2019ANNUAL REPORT
City of Lee's Summit Police Department | 2019 ANNUAL REPORT
MESSAGE FROM THE
Chief
This past year highlighted the remarkable relationship between the residents of Lee’s Summit and law enforcement, as we worked together to keep our community safe. Crime reduction can only be maximized with a committed community and a police department dedicated to service. Our efforts are focused on building a police department our residents are proud of and enjoy partnering with to make Lee’s Summit a great place to live. Support for public safety was demonstrated by the passage of recent no-tax-increase bond issues, including a 2019 bond question to fund law enforcement projects. We are in the final implementation stages of a new digital radio system that will connect our police and fire departments with the regional radio network. The system will be operational in early 2020. The 2019 no-tax-increase bond issue, along with a federal grant, will support the installation of new in-car video systems, integrated with body cameras for every police officer. A project is also underway to renovate police headquarters to meet modern safety and workplace standards. Technology and equipment have become essential to effective policing, but the quality and professionalism of our department is based upon the great work of our employees. James Brock was selected as our police officer of the year based upon his dedicated work to improving department operations through advancements in technology. Dennis Patterson is the civilian employee of the year. Dennis has demonstrated a commitment to service in helping to maintain our police facilities. We continue to add new members to our team through a detailed, rigorous selection process. Our training program focuses upon meeting and exceeding Missouri and national standards. Officers are educated in topics such as defensive tactics, firearms, bias free policing, deescalation, criminal investigations, legal updates and more. Ensuring a safe Lee’s Summit involves preparing for the future. The police department continues to evaluate staffing on an annual basis. Plans for improving services to Lee’s Summit include a mental health co-responder position to specialize in real-time response to service calls involving individuals in crisis. Our Crime Reduction Team, composed of three officers and a sergeant, proactively works to improve safety in neighborhoods and business districts. There is a desire to add a second team in order to provide this service seven days a week. We are also conducting a public safety communications study to determine if additional resources are needed in police and fire dispatch centers. The department is dedicated to celebrating the growing diversity of Lee’s Summit by building relationships with our residents and actively recruiting a workforce that reflects our residents. We remain dedicated to looking at how we can best prepare for our community’s future. I am truly blessed to not only work in Lee’s Summit but live here as well. Friendly neighbors, great government services, wonderful schools, terrific parks and public amenities are all important to our hometown. Let’s continue to work together to keep our City safe!
Yours Truly,
