CLASSES IN SEPTEMBER: PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT:

"Social Security 101" September 5, 2:00 - 3:30 p.m. City Hall, 2nd Floor Training Room

This free workshop, hosted by Jacqueline Weisgarber from the Social Security Administration, will help you learn how to use my Social Security online account and other online services. You'll be able to answer questions including:

When am I eligible to receive retirement benefits? How does early retirement affect my benefits? When should I file for Medicare? and more!Â

Prior to attending the session, please go to www.socialsecurity.gov/myaccount to create a my Social Security account and print your Social Security Statement to bring to the workshop.

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT:

"8-Hour Driver Improvement Course" September 10-11, 12:00 - 4:30 p.m. (each day) City Hall, 2nd Floor Training Room

This is an 8-hour class which consists of two 12:00 - 4:30 p.m. sessions.

You must be able to attend

both days in order to receive credit for the class. The doors will be closed promptly at 12:00 p.m. Anyone not in the class at 12:00 p.m. sharp will not be permitted to participate in the class, per Department of Motor Vehicle requirements.

Class size is limited to 16 participants, so you must pre-register for the class in EDGE. The City does not charge for the class. However, the DMV does require a $10 processing fee. This must be paid in cash when you arrive for the class. No checks, money orders, or credit cards will be accepted.

Note: If you have taken an 8-Hour Defensive Driving Class within the last two years, you will not receive the merit points. Questions? Call Risk Management: Craig Roberts - 455.3812 or James Hall - 455.3813.


SUPERVISOR & MANAGEMENT TRAINING:

"Understanding the Generational Gap" September 13, 9:00 - 11:00 a.m. City Hall, 2nd Floor Training Room

If you're a supervisor and you missed this class as part of the Leadership Development Series, we're offering it again just for you. This course will focus on topics that evaluate generational shifts in workplace motivators, communication styles, and leadership styles in order to equip you to better supervise and lead your teams.

"Lunch & Learn: Managing Money" September 13, 12:00 - 1:00 p.m. City Hall, HR Training Room

Union Bank and Trust has designed a "Managing Money" session just for the City of Lynchburg Employees. This session will help you take control of your finances with discussion on the following topics:

• How to Eliminate Debt • Scaling Back Expenses • How to Create A Budget • Achieving Financial Goals • And much more…

Note: Lunch will not be provided, but you are welcome to bring your own to eat during the session.

"Communicating with GIS" September 19, 9:00 - 11:00 a.m. IT Learning Lab

Much like a picture is worth a thousand words, the same can be said about a map With this course, you will be introduced to some of the solutions we have that will help you communicate your message to a target audience. From printed to online story maps, this class covers it all!


PUBLIC PROFESSIONAL CERTIFICATION

All full-time employees are expected to complete their Public Professional Certification within their first year of employment. This certification includes a series of 7 Foundational Courses that represent a combination of instructor-based and online classes.

Afterwards, it is encouraged for you to attend at least 10 hours of training and development opportunities each year. Outside training opportunities may be included in this 10 hours but must be uploaded in EDGE.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT:

"Phone Etiquette: Technique Practice" September 26, 9:30 - 11:30 a.m. Human Services, 5th Floor Training Room

This session will serve as a follow up to our previous session on de-escalation techniques. In this course, you'll put to practice what you learned about de-escalating phone calls by working through simulated examples where you'll use techniques to practice remaining calm, redirecting, remaining assertive, and keeping control of the conversation.

LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT: "Tactics for Working Better on Teams" September 28, 1:00 - 2:30 p.m. Human Services, 5th Floor Training Room

Part of being a leader involves helping people work well together on teams. Can you help move a team from being dysfunctional to productive? Can good teams become great teams? This session will help you answer these questions and identify what you contribute to your team's dynamics.

"Collaborating with GIS" October 4, 9:00 - 12:00 p.m. IT Learning Lab

With the ability to access our applications from just about any computer in the City, GIS is a great tool for collaborating. Whether you are working on a project within your department or across many different departments, the ability to markup and share maps is a valuable skill set you can’t afford not to have. This course requires that you have completed the Online GIS Basics course.

"Lunch & Learn: Nutritional Controversies" October 10, 12:00 - 1:00 p.m. City Hall, HR Training Room

There are always new diets and magic bullet foods that gain popularity. In this Lunch & Learn session, Hannah Grindeland from HealthWorks, is going to address some food myths and the science behind what we eat. Note: Lunch will not be provided, but you are welcome to bring your own to eat during the session.

"All Points EAP: Informational Session" October 24, 10:00 - 10:45 a.m. Human Services, 5th Floor Training Room

All employees and their immediate family members are eligible for the Employee Assistance Program (EAP). EAP is a professional, confidential service that helps employees and their family members resolve personal problems that may be interfering with work performance or home life. There is no cost to the employee - the City pays 100% of the cost of the service. If you're curious to know more information about this benefit that is available to you, join us for this informational session with Darsha Clark.

"Online GIS Basics" October 30, 9:00 - 12:00 p.m. IT Learning Lab

The Online GIS Basics course is a great basic introduction or refresher class on the City’s powerful online GIS MapViewer. Covering topics such as map navigation, adding content, and exporting maps, this class is designed for the new user or for any employee looking to refresh their skills on the basics of our online GIS MapViewer.

"Interviewing Skills Workshop" November 1, 10:00 - 11:30 a.m. Human Services, 5th Floor Training Room

This workshop is designed to help you increase your confidence and better channel your nerves during the interview process. This will be a very interactive workshop with mock interview sessions to help you learn to better form your thoughts on the spot. We'll work through a number of techniques that can help you leave a lasting impression with your interviewers.

WELLNESS: "Lunch & Learn: What You Need to Know About Strokes" November 7, 12:00 - 1:00 p.m. City Hall, HR Training Room

Join us as Hannah Grindeland from HealthWorks shares the basics of stroke, what happens in a stroke, what are the risk factors, signs, and symptoms. Note: Lunch will not be provided, but you are welcome to bring your own to eat during the session.

"Using Prezi to Re-vamp Your PowerPoints" November 8, 9:00 - 10:30 a.m. IT Learning Lab

Prezi is a flash-based presentation system that allows you to create incredibly dynamic presentations. In this session, we'll focus on basic usage, template selection and formatting, and special features of navigating the software.

If you're a supervisor and you missed this class during the Leadership Development Series, we're holding this session just for you.
