the lawn; steel, marble and glass punctuate the lushly vegetated garden. There is art under every leaf and dotted along every step of the pathway to the door. Collin Parson recalls that as a child he could be identified as “the kid who lived in the art house.” Their home is warm and smells of cultivation and fresh coffee as Evalyn Kermiet Parson, a former modern dancer and member of the nationally recognized folk arts Ritchie Family, transplants seedlings into eggshells for her garden. Within their home there is a palpable buzz of “we make things here.” Charles and Evalyn talk about their children and grandchildren with pride and about the experience of being an artist and educator in a Colorado community. This seems exceptionally modest considering that Charles, who goes by Chuck, has more than 80 solo exhibitions and countless public art projects to his name and has exhibited his work widely internationally. Until Charles’ “retirement” in the summer of 2018, he was the senior chair of fine arts at the Community College of Denver and has been the recipient of numerous awards such

Collin Parson, Reflection Series
“...The distinctions of views of light and shadow, massive scale and delicateness, expansive space and airy atmosphere within our works address the connections of landscapes and passages of time.” as Denver Art Museum’s Alliance for Contemporary Art award and the Museum Art Educators of the Year award from the Colorado Art Education Association. Now, he says he has time to work on arts residencies, exhibitions with his sons and mentoring young artists. In Charles’ expansive garage/ warehouse studio, steel beams and industrial materials are softened by delicate drawings of mountains. Charles says, “Some people pray, some people meditate…I draw.” He is prolific; there is artwork that is grounded, physical, and yet transcendent everywhere in
his studio. He talks about his sons and the incredible work they do as artists, arts administrators and humans. It is easy to see how Charles and Evalyn, who made Lakewood their home in 1987, have inspired their three children to continue the family tradition of pursuing lives as parents, artists, educators, folk musicians, activists and champions of the arts in our community. Join us at the Lakewood Cultural Center for a free artists reception from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, January 18. The exhibition will be on view at the Cultural and Civic center galleries through March 28.
Charles Parson, from the Outside of Memory Series
Devon Parson, detail from the Rusted Landscape Series
Charles, Collin and Devon came together for the City of Lakewood’s inaugural 2019 50th Anniversary exhibition, titled “Three Views,” which celebrates their creative similarities and differences. The Parsons describe their artistic connection by saying, “With the common bonds of time and place, [our] separate visual vocabularies speak to the contemporary experience of living and raising a creative family in Lakewood, Colorado in the 21st century. The distinctions of views of light and shadow, massive scale and delicateness, expansive space and airy atmosphere within our works address the connections of landscapes and passages of time.”

Charles’ impact is evident in Collin’s use of light, geometric shape and the championing of local arts. Collin, whose work has appeared in frequent exhibitions and public art installations throughout the state, has received numerous awards including Westword’s 100 Colorado Creatives and numerous Best of Westword’s for both his creative and curatorial projects. As the current director of galleries and curator for the Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities, he focuses his curatorial practices on Colorado and celebrating exceptional local artists. Devon approaches the world of visual arts from a different perspective. His creative practice has evolved out of his extensive backcountry experiences, such
as working as a river guide on the Rio Grande River in the New Mexico desert, as a park ranger in the Sierra Nevadas and the red rock desert of southern Utah. All of this has led him to create artwork that has been recently exhibited in the Durango Arts Center Annual Invitational competition and a group exhibition at the Museum of Friends in Southeastern Colorado. What the Parson family has created reaches far beyond the borders of their artistic home, the gallery or a classroom. They have fostered across generations a spirit of inquisitiveness, joy in creating, celebration of family and community, and the desire to impact the lives of others through art. With the exhibition, “Three Views,” Charles, Collin and Devon say they hope to impart “contemplative moments of the universal themes represented by sunrise and sunsets; earth’s surfaces and forms; the West’s spaces and the individual’s sense of place in it.”

20182019 SEASON
Did you catch Beatlemania during the band’s first appearance on “The Ed Sullivan Show?” Did you meet your spouse at Red Rocks Amphitheatre on August 26, 1964, during the Beatles inaugural U.S. tour (or maybe you delivered the oxygen tanks the Fab Four required at the performance)? Perhaps your favorite childhood memories are like those of Billy McGuigan, remembering your dad playing Beatles songs so frequently that John, Paul, George and Ringo were like long-lost uncles.
Billy, Matthew and their brother Ryan front Yesterday and Today’s band that’s able to play all 200plus songs in the Beatles anthology on a moment’s notice. “But it’s not your typical request show. Along with a request, we ask for the reason behind it, and we chat a little with the person who made it, which makes the show interesting and interactive,” said Billy. “The most surprising element is the heart and personal connection that comes through each and every show.”
Billy — creator and producer of three national hit shows — and his brother Matthew developed “Yesterday and Today: The Interactive Beatles Experience” in memoriam of their father. The all-request show celebrates fans’ memories told through Beatles music, reminding audiences of the importance of family and the connection that music provides in everyone’s lives.
The band forgoes accents and wigs and emphasizes your requests instead. Your memories make up the narrative for the evening as the McGuigan brothers recreate the music, energy and spirit of the world’s most popular band.
What’s your favorite memory of the Beatles?
Share it at a live request concert!
Fill out your request card just prior to the show on April 12 or 13 and enjoy a one-of-a-kind experience with a setlist unique to your stories.
Get Back!
50 Years Ago in Music: The Beatles For nearly a third of 1969, the Beatles albums dominated the Billboard Charts No. 1 spot. Early in the year, fans were still swooning over the 1968 “The Beatles [White Album].” The band’s last album recorded, “Abbey Road,” followed suit in November and December. On June 24, 1969, the day that the City of Lakewood was incorporated, “Get Back” by the Beatles with Billy Preston was in its fifth week as No. 1 on the Hot 100 Billboard Chart. The song was born during a period when the Beatles were trying to return to their roots as a live rock ‘n’ roll band.

Lakewood Looks Back 40,000.
That is the number of historical objects held in the public trust at the Lakewood Heritage Center.
by Katy Lewis Lakewood Heritage Center museum curator
These physical manifestations of our collective history describe past experiences and the progression to our experiences today.
These 20th century books, postcards, archives, photographs, clothing, accessories, farm implements, household items and appliances, business equipment, furniture and much more have been donated over the past 40 years by interested and generous Lakewood and Denver metro area residents. About 5 percent of these artifacts are on display at any one time to, for example, tell the story of the Streer dairy farming family or the Gomez beauty salon and barbershop. The museum showcases these pieces to tell the everevolving story of human life: the evolution of technology, the transformation of transportation and the alteration of the landscape.
14 January-April 2019 | BRAVO LAKEWOOD
Lakewood Heritage Center wants to ensure that more of these artifacts can be seen and researched by the community we serve. Each week, members of the public inquire about historic house photographs, midcentury toys, or West Colfax motel postcards. They are searching for information to create exhibits, photographs to include in presentations, or evidence of an ancestor living in Lakewood. We want to accommodate these researchers better. The first step, which has been in process for the past five years, is to fully document the museum’s permanent collection of objects. This process includes describing, measuring, conditionreporting and photographing or scanning all two- and three-dimensional artifacts. Approximately half of the collection has reached this point!
The next step is to create a space where these artifacts will be accessible to the public if coming to our site is inconvenient or impossible. Enter the project “50 Objects for Lakewood’s 50th Anniversary.” A committee, led by Collections Assistant Jacey Bonavia, has been charged with choosing 50 objects from the permanent collection to make accessible online. These items are significant to Lakewood history and relate to the museum’s interpretive themes such as agriculture, commercial growth, community culture, the Denver Federal Center, education, health and wellness, incorporation of Lakewood as a city, transportation and water.
