Food for Fuel: Healthy Weight Management

As the holidays approach, it gets harder to stay on track with your fitness regimen. We tend to eat more and exercise less—and almost out of nowhere the pounds we tried so hard to lose all summer are back. To help stay on track this winter season, take some time out for yourself. Don’t have time to go to the gym? Do you feel like you don’t even have 30 minutes to exercise? Intermittent exercise can be just as effective as doing it all at once. You can do 10-15 minute bouts of exercise 3 times a day. Here’s how: • Do a short workout tape (leave it in your DVD player so you don’t have to search for it). • Take the dog for a walk or go on a walk with the family. • Walk your stairs for 10 minutes. • When at work, use your breaks to walk around or walk the stairs. • When watching TV, use commercial time to do squats, lunges, crunches, etc. Eating during the holidays: • Use smaller plates at meals. This is an easy way to cut down portions while still seeing a full plate. • When you gather for meals on the holidays, put the food away after you eat to avoid grazing and overeating. • Plan activities after meals to avoid sitting around and eating out of boredom. • Set a house rule that the kitchen is “closed” at a certain time at night to avoid late night snacking (your last meal should be at least 2 hours before bedtime). • Drink plenty of water. We tend to not feel as thirsty in the winter but our body still needs it just as much as when it’s hot out.

Time to eat, drink and be healthy! Learn the best ways to eat to achieve optimal energy, performance, and weight control with Pavilion Dietitian Becky Diener, RD LD. Take charge of your health today!

Give yourself some incentive: • Start the new year right by joining our new Empowered to Lose BIG Challenge, formerly known as The Biggest Loser. It’s going to be bigger and better than last year—so don’t miss out! • Check out the Community Center Facebook page for weekly fitness tips.

By using the high resistance and low impact properties of water on your body, you can increase over-all muscle strength, endurance, balance, and flexibility. This is a basic class for those starting an aquatic exercise program. Led by a certified athletic trainer, Bodies in Balance: Water is more rehab-based exercises compared to a traditional Water Fit class. If you are looking for a medically inclined approach to your water program, this is the class for you.

Bodies in Balance: Group Classes for Disease specific patients Bodies in Balance is a new program that was created for those who have arthritis, Parkinsons, fibromyalgia, or any other joint issues that may benefit from exercise. Exercise can help control progression and pain associated with joint diseases. A program that helps you stay active will help you live a more functional life Several options for continued exercise are available at Mason Community Center. Private sessions in the center’s Clinical Exercise and Post Rehabilitation programs are one option. Others may enjoy the social aspect and comfort of working with others in similar situations, as well as the lower cost of the new “Bodies in Balance” program. Bodies in Balance is a rehab-based exercise class and, compared to other land classes or to a traditional water fit class, takes more of a medical approach while also serving as a fitness class. Led by a certified athletic trainer, it is a basic class for starting an exercise program. The idea is to train to keep your “body in balance.”

Initially, Bodies in Balance: Water will be offered. If you prefer land-based programs, watch for the debut of Bodies in Balance: Land.

Bodies in Balance: Water By using the high resistance and low impact properties that water creates on your body, you can increase overall muscle strength, endurance, balance, and flexibility through activities that may be hard to do on land. The class is ideal for those who have arthritis, Parkinson, fibromyalgia, or any other joint issues that may benefit from water exercise. By using the high resistance and low impact properties that water creates on your body, you can increase overall muscle strength, endurance, balance, and flexibility. All classes are held at 11 a.m. on Wednesdays and are led by a certified personal trainer. Please see the program listing on page 14 for enrollment information.

Clinical Exercise Program

Fitness Center

Clinical Exercise Program Helps You Get Back to Fitness Are you ready to go to the gym, but there’s an ache or pain preventing you from doing so? Maybe it’s lingering issues with an old injury or something that’s been an annoyance for a while. Perhaps you are hesitating because you’re not sure whether exercise will help it or make it worse. The solution may be a more medicallybased workout program through the Mason Community Center’s clinical exercise program. This program pairs you with a certified athletic trainer from TriHealth. The athletic trainer will work with you to design a personalized exercise program to ensure your safe return to exercise and activity. All you need is a referral from your physician describing the issue and releasing you to exercise. The certified athletic trainer will then meet with you to discuss your medical conditions and design a program focused on your specific needs. The Community Center offers a variety of facilities to help you on your wellness journey, ranging from equipment in the fitness center to the track and warm water therapy pool. New Group Exercise Class Format Debuts in January Mason Community Center is proud to begin featuring BODYPUMP™ classes beginning in January. BODYPUMP will help you burn calories while you improve your strength and endurance in all the major muscle groups. ·  Ideal for both men and women ·  Gets you going with lively music and choreography ·  Keeps your interest with new routines every three months or so ·  Strengthens your entire body ·  Combines free weights, barbells, and aerobic step ·  Is part of a well established global group fitness program When you join this group exercise class, you’ll be joining a community of like-minded individuals in 75 countries who are building better strength, shaping and toning muscles, improving bone density, and improving overall fitness. You’ll burn up to 600 calories per class— great for weight control—and come away feeling strong and confident. BODYPUMP is a barbell class that combines the best weight-room exercises like squats, presses, lifts, and curls, with great music, trained instructors, and your choice of weights. All equipment will be provided. You just need comfortable workout clothes, a water bottle, a towel—or plan to use the center’s free towel service, and gym shoes. Cross-trainers are recommended because they will provide better foot support for the types of movements you will be doing in class. A typical class is 60 minutes and begins with a warm-up using light weights to get you moving. A certified BODYPUMP instructor will then guide you through the main

part of the workout, focusing on exercises for each of the major muscle groups: legs/squats, chest, back, triceps, biceps, lunges, shoulders, and abdominals. You’ll finish with stretches to help reduce the risk of muscle soreness or injury. You’ll probably feel a little sore after the first class—but keep at it! It’ll get easier! After your first few classes, take just two or three BODYPUMP classes a week. Your body needs recovery time between workouts and you should rest at least one day between classes. BODYPUMP is now one of many group exercise classes offered each week at Mason Community Center. Pick up a group exercise schedule at the center or visit www.imaginemason.org. Start today and begin reaping the benefits of BODYPUMP!

Tips for getting the most out of BODYPUMP •  Good posture is the foundation of all exercise. Focus on getting your technique right from the beginning. •  Don’t overdo it with the weights. Remember that BODYPUMP™ uses high repetition to tone and strengthen. Start gradually increasing them after six weeks. •  Look after your joints by always keeping them slightly bent—not locked—and perform the movements smoothly.

Gymnastics Multipurpose Room

The City of Mason is pleased to offer state-of-the-art facilities for gymnastics programs. The 8,200 square foot gymnastics area is complete with tumbling tracks, a table vault, and a Resi-Pit-lined gymnastics pit. Students are able to participate recreationally or move on to the competition level with the Mason Community Center’s own Mason Twisters. The make-up class will be on the corresponding day of the week after the last scheduled class.

SPORTS

Mom and Me

Golf Tip

This parent and child class will help develop your child's basic motor skills through jumping, skipping, hopping, running, and rolling. You will use beams, wedges, and mats to engage your child through structured play.

A tip from Andy Horn, golf pro at the Golf Center at Kings Island As we enter into the winter golf season, the hardy winter golfer will dress very differently. With several layers of clothing on, we all try to overswing to hit the ball like we do in the summer. Keep in mind that if you swing back a little shorter this time of year, you will hit the ball straighter. With the cold hard ground, your ball will go just as far. Work on your balance and a short backswing in the off season. This will help you hit the ball solidly in the wintertime.

EDGE

Belay Certification The Edge

Obtain independence through the knowledge of basic climbing and belaying skills. Belaying is the process of managing the climbing rope by taking it in or playing it out depending on the direction in which you are moving, and locking it off securely in the event of a fall. As a belayer, you have in your hands the safety of a climber high above who is counting on you to perform well. Date 12/3 12/10 12/17 1/7 1/14 1/21 1/28

A tip from Paul Heintz, owner of Mojo Running. Visit Mojo Running’s kiosk in the Symbiosis store at Mason Community Center or the main Mojo Running store in West Chester. Cold temperatures and winter weather don’t mean you have to give up on your outdoor training. Running and walking can still be enjoyed year round if you follow a few simple guidelines. Take the guesswork out of your winter clothing strategy with these guidelines: 1. LAYERING 1-2-3: Perspiration moves more easily through two thin layers than it does through one thick layer. A well-designed layering system keeps you warm and dry, yet still allows freedom of movement. 2. YOU GOTTA BREATHE: Breathable fabrics wick perspiration away from your skin and pass it on to the next layer. One wrong (i.e., non-breathable) piece, and the layering system breaks down—translating into heavy, damp clothing and an unpleasant experience. 3. USE YOUR HEAD: It is a commonly known fact that you lose more than 50 percent of your body heat through your head. Keep your head and other extremities well covered when the temperature dips below 40 degrees. 4. FACE UP TO IT: On cold, windy days, remember to cover your face. Consider buying a neck gaiter or balaclava. If you have neither of these, you can always dab some Vaseline on your face. 5. DON'T OVERDO IT: More runners overdress than under dress. A good rule of thumb: you should feel chilly during the first mile or so of your run. If you feel toasty soon after heading out the door, you'll likely get too hot and sweaty later on. 6. SAFETY: Incorporate reflective gear into your layering strategy or on top of it. You always want to be seen.

Manta Rays Begin Eighth Season with Tie-Dye Party & Intrasquad Swim Meet More than 260 Manta Ray swimmers kicked off the 2011-2012 swimming season with a tie-dye party and the Annual Manta Rays Intrasquad Swim Meet in October. “We have a record number of swimmers this year with over 350 swimmers including our 19 & older adult Masters team,” said Head Coach Ken Heis. “Our annual intrasquad meet is a great opportunity for both the swimmers and our parent volunteers to kick off the season.” A few days before the Intrasquad meet, the team hosted a Tie-dye Big/Little Party outside in front of the natatorium. The Big/Little program was started to keep swimmers from getting lost in all of the excitement of a large team. The program pairs younger swimmers on the team with the older swimmers to bring the growing team together as a thriving unit. The swimmers tie-dyed shirts, made posters, and learned team cheers together, creating a basis for the long-term success of the team. The Mason Manta Rays, a City of Mason USA Swimming team, will host the Southwest Regional Championships on the weekend of February 18-20, 2012. Swim meets bring thousands of swimmers, parents, and officials to the City of Mason’s Mason Community Center. In addition to entry fees helping to raise funds for the city, the High School Swim Boosters operate a concession stand. Many local businesses also reap the rewards of hosting these big meets because these swimmers have such huge appetites. With more than 350 total swimmers on the team ranging in age from 6 to 18, plus a growing adult Masters program, the Mason Manta Rays have become one of the biggest and strongest teams in Southwest Ohio. The program has grown from 110 swimmers to over 350 in seven years. The Manta Rays team has placed very high in the state and is nationally ranked at 60 out of over 2700 teams in the nation. Running a top USA swim program requires a big commitment from parents. In addition to paying the annual fees to the City of Mason, parents volunteer an average of around 30 hours per year, with some parents putting in a lot more.

Mason Manta Rays Big/Little swimmers Gabe Fraga (left) and John Galvin show off the team poster they created. “Our parents time, run the timing board, officiate, sell T-shirts, organize events, manage the web site, yell and scream for their kids, clean up the bathrooms, take pictures, direct traffic, and never say no,” said Geoff Thatcher, a parent with three swimmers on the Mason Manta Rays. The Mason Manta Rays swim team currently has three swimmers qualified to try out for the USA Olympic team at the 2012 Olympic Trials in Omaha: Dani Barbiea, Austin Caldwell, Amanda Smith Head Coach Ken Heis has been selected by Ohio Swimming to coach the Elite USA Swimming High Altitude Training Camp at the USA Olympic Training center in Colorado Springs on October 14-17. Several Manta Ray swimmers will be attendance. There is no cost to the City for Coach Heis to attend.
