Quartet for the End of Time
Michael Collins clarinet/director Alexandra Wood violin Susan Dorey cello Catherine Edwards piano Messiaen composed his Quartet during his internment in the Stalag 8A German prisoner of war camp, during the Second World War, taking the title and inspiration from the Book of Revelation. This is a chance to hear one of the 20th century’s classical masterpieces, directed by our Principal Conductor, Michael Collins, who first performed the piece with Messaien himself. these debates have fascinated us for years; from the earliest philosophers to today’s musicians and artists, all have sought to explain and understand the existence of both the natural world and the supernatural order. We explore music inspired by both these worlds from Mozart and Beethoven to Arvo Pärt and Olivier Messiaen, with a particular focus on Sir John Tavener, who celebrates his 70th birthday in 2014. In addition the series will include three free lunchtime concert events from January - March 2014. Please see website for further details. Stephen Layton leads the Holst Singers in a late night programme of Tavener’s works for unaccompanied choir, including his settings of William Blake’s poems: The Lamb and The Tyger, his most well known work, Song for Athene, and selections from his epic masterpiece, The Veil of the Temple.
We are joined by the up and coming star of the jazz world, composer and pianist, Gwilym Simcock and his trio, to perform his new work for orchestra, and Cumbrian Thaw, a piece inspired by Gwilym’s time in the mountains and fells of the Lake District. In contrast, two of the leading composers of the Enlightenment era, Beethoven and Mozart, offer their responses to the Natural and Supernatural worlds through Beethoven’s “Pastoral” Symphony and extracts from Mozart’s much loved opera, The Magic Flute. *Part of the newmusicbiennial.com

Stephen Layton leads the Holst Singers in a late night programme of Tavener’s works for unaccompanied choir, including his settings of William Blake’s poems: The Lamb and The Tyger, his most well known work, Song for Athene, and selections from his epic masterpiece, The Veil of the Temple.
We are joined by the up and coming star of the jazz world, composer and pianist, Gwilym Simcock and his trio, to perform his new work for orchestra, and Cumbrian Thaw, a piece inspired by Gwilym’s time in the mountains and fells of the Lake District. In contrast, two of the leading composers of the Enlightenment era, Beethoven and Mozart, offer their responses to the Natural and Supernatural worlds through Beethoven’s “Pastoral” Symphony and extracts from Mozart’s much loved opera, The Magic Flute. *Part of the newmusicbiennial.com
