enjoying here in Lee's Summit! In spite of the heat and humidity, LSPR staff has provided lots of fun family events—the Summer Concert Series (Folk Fest in June, Jamaican Jam in July, and Blues Fest coming up in August), the Night Flight 5K (which concluded with a nighttime dip in the pool at Summit Waves), the 15th annual Tour de Lakes bike ride, as well as the Tate Stevens concert back in May plus a few Movies-in-the-Park at the brand new Legacy Park Amphitheater—just to name a few. I could go on! Suffice it to say, we have much to be grateful for here in the beautiful town of Lee's Summit, and LSPR is honored to work toward the health & wellness of our patrons. So thank you for participating and making Lee's Summit what it is: a great place to live, work, and play. It wouldn't be the same without you!

Lee’s Summit’s Legacy for Parks Foundation

The Legacy for Parks Foundation enhances the quality of life for the people of Lee’s Summit through the stewardship of resources to develop, improve and preserve Lee’s Summit Parks & Recreation and is a volunteer driven, 501(c)3 non-profit organization.

Lee’s Summit is home to an award winning parks and recreation department. In addition to providing healthful youth and adult recreation programming, preservation of precious open space is especially important for a city that loses over 100-acres of open space each year to development. The Foundation provides additional resources to leverage taxes, fees, and grants to enhance parks and recreation services. n

Legacy Park Amphitheater

GRAND OPENING

Lee’s Summit Parks & Recreation pulled out all the stops hosting a free event for the entire community on

May 20 with the Grand Opening of Legacy Park Amphitheater. The evening themed “Celebration of the Arts” was just that. Former Lee’s Summit Arts Council member and long-time park supporter Brad Cox emceeing the evening kicked it off. Members of the Lee’s Summit Park Board as well as Mayor Randy Rhoads and City Councilmembers helped cut the ribbon on the stage to allow the festivities to begin.

Mindy’s Dance Studio started the show with over 100 dancers performing. Mindy Kerr worked tirelessly to put together all the routines, which included a performance by beginner dancers and their dads. School of Rock, led by Patrick Redd had the Amphitheater rocking. His group of young musicians played classic rock on guitars & drums along with vocals. Ben Martin coordinated the Summit Theater Group performers. They did numbers from both The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee and their summer musical, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, which will be performed August 12-14 at the Amphitheater. Patrons also enjoyed the voices of two choral groups —Kansas City Chorus of Sweet Adelines with the help of Carol Schumacher and Men of Note, directed by Larry Keisker—who performed a variety of patriotic 16 Lee’s Summit Parks & Recreation • LSPARKS.NET favorites.

The stage performances concluded with Russ Berlin conducting the Lee’s Summit Symphony. The symphony played a number of favorite tunes including some of the western numbers from their Family Pops Concert. On the plaza area attendees were able to view works of art from R7 students as well as Got Art Gallery students. Two local artists, photographer Jim Ware & painter Tina Garrett had their works on display. Tina had a live model in her booth and was painting a portrait in front of anyone who wanted to see how a masterpiece is created. The evening concluded with a 10-minute firework display, compliments of Wald & Company Fireworks. Lee’s Summit Parks & Recreation Administrator Tom Lovell said, “This is a great way to launch our season each year, celebrating our local artists both young and old. Especially this year, opening Lee’s Summit’s Legacy Park Amphitheater.” n

A study completed by Americans For the Arts determined that a cultural event attendee will spend $24 per person in addition to the event ticket price. The new Legacy Park Amphitheater will host cultural events serving thousands of people and generate significant economic activity for our community.

The popularity of LSPR's Free Summer Concerts in Downtown LS attracts people from all over the KC Metro generating as much as $150,000 annually in additional revenue at local establishments. We expect the Legacy Park Amphitheater will generate even more economic activity in our area!

70% of Lee’s Summit residents feel that “creating shared experiences that family and friends can bond over” is a major reason to participate in outdoor recreation.

Legacy Park Amphitheater can accommodate 3,500 people for a cultural event or activity and is available for rentals of all sizes!
