Seen from atop the 500-stall parking garage, the Lenexa civic campus is located along eastbound 87th Street Parkway between Winchester and Penrose Streets (just west of Renner Boulevard). The civic campus includes two buildings: the Lenexa Rec Center and Lenexa City Hall. The Rec Center features an indoor walking track, indoor pool area and ample community spaces. Lenexa City Hall is a mixed-use building featuring city offices, a satellite campus of Park University, a 250-seat community forum and the Lenexa Public Market.

MAKING VISION A REALITY T

wo decades ago, residents worked together to create Vision 2020. Collectively, they spent more than 2,500 hours shaping a plan to strategically guide our community’s future. One goal to emerge from this process was the development of Lenexa City Center, which would serve “as a central meeting place for residents, with a new downtown…integrating retail sites, commercial uses, entertainment opportunities, community activity centers and public buildings…” With the opening of the new civic campus and other development, we are on our way to fulfilling this goal. During the civic campus ribbon-cutting ceremony on July 31, Mayor Michael Boehm thanked residents for their belief in the project and said, “Those who envisioned Lenexa’s future dreamed of a new gathering place at the heart of our community. A central location where we could come together to share all that is special about Lenexa. And now, that dream is a reality.” Mayor Boehm announced plans to launch the Vision 2040 planning process next year. He said, “Just as their predecessors have done in the past, this citizen-led group will come together to think strategically about what is best for our community and create a road map for our future.”

Mayor Boehm speaks to a large crowd during the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new Lenexa civic campus on July 31.

LENEXA COMMONS Lenexa Commons

The largest outdoor area on the civic campus is the Upper Commons. It features turf play areas for children, open space for events, bench seating and an outdoor stage. This area is located to the west (above) of the staircase. The Lower Commons area is located right next to the Lenexa Public Market (to the east of the staircase). It features tivoli-style lighting, open seating and outdoor fire pits to enjoy on cool evenings. Fountain Lenexa City Hall wouldn’t be complete without a fountain, and we didn’t forget to include one! The fountain is located adjacent to 87th Street Parkway between Lenexa City Hall and the Lenexa Rec Center. The fountain’s jets spray upward in various patterns throughout the day and can be lit with LED lights at night. Honoring Lenexa’s history We have honored our community’s history in several ways. We moved the statue of Na-Nex-Se, Lenexa’s namesake, to just outside the City Hall doors, so she is much more visible. The Commons also includes a history marker, honoring the places, people and things that helped shape Lenexa. You can watch videos about these important historical figures by visiting Lenexa.com/History.

LENEXA CITY HALL

17101 W. 87TH ST. PKWY., LENEXA, KS 66219 Monday through Friday, 8 a.m.–5 p.m. City offices Most offices from the old Lenexa City Hall have moved to the new Lenexa City Hall, and our staff are excited to assist you with your needs. When you get to City Hall, check in with our receptionist on the lobby floor, and they can assist you with where to go. The second floor houses Community Development offices, where staff can assist you with permits and licenses. The third floor has administrative offices, including the Finance Department, Human Resources, the Executive Department, and additional space for Community Development. Community Forum and other rentable spaces Off the lobby area are three spaces that individuals or community groups can rent: our Community Forum (a 250-seat auditorium) and the Prairie Star and Santa Fe conference rooms. Look for details soon about how to reserve those spaces for your next gathering. Art gallery Art is again showcased in City Hall, as much of the wall space in the lobby area is dedicated to the City Hall art gallery. This gallery features the work of various local 2-D and 3-D artists. The first show to be in this space is the longstanding Lenexa Artists’ Show, which showcases the beautiful talents of dozens of Lenexa residents. Parking Free parking for City Hall is available in the 500-stall garage south of the building or along 87th Street Parkway.

Part of Vision 2020’s plans called for mixed-use space, including educational institutions. We have partnered with Park University to house its 41st campus center on the second floor of the Lenexa City Hall building. We are very excited to partner with such a high-caliber institution. Park has already begun offering classes in its space and caters to both undergraduate and graduate students. Available programs of study include accounting, business administration, criminal justice, public administration, healthcare administration and nonprofit leadership. To learn more about the offerings at Park’s Lenexa campus center, go online to Park.edu/admissions.
