FINAL QUIVIRA ROAD STUDY WORKSHOP SET FOR JAN. 11
Blue stars mark a unique new area on the civic campus When you visit the Lenexa civic campus, you may notice some blue stars bordering the Commons.
responsibly, heed any blue stars and "no alcohol beyond this point" signs and have a great time at the Public Market!
These stars designate the boundaries of the Lenexa Public Market's common consumption area, which permits several merchants to sell alcoholic beverages and allows customers to move freely with their beverage within the boundaries.
The stars are also a good boundary to show where you should "walk your wheels." Visitors are welcome to ride bikes, skateboards and roller skates to the campus, but we ask that you carry or push them on the Commons for the safety of pedestrians and yourself.
This common consumption area is the first of its kind in Kansas. So, after buying an alcoholic beverage from one of our local merchants, please drink
Residents who live, work and shop along Quivira Road are invited to attend the third and final public workshop for the Quivira Road Corridor Study on Jan. 11 at 6 p.m. at the Lenexa Community Center. At this meeting, attendees can view and provide feedback on short-term and long-term recommendations for improving transportation, livability and investment opportunities along the corridor. Since receiving a grant from the Mid-America Regional Council in July 2017 to study the Quivira Road corridor between 79th and 99th Streets, the City of Lenexa has been working with a team of consultants and an advisory committee to conduct a communitydriven process resulting in a plan for public and private improvements.
For more information about the common consumption area, go to LenexaPublicMarket.com.

A low-salt diet for your driveway Salt plays an important role in keeping roads and walkways safe during icy weather, but not without causing a few problems along the way. Each winter, salt causes harm to vehicles, driveways, pets, plants and water. Chloride from salt is a critical pollutant in Mill Creek, which flows through Lenexa. High levels of pollutants like chloride can harm wildlife and require additional treatment for drinking water. You can take a few steps at home to help ease the many nuisances of salt use. Consider alternative de-icers: Calcium magnesium acetate has been shown to have the least impact on pets, wildlife and plants, but it can be expensive. potassium acetate and calcium chloride are also good options. Use as little salt as possible: Sometimes, cost-effective salt (sodium chloride) is the
only practical option. Lenexa's Municipal Services Department uses technology to monitor, reduce and control the application of salt to use as little as possible. We also use wetting agents like calcium chloride to increase the effectiveness of the salt. These are easy principles to exercise at home, too. Always read the instructions before using a de-icer. Applying more salt than the recommended amount will not increase its effectiveness nor make it work more quickly. Apply salt before the precipitation arrives: De-icers are more effective if they are in direct contact with the ice. Keep an eye on forecast before applying salt: If the pavement temperature is lower than 15 degrees, the salt will not melt the ice efficiently.
Be cautious with quick traction methods: It's a good idea to keep a bag of sand or cat litter in your vehicle to provide traction in case of an emergency, but these materials aren't ideal for household use. Sand and litter easily clump together, creating a mess if tracked into your home and problems for stormwater runoff. If you must use these materials, sweep them up as soon as you can.
KEEP UP WITH OUR SNOW AND ICE TREATMENT PROGRESS Lenexa's snow plow crews work diligently each winter to clear all roads. You can follow our plowing progress at Lenexa.com/Snow and on social media. Periodic updates will be provided during winter weather events. If after 48 hours following the storm you believe your street was missed, please report it at Lenexa.com/311.
