Put the freeze on winter fires The Lenexa Fire Department reminds everyone that fire prevention is important year round. During the winter months, however, it is imperative to make fire prevention a priority in order to keep your family safe.

Carbon monoxide (CO) is often called the invisible killer because it is an odorless, colorless gas. Because it is created as a result of incomplete burning of fuels, CO incidents are more common during winter months. 2,000 people die and 40,000 others are treated for CO poisoning every year. Symptoms of CO poisoning include fatigue, persistent, throbbing headache, pale skin, dizziness, blurred vision, nausea, vomiting, shortness of breath and chest pain.

Nearly half of holiday decoration fires happen because decorations are placed too close to a heat source. Keep candles at least 12 away from anything that could catch on fire.

CO detectors should be installed on every level of your home. Test them once a month, and verify that they can be heard from every sleeping area. Make sure your tree is at least 3 feet away from any heat source such as fireplaces, heaters and candles.

Keep your fireplace flue open for adequate ventilation until embers are completely burned out. Examine the chimney and vents for blockages, cracks, leaks, discolored bricks and improper connections. Heating systems should be inspected and serviced before each season. Never use unvented fuel-burning appliances such as heaters and lanterns in enclosed areas.

6 • TOWNTALK

Consider using battery-operated flameless candles, which can look, smell, and feel like real candles. If you do use lit candles, make sure they are in stable holders, place them where they cannot be knocked over easily and never leave them unattended.

Dispose of your live tree soon after the holidays Inspect electrical decorations and lights each year before you put them up. Throw away light strands with frayed, pinched or exposed wires.

When choosing a live Christmas tree, only buy one with fresh green needles that do not fall off when touched.

The City of Lenexa offers two convenient options for you to dispose of live trees: Drop-off: Trees may be dropped off at the Little Mill Creek North Park parking lot, 79th and Cottonwood streets, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 26 through Jan. 13. Please remove all decorations, nails and plastic bags. For more information, contact Landscape Supervisor Curt Talken at ctalken@lenexa.com. Pickup service: We are partnering with local Boy Scout Troop 136 for its convenient annual Christmas Tree pickup service. You can schedule a pickup for the following times: • Saturday, Dec. 29, 8 a.m. • Sunday, Dec. 30, 1 p.m. • Tuesday, Jan. 1, 8 a.m. • Saturday, Jan. 5, 8 a.m.

Add water to the tree stand daily. Christmas trees become increasingly combustible as they dry out in your home. This process is accelerated when not watered every day. A dry tree can catch fire and burn faster than newspaper. Visit Lenexa.com/TownTalk to watch a video showing how quickly a dried out Christmas tree will burn compared to a well-watered tree.

Visit Troop136.org to schedule your pickup or learn more. The Scouts request a minimum $10 donation for this service.

Great gift idea!

Before placing a real tree in the stand, cut 2” from the base of the trunk.

Regardless of the season, the presence of working smoke alarms in your home is the best way to ensure your family’s safety and minimize property loss due to fire. If you are looking for gift ideas this holiday season, give the gift of life: send your friends a smoke alarm!

BE PREPARED FOR SNOW SEASON When wintery weather is in the forecast, Lenexa Municipal Services crews start preparing well in advance. You can be a proactive partner in keeping the City's streets safe and clear — while protecting yourself, your kids and your property — by following these tips.

Wait to report missed streets

Our goal is to have all streets treated, plowed and cleared 48 hours after the storm has ended. Many factors affect our response time and type of response to a winter storm: timing of the event, temperatures and severity of the event. Report a missed street using our Service Request System at Lenexa.com/311. Please allow 48 hours following the completion of a winter storm before reporting your street as missed.

Share the road with plows

Stay back at least 30 feet from the rear of a plow truck so the driver can see you. Do not assume that the driver can see you. If you can’t see the driver in his mirrors, he can’t see you. Avoid passing or driving alongside these trucks. Plow trucks are capable of removing multiple lanes of snow while simultaneously spreading salt or sand on the roadways. Please allow enough room for the trucks to operate in a safe manner.

Prevent household nuisances

When snow plow trucks pass by your home, a windrow of snow can be pushed up against the curb and in front of your driveway. This is unavoidable and is due to the plow removing snow from the center of the road. To help reduce the appearance of windrows, pile snow on the left side of your driveway (facing your home), and shovel an inlet on the right side.  Place a marker, such as a survey flag, behind the back of your curb to help our drivers to identify the curb location and prevent lawn damage. Flags are available for pick up at no charge at our Municipal Services Service Center, 7700 Cottonwood. For more information, call 913.477.7880.

Protect kids & their snowmen

Teach your children to stay behind the sidewalks when they see a truck coming. The heavy, wet snow coming off the plow is capable of being thrown several feet, and it can potentially injure you if you are too close. Build snow forts, igloos and snowmen far away from the street and avoid using the snow banks on the edge of the road. Our trucks will often return to bump the snow back to the curb, and this can tear open or collapse their creations.

Keep pets comfortable during the winter months With winter approaching, don’t neglect the comfort and safety of your furry loved ones. Lenexa City Ordinance requires that pets left outside have access to a sound, weatherproof enclosure such as a doghouse and drinkable water (clean, unfrozen). For extra warmth, doghouses can be lined with straw, hay or blankets. If possible, try to position the doghouse away from prevailing winds, ideally next to a larger structure like your home. Also, consider investing in a heated water bowl which will keep your pets dish from freezing over in the cold. Questions? Our Animal Control Unit can be reached at 913.477.7385.

HOLIDAY SHOPPING SAFETY TIPS FROM THE LENEXA POLICE DEPARTMENT

Have the LPD keep an eye on your home If you’re traveling out of town this holiday season, sign up for our Vacation House Watch Program. While you’re away, Police Department personnel will periodically check on your home for any signs of suspicious activity. If they find anything amiss they’ll take appropriate action and notify you. Simply fill out the Vacation House Watch form on our website a few days before you plan to leave town. Lenexa.com/Police.

Keep these safety tips in mind during this holiday shopping season. Remember that crooks are doing their shopping as well! • Secure merchandise in the trunk or rearmost part of your vehicle, out of sight from passenger doors and windows. • Remain vigilant of your surroundings when walking to and from your car. Keep your head up and have your keys ready to enter your vehicle without being distracted. • Keep purses and wallets in your possession at all times. Avoid the temptation to place them in shopping carts, on top of your car or otherwise setting them down. Avoid carrying large amounts of cash with you.

APPLY NOW FOR THE NEXT CITIZENS’ POLICE ACADEMY Come learn about the inner workings of the Lenexa Police Department with the Citizens' Police Academy! This popular 10-week program is in its 24th year. Applications are currently being accepted for the upcoming class. The next class starts Jan. 8 and runs weekly until Mar. 19. Classes are on Tuesdays from 6–9 p.m. at the Lenexa Police Department.

Topics covered include patrol procedures, criminal investigations, use of force, K-9, drones, tactical operations and, of course, the always-popular field trips to the Johnson County Jail and Crime Lab. Spots are limited and fill up quickly! Once the class is full, applicants will be put on a wait list. To learn more or apply, visit Lenexa.com/TownTalk.

• When expecting online deliveries, have a trusted neighbor pick them up from your porch right away. Better yet, if you can, have the packages delivered to work! • Monitor your banking and credit card statements for any fraudulent charges or signs your account has been compromised. • Report suspicious people or activity in your neighborhood to 911. Burglars or “porch pirates” may be cruising around looking for packages to steal or homes to break into.

LENEXA PROPERTY TAXES: AT A GLANCE

BREAK IT DOWN

PROPERTY TAX BILLS ARRIVED IN NOVEMBER. HERE'S WHERE YOUR MONEY GOES.

What you pay in property tax is based on your home's appraised value and the mill levy rate, the property tax rate. The charts below show the 2018 mill levies for the 2019 budget.

DID YOU KNOW? Lenexa's 2019 mill levy will be 1.923 mills lower than the 2018 rate!

6.0% IN CONTEXT The average home value in Lenexa is now $307,000. A home of this value would pay $1,055.94 per year in City of Lenexa property taxes (using the 2018 mill levy). This equates to $88 per month. This means that, every month, you might spend the same amount on property tax as you would on...

WHAT'S THIS FEE? The stormwater management fee is the primary fee paid on the tax bill ($109 per home annually). This fee helps cover the cost of storm drainage services throughout the City, which helps minimize flooding during heavy rain events. Some homeowners may pay other special assessments for specific projects (usually street construction) in their area.

Public Safety Community Infrastructure Parks & Recreation Economic Development Debt Service Transfers for Capital Projects Other Transfers General Government Total

BUDGET TIP: Know your flood risk, be prepared While Lenexa invests in its storm drainage system to prevent flooding, there are several ways you can further minimize your flood risk. • View our interactive floodplain map to see how close your home is to flood-prone areas. To find the map, go to RainToRecreation.org and click on Flooding Information. If you have questions, you can reach our Community Development staff at 477.7500. • Maintain good yard drainage. Make sure your grade slopes away from the house, and don't block swales. • Even if you don't live in a floodplain, it may still be wise to have flood insurance. Standard homeowners policies don't cover flooding. Lenexa residents get up to a 15% discount on flood insurance due to the City's participation in the Community Rating System.
