LETTER FROM THE ADMINISTRATOR Last year at this time I wrote a letter for the Illustrated entitled The Benefits Are Endless. That message then is even more timely now. So with some fine tuning I am reiterating that message. I hope you to still find it as relevant and important as I do. BENEFITS. The past several years LSPR has been involved with a Did You Know Campaign to share the benefits that are derived from investments in our parks and recreation system. As a part of that campaign we seek to enlist Friends of the Parks that we can share information, coupons and special events for them and their families. We currently have over 6,000 Friends and we want you and your family to be part of this group too. SO WHAT ARE THESE BENEFITS? We have identified over 420 of these metric based benefits. Here are few of them... ...each summer LSPR hires 400 young adults for a combined payroll of over $500K which comes from the fees charged for the areas they work. …an average house that sells for $150K would sell for 10 to 20% more if located near a safe well maintained park like recently renovated Miller J. Fields Park featuring a Splash Pad, new playground and shelters. In this case, with 2,000 houses in the area, using a $150,000 home value and an average increase of 10% in value, that equals a total value increase of $30,000,000 for the area. …the total cost to incarcerate a juvenile offender for 1 year is $71K. With that money, LSPR could employ 5 part time staff at Legacy Park Community Center (LPCC), provide 100 youth passes to Summit Waves & 100 fitness memberships annually. …Fitness programs like RevUp and others offered at LPCC and the Gamber Community Center reduce healthcare costs by as much as 55%. …LPCC represents a $10M capital investment in LS, generates $1.6M annually in revenues covering all operating expenses, employs 8 full time and 50 part time staff and serves over 320K people per year.

THE BENEFITS ARE ENDLESS, BUT WE NEED TO “KEEP THE LINE MOVING”! The work on getting ready for our next visionary task force has begun. Now is the time to revise and renew our commitment to the future of parks and recreation in Lee’s Summit. I hope you will join us in this exciting process as it begins anew and help us plot the future that will become our reality.
