New Lenexa website coming soon! Over the last year, our staff has been working to redesign and update the city’s website, and it will go live in mid-February at Lenexa.com. Our current website has not been updated since 2009. Technology changes quickly, and that has brought many challenges to our website users, and we sought to fix those problems. About 18 months ago, we asked you to tell us what you liked and disliked about our current website. We listened and incorporated your feedback as we redesigned the site. The new site will be mobile responsive, which means it will resize and work well no matter which device you use to access it. Other features include news articles, calendars, interactive lists and improved navigation. We also created quick links in many places, allowing you to complete common tasks on our website with fewer button clicks. Take a look at a sneak peek of the new website on the right, and let us know what you think once it goes live. We hope you like it as much as we do!

RideKC extends transit service along 95th Street to Lenexa In January, RideKC introduced transit service connecting Lenexa residents and businesses to the rest of the Kansas City region. New east-west service along 95th Street will connect riders to some of Johnson County’s major destinations such as Lenexa City Center and Oak Park Mall. The new route also provides regional connections to downtown Kansas City and the Country Club Plaza. The 495 95th Street route running between the Waldo neighborhood in Kansas City, Missouri, and Oak Park Mall in Overland Park was extended 4 miles west to Lenexa City Center, an area not previously served by transit. This route complements expanded bus service on Lenexa’s eastern border along Quivira Road (475 Quivira-75th Street route) that started last summer.

Route: Operates between 87th Street and Scarborough Street at Lenexa City Center and 74th Terrace and Broadway Street in the Waldo neighborhood of Kansas City, Mo. Time of service: Weekdays from about 5:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. and from about 3:45 p.m. to 7 p.m. Fare: $1.50 a ride. Drivers don’t carry cash. Change is given in the form of a card that can be applied to future trips. Purchasing a pass: Go to RideKC.org or buy a 31-day pass at Overland Park City Hall, 8500 Santa Fe Dr. Where to board: At any designated bus stop. Riders can also wave for a bus to stop anywhere along the route in Johnson County. Park-and-ride lot: Nearest lot for Lenexa residents is at 95th Street and Neiman Road at Oak Park Mall.

SENIOR TAXI PROGRAM TRANSITIONS TO RIDEKC TAXI We recently transitioned Lenexa’s Senior Taxi Program to RideKC Taxi. This regional voucher program provides subsidized taxi rides to residents who are age 65 and older or have a disability. It is federally funded and operated in partnership with 10/10 Taxi. Residents must apply and be approved to use the program.

4 • TOWNTALK

Riders are no longer restricted to destinations within Lenexa city limits or to medical appointments, as they were with the Senior Taxi Program. Each one-way trip costs $5 and covers up to 10 miles. The rider pays the additional cost for distances beyond that. Participants can load up to 10 one-way rides per month on an electronic fare card, which works like a debit card.

The RideKC Taxi service is available any day at any time, including weekends and holidays. Call 10/10 Taxi at 816.777.1104 at least 45 minutes in advance to schedule a trip. Learn more at RideKC.org or 816.221.0660. Have questions about the program transition? Contact Danielle Dulin, ddulin@lenexa.com.

DIANE LINVER 28 YEARS OF DEDICATED SERVICE

W

hen residents voted Diane Linver into office in 1989 to represent Ward 2, little did they know they were electing a person who would eventually become the one of the longest-serving members of the Lenexa City Council. Linver stepped down at the end of December 2016 after spending 28 years on the council. “Council Member Linver’s dedication to Lenexa is extraordinary,” said Mayor Michael Boehm. “During nearly three decades of service, she has made remarkable contributions to our community.”

Diane Linver was honored in January after serving 28 years on the Lenexa City Council. (TOP) Linver is joined by council members Lou Serrone, Andy Huckaba, Mandy Stuke, Mayor Mike Boehm, Tom Nolte, Steve Lemons and Joe Karlin.

6 • TOWNTALK

When Linver was first elected, the population of Lenexa was nearing 34,000. Nearly 30 years later, that figure swelled to more than 52,000. Lenexa also annexed new areas during this time, increasing the physical size of the city almost 30 percent. “Diane’s experience and insight proved invaluable as Lenexa grew,” said Boehm. “Her perspective was always welcomed by other council members as we deliberated major issues which impacted our residents and business community.” Lenexa’s elected officials made many important strategic decisions about the city during the past 30 years. Linver helped

facilitate Lenexa’s growth west of I-435 and supported the annexation of new areas in the early- and mid-1990s, while being sensitive to and protective of retaining much of the rural character of existing development. During her tenure on City Council, the Vision 2020 and Vision 2030 strategic plans were conceptualized and the groundwork was laid for Lenexa City Center. Linver was key to many of these discussions and was a strong supporter of high-quality, well-planned growth.

Over the years, Linver was able to create a significant network connecting Lenexa to other communities and their governing bodies. She served on the National League of Cities Human Development Committee from 1998 to 2013 and twice served as this committee’s vice chair. She was honored in 2009 with the E.A. Mosher Excellence in Local Government Award by the League of Kansas Municipalities for her dedication to public service. Through that award process, it was noted that, “Diane has Lenexa’s interests at heart in all she does, and she makes decisions based on what she believes is right for the community as a whole. She is passionate and speaks out about issues.”

“I enjoyed getting to know so many people from Lenexa and listening to their thoughts and dreams for our community.” — Diane Linver

While Linver advocated for a number of projects, she had a particular interest in the arts and nature. She enthusiastically supported Lenexa Arts Council programs and events, including the rotating art shows at City Hall. Her love of the outdoors was evident when discussing parks and landscaping.

Linver has also been a steadfast supporter of the professional staff who serve Lenexa. After major events — from snowstorms to festivals — she would thank employees with kind words and, often, freshly baked cookies. She advocated for employees to help ensure that Lenexa recruited and retained outstanding professional staff to serve residents.

Linver continues to be part of the Lenexa community she loves. “It has been my privilege to serve our residents, and I am so proud of all we accomplished in Lenexa,” she said. “I have worked with many great people during my tenure and have no regrets about my time as a council member. I enjoyed getting to know so many people from Lenexa and listening to their thoughts and dreams for our community.”

Linver spent much of her time as a council member giving back to the community, including serving meals at the annual senior Thanksgiving meal.

Linver signed the final beam used at the Civic Center Project’s Topping Out Ceremony in 2016. Linver has seen City Center go from idea to execution during her tenure as a council member.

Council Member Amy Slater and Linver often rode together during the annual Community Days Parade.
