Junior Ranger Program

Ropes & Knots

People have been using rope and knots for thousands of years. Sailing the seas in the tall ships, building ancient cities, and tying your shoes are all examples of this. This fun and educational program will send you home with the ability to do many things, focused mostly on the use of ropes and knots used in camping and boating.

Day: Saturday, Sept. 9

Time: 2-3:30 PM

Age: 10-15

Tents, Tarps, & Shelters

This program will be focusing on being comfortable in the outdoors. Whether you are going for a simple overnight camping trip, a backpacking trip on the Appalachian Trail, or you are lost in the woods, you need to be able to shelter from the weather.

Fire Building

Knowing how to build a fire is key to comfort and survival. When you’re traveling in the wilderness, building a fire will help you stay warm, cook food, and give light. Some types of fires work best for cooking, whereas others work best as a heat source. In most situations, it is wise to know a variety of fire-building techniques for different purposes.

Journaling will deepen your observation, thinking, and memory of nature. Join us for a beginner’s class where we will discuss the elements of a journal and how to practice mindfulness in nature so that you can create your very own Nature Journal. You are welcome to bring a journal of your own or purchase one from us for $5.

Nature Walk

Animal tracks, deer trails, singing birds, trees with personality – we never know what we’ll find on our monthly nature walk. This family-friendly hike will last about two hours.

Day: 1st Saturdays

Home School Natural Science Classes

Mix some Field Study into your Earth Science curriculum this Fall! K-2nd will be learning all about ecosystems via Swamper, a Louisiana Swamp Rabbit. 3rd -8th grade will be studying animal classifications.

Toddler Nature Time (TNT)

This nature exploration program is specifically designed with toddlers in mind. Join us for story time and a guided hike through your favorite urban wilderness. Don’t worry about the rain, we have indoor space where we play, too. We encourage you to bring along a snack or lunch to enjoy on your own after the program.

Bird Walk

Looking to get a glimpse of a Painted Bunting? Having difficulty putting a feathered face to that one particular tweet? Join us for a tour of prime birding locations throughout LLELA and get tips from the experts on becoming a better birder. Birders of all skill levels are welcome.

Day: 2nd Saturdays

Time: 7:30 AM

Age: 10+

A Chance to Hike

This FREE guided nature walk for members of the Special Needs community will take place along the wide and level crushed-granite surface of the Cottonwood Trail. We may see signs of deer, coyote, or bobcat, and maybe even see an armadillo during this mile long hike! No reservations required.

Day: 3rd Saturdays; through Nov. Time: 10 AM-Noon

My First Fish

Ready? Set? Cast! Join our Environmental Educators and learn how to prepare a cane pole, bait a hook, and practice your technique. You can catch your first fish at any age!

Day: Saturdays; Sept. 2-Saturday, Nov. 4 Time: 10 AM-Noon

Saturday at the Cabin

Completely restored and furnished with all the trappings of everyday frontier life, the Minor-Porter Log House gives visitors to LLELA a window on life in Denton County in 1870. Knowledgeable volunteers will guide visitors through the structures and answer questions in this informal tour. No registration required.
