LENEXA FIREFIGHTERS HONORED WITH MEDAL OF VALOR Two Lenexa firefighters were among 14 public safety officers awarded the Public Safety Officer Medal of Valor by President Donald Trump during a White House ceremony on Wednesday, May 22. The Medal of Valor is awarded to public safety officers who have exhibited exceptional courage, regardless of personal safety, in the attempt to save or protect others from harm. It is the highest national award for valor presented to a public safety officer. Lenexa Fire Captain Dustin Moore and Firefighter Paramedic Andrew Freisner were part of a team who responded to an apartment fire in April 2017. Working alongside other fire personnel from Lenexa, Shawnee and Overland Park, they successfully rescued an adult, two small children and a family pet from a life-threatening situation.

President Donald Trump awards the Public Safety Medal of Valor to Firefighter Paramedic Andrew Freisner (left) and Fire Captain Dustin Moore (right). When fire crews arrived at the apartment building, the fire was visible on three sides of the structure and roof. Wind gusts of 35 mph were causing the fire to grow aggressively, driving the blaze throughout the building. All three levels of the building’s interior stairwells were impassable due to the fire, which meant no one could evacuate or enter the building. A dispatcher from the Johnson County Emergency Communications Center advised responders of a family trapped in an apartment on the second floor. Moore and Freisner used a ladder to access the family’s balcony and removed the glass from a locked sliding door. The apartment was smoke-filled with near-zero visibility and increasing heat level, a situation deemed immediately dangerous to life and health. Without hesitation, Moore and Freisner entered the apartment

and searched for the family. The firefighters located an adult and two young children in a bedroom, where they were conscious but in declining health conditions. Moore and Freisner helped evacuate the family to the apartment’s balcony, where other firefighters took the three to safety. Moore reentered the apartment to make sure no one else was there and rescued the family’s dog. “It is an honor to have members of the Lenexa Fire Department be recognized for selflessly upholding their oath to serve and protect our community,” said Lenexa Fire Chief Lonny Owens. “During this incident, Fire Captain Dustin Moore and Firefighter Paramedic Andrew Freisner represented the City of Lenexa and its Fire Department with professionalism and bravery.”

PRIMARY ELECTION TO BE HELD FOR WARD 4 SEAT

A public hearing for the 2020 Recommended Budget is set for July 16 at 7 p.m. during the regularly scheduled City Council meeting at Lenexa City Hall.

Residents in Ward 4 will have the opportunity to vote in a primary election to decide which two of three City Council candidates will proceed to the general election in the fall.

You can view the 2020 Recommended Budget and the Executive Summary at Lenexa.com/Budget.

The last day to register to vote in the primary is July 16. The primary will be held Aug. 6, with advance voting available in person and by mail.

GRILLING FIRE SAFETY

Keep a 3-foot safe zone around your grill to keep kids and pets safe.

se ts your grill id e.

If you live in a multifamily building like an apartment complex, you cannot use a grill on your balcony or deck unless it is protected by a sprinkler system. In that case, only gas grills are allowed.

Follow these tips from the U.S. Fire Administration and our fire prevention staff to protect yourself and your property.

Don’t walk away from grills, fire pits or patio torches when they’re lit. Keep an eye on them.

Open your gas grill before lighting.

Clean your grill after each use to remove grease that can start a fire.

Once the coals from your grill have cooled, place them in a metal can. Charcoal can stay hot enough to start a fire for more than 24 hours after use!

Have questions? Fire Department staff will be happy to give you a hand. You can call them at 913.888.6380.

Why I work for the City of Lenexa “We get to assist people with planning their events and activities, which allows us to connect to them and really care about their success. I’m inspired by my teammates who are passionate about what they do.

We are strong in supporting each other through challenges. And, work does not interfere with my family life. I love that they can visit the Rec Center or Public Market and say hi.”

PICKLEBALL PARADISE: The tennis courts at Bois d’Arc Park will be replaced with a complex of eight pickleball courts. Pickleball – one of the fastest-growing sports in the country — is a low-impact racket sport that blends tennis, badminton and pingpong. It’s a great form of fitness for people of all ages. The Lenexa Rec Center often offers pickleball clinics for those wanting to learn to play.

Two parks to get sport court upgrades Starting this summer, the aging tennis courts at Sar-Ko-Par Trails Park and nearby Bois D’Arc Park will be reconstructed as outdoor amenities that accommodate a mix of recreation uses. At Sar-Ko-Par Trails Park, in place of the existing four tennis courts, the City of Lenexa will install a roller hockey rink that accommodates roller hockey and broom ball but can also be used for soccer play, as well as rebuild two courts for tennis. Improvements include a seating area and precision-aimed sports lighting that cuts down on glare for the players and light

spill into surrounding neighborhoods. At Bois D’Arc Park, the four old tennis courts will be rebuilt as eight pickleball courts, with a new playing surface and slightly smaller footprint. New fencing, precision-aimed sports lighting, a variety of seating and shade structures will make this a great spot to get in the game or watch one. Progress has been slowed by the harsh winter, wet spring and contractor availability. Residents will be able to enjoy the new sport court features once construction is complete.

END-OF-SEASON HOURS Flat Rock Creek Pool will close for the season Aug. 4. Ad Astra Pool will close the same day and will not reopen next season. Plans are in the works to replace the pool with a different park amenity.

As a reminder, Lenexa City Code prohibits the discharge, firing or igniting of fireworks within city limits. These July 4 favorites are not considered fireworks and are legal in Lenexa: sparklers, snakes, smoke bombs and paper caps with less than .25 grain of explosive.

Indian Trails Aquatic Center will have shortened hours from Aug. 5 through Sept. 2. The pool will be open weekdays from 4 to 7 p.m. and weekends from noon to 7 p.m.

The Lenexa Police Department typically responds to numerous fireworks calls over the holiday, which can result in confiscation of fireworks and citations. Please be mindful of city rules as you celebrate! You can view our ordinance on fireworks at Lenexa.com/TownTalk.

September 2 will be the last day the pool is open, with hours from noon to 6 p.m.

Take a walk, learn something new

Raindrop Walk WALK BEGINS AT THE LENEXA REC CENTER, 17201 W. 87TH ST. PKWY. ABOUT 0.55 MILES START TO FINISH, 1.1 MILES ROUND TRIP. Bustling Lenexa City Center is designed to be dynamic, dense and unlike many of the grassy neighborhoods of our suburban community. But all this activity — combined with ample concrete surfaces and rooftops — can create challenges in keeping pollutants out of our lakes and streams. This self-guided walking tour takes you on the journey of a raindrop through six stops from the Lenexa Rec Center’s main entrance to a bridge over the creek that carries water to Shawnee Mission Lake. At each sign, you’ll learn what challenges we face in protecting our water supply, how Lenexa treats rain runoff and ways you can help improve water quality at home — many of which you can receive reimbursement for through our Cost Share Program (details at Lenexa.com/CostShare). As you walk back to the civic campus after finishing the tour, try to spot all the native wildlife hidden in each sign. Protecting water quality also protects their natural habitats.

Evan Knaus Memorial Tree Walk BLACK HOOF PARK, 8053 MONTICELLO RD. TRAIL IS APPROXIMATELY 2.5 MILES. Scenic Black Hoof Park at 90th Street and Monticello Road offers many delights for nature lovers, including boating and fishing on Lake Lenexa, a unique dam and spillway, natural play areas for kids, and miles of trails through open grass and wooded areas. On your next visit, look for a sign near the Oak Shelter that maps the new Evan Knaus Memorial Tree Walk. Evan Knaus was a City of Lenexa employee who worked as part of the Parks & Recreation landscape crew. He passed away in February 2016 while on the job. His family, friends and co-workers funded a unique memorial to honor Evan’s passion for nature and trees. Along the Black Hoof Park Trail that surrounds the lake, nearly three dozen trees are identified with plaques that show a typical leaf and list their key characteristics. As you stroll or jog around Lake Lenexa, you can learn about the diversity of our trees while also enjoying the beauty of nature.

TIPS FOR TAKING CARE OF STREET TREES With emerald ash borer killing off swaths of the urban forest and spring storms battering limbs, some Lenexa residents have noticed their trees are looking a little ragged this summer. Just as they mow the grass or rake the leaves along the street, homeowners are responsible for maintaining the trees on their property — including street trees located in the right of way. DISPOSING OF DEAD LIMBS Your waste hauler is required to offer yard waste collection —including limb pickup — as part of its basic service charge. Check with your hauler to see what rules apply for you. In extreme, extraordinary circumstances like severe ice or wind storms, the City may schedule curbside limb pickup for affected areas. When sporadic damage occurs due

to weather, we will typically open a debris drop-off site. You can learn about these events by signing up for our My Lenexa News e-newsletter at Lenexa.com/ENews or following us on social media.

Meet Lenexa City Manager Beccy Yocham With a history of proven leadership in the organization and a commitment to Lenexa’s traditions of progress, community spirit and excellent public services, the Lenexa City Council unanimously appointed previous Lenexa Community Development Director Beccy Yocham as Lenexa’s new City Manager. As City Manager, she works closely with elected officials to set and achieve goals for the community and oversees the city’s professional staff. Beccy began her new role May 1 as only the fourth City Manager in Lenexa’s history. In this Q&A, she discusses her past work with the City and what makes Lenexa a great place to live, work and play. How has Lenexa changed in the years you’ve lived and worked here? I have lived and/or worked in Lenexa for over 20 years and the most obvious change is the growth. Lenexa has grown, both geographically and by population, tremendously over that time. But the main things that attracted me to Lenexa as a place to live and to

8 • TOWNTALK

the City organization as an employer haven’t changed. Lenexa’s sense of community is unparalleled — from the many terrific festivals to our outstanding parks and city facilities and especially the sense of pride that our residents feel about this community. Our residents have high expectations and every member of the City organization, from the Mayor and City Council to our employees, are committed to meeting or exceeding those expectations and to excellence in all that we do, especially providing top-quality services to our residents. I was impressed by those things in 1997 when I started work at the City and I’m even more impressed by them today. What are some of the most rewarding projects you’ve worked on? I’ve been very lucky to have been a part of many exciting and widely varied projects during my time at the City. Years ago, I acquired property for the construction of Blackhoof Park & Lake Lenexa and for the extension of Prairie

Star Parkway over Mill Creek. More recently, I was part of the team that studied ways to enhance the Old Town area, and soon we’ll install wayside horns at the two railroad crossings in Old Town. And all along the way, I’ve worked on dozens of exciting projects that have helped the City to realize the vision for Lenexa City Center. Seeing those and so many other projects come to fruition in ways that literally change the landscape of this community has always been a highlight of my job and one of the many reasons it is fun to come to work here every day. How has your time working at Lenexa prepared you for your new position? Over my time with the City, I have had the opportunity to work with every city department in a wide variety of ways. This has allowed me to learn, understand and, more importantly, appreciate the inner workings of the City from multiple perspectives.

As a city attorney, I worked with various City departments on contract, employment, risk management and numerous general legal matters. As the community development director, I have been involved in all aspects of the development process during a time of record growth in this community. This broad experience has helped me to develop strong relationships across the City organization, with the Governing Body and throughout the entire Lenexa community. I think these things, in combination, have prepared me to be City Manager. What are you most looking forward to in your new role? I have so much pride in and passion for this organization that I’m definitely looking forward to every aspect of this new opportunity. Above all, though, I’m excited to work with our outstanding city employees in a new and different capacity. Our operations are incredibly diverse and I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to broaden my perspective even further and support our employees in the great work they do. What were some of your main takeaways from the Vision 2040 process? First, I was blown away by the outstanding citizen participation in that process. We engaged more than 3,500 people in Vision 2040 — that was really exciting to me and is yet another testament to our great community spirit and our informed and involved residents. Beyond that, the main takeaway for me is that our citizens are really happy with the way things are going in the City and the level of city services we provide and they want us to “stay the course.” The five themes that emerged from the Vision 2040 process — Healthy People, Inviting Places, Vibrant Neighborhoods, Integrated Infrastructure and Transportation, and Thriving Economy — build upon, but are consistent with, our prior visioning

efforts and will help us to make decisions and prioritize resources into the future. What’s your favorite Lenexa spot to bring guests? I love to bring guests to the Lenexa Public Market. The Market was the first indoor food hall/public market in the region and is such a unique and special place to eat, shop and just hang out. Every time you visit the Market, it’s a different experience — there could be new vendors, new food or drink specials, a cool and fun event going on or one or more pop-up vendors offering something you can’t get anywhere else. The Market staff and vendors put their everything into making the Market a fun and welcoming place to be and I’m always proud and excited to show this great place to friends and family who are visiting Lenexa. What’s your favorite festival? This is such a tough question because Lenexa has so many great festivals and it’s hard to choose a favorite. I do really love the Chili Challenge, however, and if I have choose just one — that would probably be it. Fall is my favorite season and a cool, crisp fall weekend in Old Town Lenexa with great food, great music and fireworks is hard to beat! Plus, who doesn’t love chili, salsa and wings? Where’s your favorite spot to walk your dog in Lenexa? I love to walk my chocolate lab, Barley, on the Mill Creek Trail from near Sar-Ko-Par Trails Park northerly along Mill Creek through the Little Mill Creek North Park and soccer fields, past the Lenexa Municipal Services Center, and back westerly through Ad Astra Park and past Christa McAuliffe Elementary School. It’s a good long walk for us, which we love, and I get to check out what’s happening at a variety of City parks and facilities and even see how one of our stormwater projects is performing!

TOWNTALK • 13

Meet the sunny faces of the people who grew, raised or made your Lenexa Farmers Market products A special thing about farmers markets is having the opportunity to talk face to face with the farmers and makers who grew their heirloom tomatoes, handcrafted their soaps or bottled their wine. You’re not just buying a widget online from a faceless corporation hundreds of miles away. You’re engaging with a real person who has a local story about a small business borne of sweat equity. Aside from purchasing their products at the peak of freshness, there are other ways to connect with Lenexa Farmers Market vendors.

• Watch or taste foods that are transformed through a cooking demonstration. • Register for an upcoming cooking class or dinner featuring farmers’ insights and ingredients. (See page 13 for upcoming events). • You can even tour some of our vendors’ farms, pick fruits and vegetables there yourself, help harvest grapes or visit their brick-and-mortar shops. • Stop by our information booth on Tuesday and Saturday mornings for more ideas!
