I’M BORED!
If you are a parent, I am sure you have heard those words before. Did you know Lee’s Summit Parks and Recreation has something for Every Age, Every Season? With 32 parks, three community centers, one aquatic center, two splash pads, an amphitheater, multiple acres of green space and, opening this winter, our outdoor ice rink, “Summit Ice”; one can always find something to do no matter the time of year. Lee’s Summit Parks and Recreation recently opened their second Splash Pad in May located at Lea McKeighan Park, at the north side, which is a great compliment to our first Splash Pad at Miller J Fields. There are also free outdoor water activities at Legacy Park lake including paddleboarding, canoeing and fishing. Also, through a generous sponsorship, residents can check out bikes at no cost and ride through the park. Legacy Park is also home to an 18 hole disc golf course, an all-inclusive playground and five miles of walking and biking trails. The Legacy Park Amphitheater hosts four ticketed events as well as ten free events throughout this season, including kids cultural arts programs, music concerts and movie nights. If you like hiking through the woods or along a creek bed, check out Winterset nature area located inside Hartman Park. On a windy day, grab your kite and hit Osage Trails for great open space. If you’re into butterflies, check out our children’s Memorial butterfly garden and sculptures located in Lowenstein Park. How about getting in a workout on outdoor fitness equipment or playing bocce ball, ping-pong or billiards? All of those free amenities are available at Gamber Community Center. Just visit the front desk to get a key fob. There’s always plenty to do at Lee’s Summit Parks and Recreation for Every Age, Every Season and for everyone in your family to enjoy. We hope to see you soon at one of our parks, facilities or events.

LETTER from the
ADMINISTRATOR Like many of you, as a parent I have heard the all too familiar words, “Dad, I’m bored.” This topic of boredom is one that a staff member suggested might be a good article for the Illustrated. I couldn’t agree more, so I asked her to put some thoughts together. We focused on some of the unique, free and low cost options we provide which you can read about on page 2. Speaking of unique experiences, you may want to consider spending the afternoon with your family at Sylvia Bailey Park enjoying Fall Fun Days. Fall Fun Days runs throughout the month of October and you can enjoy great activities like our 5-acre corn maze, the hay mountain and slide, farm games, and our very popular corn box. We also offer special events like Flashlight Fridays and a Haunted Corn Maze. For more information on Sylvia Baily Park turn to page 4. I’m sure you know by now that Lea McKeighan Park opened in late May and has been a popular destination for adventure play, water play, and pickleball. However, I’ve been asked one question the most: “When will the ice rink open?” I’m excited to share that in mid-October we will transition the pickleball courts to our outdoor ice rink, which we have named Summit Ice. This will be our inaugural season and we will work with KC Ice, our management company, to provide extensive programming, rentals and open skate opportunities. We are very excited to add this new addition and programming to our park offerings. For your convenience, we provided some initial information on the back cover. Although we are mid-way through the summer, you can continue to enjoy several cultural art events at Legacy Park Amphitheater. These events include five free events and three ticketed events featuring illusionist Andy Gross, Petty TheftKC & Journeyman (Tom Petty & Eric Clapton tribute bands), and the Legacy of Legends concert featuring Shooter Jennings and Ben Haggard, which will conclude our season in September. For more LPA information turn to page 13 or visit RockTheAmp.net. Finally, I would like to thank each and every one of our staff for their dedication, passion, and commitment to making LSPR great. As we prepare each issue of the Illustrated, I’m always impressed with the amazing facilities, parks, programs, and special events we make available for our community. “Every Age, Every Season” is our motto, and one we take great pride providing to you and your family each day. I’m fortunate to be surrounded by talented and inspiring staff that make Lee’s Summit a great place to play! Enjoy your parks system!

Now Open!
Lea McKeighan Park “Every Age, Every Season” Lea McKeighan Park opened this summer and continues to be a hub for activity since day one. Renovations include the following: a new splash pad, low ropes adventure playground, musical instruments, multi-use trail, additions to the skate park, pickleball courts, concessions building, restrooms, and, of course, the ice rink which will open this winter. The features maintain a similar look and feel to those found on the southern part of the park across Chipman road. These include such finishes as Craftsman picnic shelters and trellises, limestone, and creative storm water retention techniques. There are 180 parking spots and increased lighting to welcome park-goers. The park is open every day of the year and has amenities for all ages and sizes. During the warmer months, there is free access to the splash pad, the pickleball courts (balls and paddles are available for rent), 16
trails around the facility, sand volleyball courts on the west end and new additions to the skate park. There are also concessions operated by KCIce Management company if you need to cool down indoors and grab a snack. During the winter months, the pickleball courts will transform into the 8,000 squarefoot ice rink. Skates will be available to rent. The park renovation is a great success and will serve our community very well for years to come. We encourage you to stop by, get wet in the splash pad, play some pickleball, test your balance, strength, and coordination on the low ropes course, or play a melody on the musical instruments. You won’t be disappointed. For shelter rentals call 816-969-1560. You can also rent in person at the facility. ¢

Type 2 Diabetes: How You Can Control Your Risk
Jay Patel, DO - Family Health Specialists of Lee’s Summit. Dr. Patel is affiliated with Lee’s Summit Medical Center – a part of HCA Midwest Health, Kansas City’s largest healthcare provider Nearly 26 million Americans have diabetes, a metabolic disorder that results in too much glucose (sugar) in your blood. While some risk factors can’t be controlled (e.g., your family history, age and ethnicity) you can control most other diabetes risk factors. Let’s look at some common risk factors, and ways to control your risk. Are You a Couch Potato? A sedentary lifestyle is one of the biggest diabetes risk factors. Recent studies link too much sitting—whether at your desk at work or on the couch in front of the TV—with higher diabetes risk. Getting regular exercise may be one of the most important things to do to prevent diabetes. Why is activity so good? Regular exercise takes glucose out of your bloodstream and sends it to your muscles, where it’s burned up as energy. That helps keep your blood sugar level steady. Too Much Belly Fat Skyrocketing rates of diabetes are directly linked to America’s burgeoning waistline. It’s not clear why being overweight boosts diabetes risk, but experts suspect extra pounds—especially belly fat— make body cells resist the hormone insulin, which carries glucose in the blood to cells to use as energy. When you develop insulin resistance, cells can’t take up the glucose, resulting in high blood sugar levels. Not Getting Enough Sleep Skimping on sleep causes your body to secrete extra stress hormones that lead to insulin resistance and weight gain. People who don’t sleep enough at night are also hungrier because they have more ghrelin, a hormone that make you eat more. Aim for 7 to 8 hours of sleep every night. If your partner says you snore, and you don’t wake up refreshed, see your doctor. You may have sleep apnea, a breathing disorder during sleep that can boost your diabetes risk. Maintaining a Bad Diet For many people, a bad diet boosts their diabetes odds. Most Americans eat few fruits and vegetables, which puts them at risk for many health problems, including diabetes. Of particular benefit are leafy greens, such as spinach, kale, and collard greens. One analysis found that eating slightly more than one serving of leafy greens a day (about 1 cup raw greens) can lower diabetes risk by 14 percent. In addition, substituting water for sugary drinks can help lower your risk of diabetes. Living with Stress Managing a busy to-do list and crazy work hours isn’t just stressful, it also increases diabetes risk. Chronic stress causes your body to release extra stress hormones, such as cortisol. In turn, that causes insulin resistance, which makes blood sugar levels climb. Manage stress with relaxation techniques, such as yoga and meditation. Spend time with friends or enjoy a nightly sitcom for some laughter.

Knowledge is power, which is why regular screenings are so important. Visit your primary care physician on a regular basis to keep track of key health factors such as blood pressure and blood sugar levels. Your doctor can identify if you are at risk for diabetes and work with you on a plan to make any necessary changes to prevent or reverse the disease. If you don’t have a primary care provider, visit MyMidwestPhysician.com to find a list of physicians near you. CAPRA Accredited
The Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA) administers a rigorous program based on self-assessment and peer review using national standards of best practice to better promote the quality of agency services and delivery systems. LSPR was initially accredited in 2003, re-accredited in 2008, and again in 2013. Only five Missouri agencies have achieved this standard of compliance (Chesterfield, Clayton, Kansas City, and Lee's Summit), and 153 nationally.
FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE In order for LSPR to ensure all residents have an opportunity to enjoy the benefits of the many programs offered, a special work program has been developed. The Work Program offers a trade in service hours to the department for financial assistance to participate in programs and activities. If circumstances prevent a patron from participating in the Work Program, a request can be made to utilize funding from the Angel Program, which is made possible through private donations and grants. Call 816-969-1500 or visit any of our locations for more information. INCLUSIVE STATEMENT LSPR provides recreation programs which are open to all residents in the city and seeks and supports participation by all citizens with a variety of interests and abilities. If you or a family member needs accommodations or support to participate in LSPR programs, please contact us during the enrollment process. WHY KEY FOBS? For your convenience! The Key FOB is easy to carry with you, as it slides onto your key ring. In addition, the Key FOB allows LSPR to better track attendance, to know who is using the facilities and saves time when registering for programs or swiping in at facilities. Stop by anytime to pick up your free Key FOB at any of our facilities so you can start carrying your Key to Fun! Replacement FOBs are $1. SAY, “CHEESE!” LSPR staff may take photos of activities. These photos may be used in future issues of Illustrated, on the website, social media pages, brochures, articles, ads, etc. Thanks for saying cheese! Camera Policy: No person shall use a camera, cell phone, or PDA in any changing room or washroom in LSPR facilities. Please report any actions to the contrary. USE OF DRONES IN PARKS The operation of radio-controlled motorized aircraft in a park within LSPR jurisdiction is not permitted without prior approval from the Lee’s Summit Parks and Recreation Department. Permission to use a radio controlled motorized aircraft may be granted on a case by case basis if request demonstrates a specific public need for the radio controlled motorized aircraft usage and does not constitute an infringement on the public’s use of the parks, a danger to patrons within the parks, or violates park user privacy. The operator of the aircraft will be expected to follow all FAA guidelines including contacting the Lee’s Summit airport. LSPR is committed to providing a safe environment for patrons who choose to enjoy the park system.
