VISION 2030: COMMUNITY GARDENS

VISION 2020: COMMUNITY ORCHESTRA

VISION 2020: RAIN TO RECREATION

CREATE A VISION FOR THE FUTURE OF LENEXA What kind of city do we want Lenexa be in 2040? Over the next year, a team of community stakeholders will be exploring that question through Vision 2040, a strategic planning process that will help guide our community's progress through the coming decades. And you can be a part of this historic process! A HISTORY OF SUCCESS Lenexa has a proven history of taking the concepts dreamed up in our community visioning processes and making them a reality. Take a look at the final reports from Vision 2020 and Vision 2030 and you may be surprised by how many of these ideas have come to fruition. The concepts for City Center, Lenexa's nationally-recognized Rain to Recreation stormwater management

program and the Lenexa Community Orchestra were born out of Vision 2020. From Vision 2030 came ideas for our community gardens, the Lenexa Rec Center and the ongoing expansion of our multiuse trail system. As we continue to pursue goals set forth by these visioning efforts, it's time to look even further into the future to craft a thoughtful, progressive course for the Lenexa of 2040. GET INVOLVED There are several ways you can get involved in the Vision 2040 planning process. Give feedback on issues to be explored. Help us decide what bigpicture topics should be examined by providing feedback through our website and social media or by attending community meetings.

Volunteer for the steering committee or a task force. If you're interested in a more active role, volunteer for the steering committee or a task force. This work will begin in late spring and last up to one year. While the overall time commitment has yet to be determined, past participants have attended a few working meetings each month. Provide feedback to the task forces. As the task forces explores issues, they may want to gauge how stakeholders feel about particular topics. In addition to responding to social media posts, those who indicated they are interested will receive periodic, short surveys from the task forces. If you're interested in any or all of these opportunities, complete the volunteer form at Lenexa.com/Vision2040 or fill a form at City Hall by April 16, 2018.

RIDGEVIEW ROAD EXTENSION PROJECT BEGINS The design-build process has begun on a new section of Ridgeview Road that will connect Kansas Highway 10 to Prairie Star Parkway. Once this project is completed, the new road will provide a vital transportation connection and open up the surrounding area to new development opportunities.

A long road to progress Staff have been working with adjacent property owners to move the Ridgeview Road project forward for some time. But subsurface mining, rough and rocky terrain and environmental mitigation meant the roadway construction and associated development would be difficult and expensive. Recently, the cities of Lenexa and Olathe partnered with the Kansas Department of Transportation to improve the K-10/ Ridgeview interchange as part of the Johnson County Gateway Project. This improvement, along with an increased interest in developing the area's

surface and subsurface land, has made construction of the roadway viable.

The project at a glance As design begins, we know the project will entail: • Constructing Ridgeview Road as a four-lane, divided arterial roadway, including a 250-foot bridge over Mill Creek. • Constructing 99th Street from Britton Street west to Ridgeview Road. • Intersection improvements at Ridgeview Road/Prairie Star Parkway. • Construction of 98th Street, which will provide a second access point into the Meritex subsurface development. • Construction of about 2 acres of wetlands west of Ridgeview Road and south of Mill Creek Streamway Park to replace a half acre of wetlands that will be disturbed near the park.

AT LEFT: Rough, rocky terrain and subsurface mining have been challenges to the Ridgeview Road extension project, which began in March. ABOVE: A map of the planned improvements.

Traffic & trail impacts Disruptions to transit and trails are expected to be limited during the project. The parking lot at the Little Mill Creek Trailhead will move to a temporary location while work is completed nearby. This work is tentatively scheduled for early spring of 2019. For 60 days or less, Prairie Star Parkway may be reduced to one lane in each direction. And, the northbound lanes of Ridgeview Road over K-10 and the westbound exit ramp may close for one full weekend.

Moving forward A public project meeting on March 15 helped to gather feedback that will influence the final design. Staff is working with a team from Pyramid Contractors, Renaissance Infrastructure Consulting and Lochner to develop design options to present to the City Council. The project is expected to be complete by November 2019.

NOW HIRING: LIFEGUARDS We’re looking for summer lifeguards for our three outdoor pools and have year-round positions open at the Lenexa Rec Center! Lifeguards are required to be StarGuard LifeGuard certified (free for eligible applicants). Apply at Lenexa.com/jobs

Legler Barn, circa 1970, in its original location near 95th Street and Quivira Road

LEGLER BARN

Honoring the museum's 35th anniversary

The restored Legler Barn is built of many of the original materials used by Adam Legler and his family in 1864, including the limestone hauled by horse and wagon and walnut timbers that were obtained from Native Americans by trading cabbages.

Learn more about the Leglers and the barn they left future Lenexans through the Living Lenexa History video series at Lenexa.com/History. A local landmark is celebrating its 35th year bringing Lenexa's history to life. In 1864, Swiss immigrant Adam Legler, his wife Elizabeth and their three sons built a barn on the northwest corner of 95th Street and Quivira Road. This was a busy thoroughfare in Legler's time, too - the Santa Fe Trail crossed this intersection to the southwest toward Olathe. To make way for commercial construction, the barn was razed in 1972. But some were determined to give the barn a new purpose. The Holland Corporation, Gus Bogina and City Councilman John McNerney distributed "Save the Barn" collection boxes to raise funds to restore the barn. Their efforts were a success. For about a decade, the stones saved from the barn were stored in caves of the

Holland Quarry in west Lenexa. In the early 1980s, the reconstruction of the barn began with William F. "Bud" Thompson as the general volunteer overseer and Neal Harvey as the carpentry subcontractor. To expand the barn from its original size, the team used a combination of new stone and rocks from other historic Lenexa buildings – the Lenexa District No. 46 Schoolhouse and the Max Zahner home.

A team of volunteers worked together to restore the barn. Historic photos courtesy of the Lenexa Historical Society.

Restoration was completed in 1983, and on May 3 of that year, the facility was opened as Lenexa's history museum, the Legler Barn Museum. The new barn contained a full basement, park restroom facilities and plenty of space to store and display many of Lenexa's historic artifacts. The museum is open to visitors Wednesdays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

"Shopping at a Farmers Market is like a food carnival! There are so many vivid colors, incredible smells and friends to meet." - Jane Wohletz, Wohletz Farm Fresh

demos in The Kitchen at the Public Market, where Farmers Market vendors will demonstrate new ways to incorporate the freshest in-season produce into recipes. Visitors can also can drop by Public Market merchants to grab a glass of wine or a latté to sip while they shop at the Farmers Market, thanks to the civic campus's one-of-a-kind designation as a common consumption area. And you'll be able to spot some Public Market merchants offering special items on Farmers Market mornings.

Staff from the Lenexa Rec Center will venture outside to host free fitness activities like family workouts on the Commons across from the vendor booths for a fun, active morning. Organizer Jenny Doty said that she's also looking forward to offering educational programs in partnership with the Johnson County Library once the new Lenexa City Center Library opens on the civic campus in 2019. Many of the vendors coming to the Farmers Market said they were drawn to the collaborative energy and activity of the civic campus and surrounding Lenexa City Center neighborhood. "We receive tremendous support from the Lenexa community," said Rich Downs, owner of Lenexa-based Scoby Masters

Tea-Biotics Kombucha. "We are excited to be a part of the aggressive expansion taking place by the city leaders of Lenexa. What a great time to be a Lenexa business and resident."

A CONNECTION TO YOUR MEAL Lenexa's commitment to supporting local business is a great asset to growing a healthy farmers market, which thrives on the connection between producers and customers. "Many of us don't know where our food comes from, how it was transported and how long ago, who grew it and what chemicals were used in the process," said Molly Keenan, New Roots for Refugees coordinator. "When you shop at the farmers market, you cut out all the unknowns in the process. You meet and talk with the farmer who grew your food without chemicals, harvested it that morning and drove it a very short distance for you to buy." All vendors at the Lenexa Farmers Market must grow or make their product within 250 miles of the market. The Market's furthest vendor is from Manhattan, and many of the vendors you'll see produce their products right here in Lenexa. Muelebeke Farms grows just across the golf course near City Center! Farmers markets can also turn grocery shopping into a fun, collaborative experience. When the farmer knows their product – and knows a little about your family's tastes -– they can make suggestions for new ingredients to work

into your meal. "We are excited to bring our farm-fresh products to a place where people can make them part of their dinner," said Jacob Thomas, owner of JET Produce. "Seeing people come week after week and hearing comments like 'that was the best tomato I've ever had,' or 'you were right, kohlrabi is super delicious' makes everything we do worthwhile."
